‘BRICS remains a powerful force for global good': PM Narendra Modi
Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin skipped the summit, being hosted by Brazil in its capacity as the current chair of the influential grouping.
The BRICS has emerged as an influential grouping as it brings together 11 major emerging economies of the world, representing around 49.5 per cent of the global population, around 40 per cent of the global GDP and around 26 per cent of the global trade.
BRICS, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, with Indonesia joining in 2025.
Modi arrived in Rio de Janeiro last night on the fourth leg of his five-nation tour. He has already visited Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago and Argentina.
The situation in West Asia, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and challenges facing the Global South are likely to figure prominently at the BRICS Summit.
'Grateful to President Lula for hosting this year's BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. BRICS remains a powerful force for economic cooperation and global good,' Modi said in a social media post after he was welcomed at the venue of the summit by the Brazilian leader.
The motto of the Brazilian presidency of BRICS is 'Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance'.
The summit will culminate in two high-level declarations on financing the climate change regime and the governance of artificial intelligence.
Enhancing the use of national currencies in settling intra-BRICS trade may also figure in the discussions at the summit.
India will assume the presidency of BRICS next year.

Rio de Janeiro [Brazil], July 7 (ANI): Condemning the April 22 terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam in the 'strongest terms,' leaders of BRICS nations reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including the 'cross-border movement of terrorists, terrorism financing and safe havens.' In a joint declaration at the 17th BRICS summit, the leaders described terrorism as 'criminal and unjustifiable', regardless of the motive, and called for ensuring 'zero tolerance' for terrorism, rejecting 'double standards' in countering terror. The declaration stated, 'We express strong condemnation of any acts of terrorism as criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, whenever, wherever and by whomsoever committed. We condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April 2025, during which 26 people were killed and many more injured. We reaffirm ourcommitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including thecross-border movement of terrorists, terrorism financing and safe havens.' BRICS leaders reiterated that terrorism should not be linked with any religion, nationality, civilisation or ethnic group. 'We reiterate that terrorism should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization or ethnic group and that all those involved in terrorist activities and their support must be heldaccountable and brought to justice in accordance with relevant national and internationallaw. We urge to ensure zero tolerance for terrorism and reject double standards incountering terrorism,' it added. The leaders of BRICS nations welcomed the activities of the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Working Group (CTWG) and its five Subgroups, based on the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Strategy, the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Action Plan, and the CTWG position paper. The joint declaration stated, 'We emphasize the primary responsibility of States in combatingterrorism and that global efforts to prevent and counter terrorist threats must fully complywith their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the UnitedNations, in particular the purposes and principles thereof, and relevant internationalconventions and protocols, in particular international human rights law, internationalrefugee law and international humanitarian law, as applicable.' 'We welcome the activities of the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Working Group (CTWG) and its five Subgroups based upon the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Strategy, the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Action Plan and the CTWG position paper. We look forward to further deepening counter-terrorism cooperation. We call for an expeditious finalization and adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism in the UN framework. We call for concerted actions against all UN-designated terrorists and terrorist entities,' it added. In the joint declaration, leaders of BRICS nations also condemned the attacks against bridges and railway infrastructure deliberately targeting civilians in the Bryansk, Kursk and Voronezh regions of Russia on May 31, June 1 and 5, resulting in multiple civilian casualties, including children. The leaders of the BRICS nations reiterated their commitment to preventing and combating illicit financial flows, including money laundering and the financing of terrorism, extremism and proliferation, as well as other forms of transnational organized crime, such as drug trafficking,cybercrimes, crimes that impact the environment, illicit trafficking of firearms, traffickingin persons, corruption and the use of new technologies, including cryptocurrencies, forillegal, in particular terrorist purposes. The joint declaration stated, 'In this regard, we underscore the importance of enhancing capacity-building and technical assistance, particularly for developing countries, to support the implementation of relevant international obligations. We reaffirm our commitment to the principles of technical and non-politicized nature of international anti-criminal cooperation, including for the purpose of prevention and of financial investigations.' 'We note the need to further strengthen such cooperation, including through relevant existing BRICS working groups, meetings of the BRICS countries competent authorities and other forms of cooperation based on the documents adopted in BRICS, as well as the relevant international legal instruments to which BRICS countries are parties. We emphasize the importance of creating conditions for the safe development of the younger generation, reducing the risk of their involvement in illegal activities, and welcomed the development of relevant international projects with the participation of young people,' it added. Rio de Janeiro [Brazil], July 6 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the 17th BRICS Summit on Sunday, asserted that condemning terrorism must be a 'principle' rather than a matter of 'convenience', describing it as the 'most serious challenge' for humanity in the current global scenario. Addressing the BRICS Session on Peace and Security, the Prime Minister highlighted the recent terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 as a stark reminder of terrorism's threat to global peace and called for unwavering international solidarity. He stated that the attack was a blow to the 'soul, identity, and dignity' of India, acknowledging the international support that the nation received in solidarity. 'Terrorism has become the most serious challenge for humanity today. Recently India faced an inhuman and cowardly terrorist attack. On 22 April, the terrorist attack in Pahalgam was a direct attack on the soul, identity, and dignity of India. This attack was a blow not only to India but to the entire humanity. In this hour of grief, I express my heartfelt gratitude to the friendly countries who stood with us, who expressed support and condolences,' the PM stated. 'Condemning terrorism should be our 'principle', not just a 'convenience'. If we first see in which country the attack took place and against whom, then it would be a betrayal against humanity,' he added. He further emphasised the need for decisive action, calling for sanctions against such acts. He further noted that words and actions regarding terrorism should be the same. 'There should be no hesitation in imposing sanctions against terrorists. The victims and supporters of terrorism cannot be weighed on the same scale. For personal or political gain, giving silent consent to terrorism and supporting terror or terrorists should not be acceptable under any circumstances. There should be no difference between words and actions regarding terrorism. If we cannot do this, then the question naturally arises: are we serious about the fight against terrorism or not?' he noted. The Prime Minister's address also situated the fight against terrorism within a broader global context, noting the pervasive threats from West Asia to Europe and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. 'From West Asia to Europe, today the world is surrounded by disputes and tensions. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is a cause of great concern. India firmly believes that no matter how difficult the circumstances are, the path of peace is the only option for the welfare of humanity,' he said while reaffirming India's commitment to peace rooted in its cultural heritage and positioning the country as a proponent of peaceful resolution. 'India is the land of Lord Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi. There is no place for war and violence for us. India supports every effort that takes the world away from division and conflict and leads it towards dialogue, cooperation, and coordination and increases solidarity and trust,' he added. PM Modi also highlighted the role of BRICS in fostering global peace and security, stating, 'Global peace and security is not just an ideal; it is the foundation of our common interests and future. The development of humanity is possible only in a peaceful and secure environment. BRICS has a very important role in fulfilling this objective. We have to unite and make collective efforts to face our common challenges. We have to move forward together.' The Prime Minister concluded with an invitation to BRICS leaders to visit India for the next summit under India's chairmanship in 2026, further underscoring the alliance's potential to drive global stability. The summit, hosted by Brazil from July 7 to July 9, saw leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia coming together during the event. PM Modi hold talks with Malaysian counterpart Ibrahim on sidelines of BRICS Summit
Rio de Janeiro [Brazil], July 7 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro on Sunday (local time). PM Modi also met Cuba's President Miguel Diaz-Canel on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. The two leaders warmly greeted each other before they began their talks. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and other officials were present during the meeting. The BRICS summit, hosted by Brazil, brought together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, as well as new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia. Brazil assumed the BRICS Chairship on January 1, 2025, with the theme 'Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance'. India will host the 18th BRICS Summit in 2026. Meanwhile, addressing the 17th BRICS Summit on Sunday, PM Modi underscored the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in global institutions to address the marginalisation of the Global South as well as the challenges of the 21st century, noting that the Global South has often been a victim of 'double standards'. During his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the systemic inequalities and inefficiencies that the Global South faced, noting that the interests of the region have never been 'prioritised'. 'The Global South has often been a victim of double standards. Whether it is development, distribution of resources, or security-related issues, the interests of the Global South have not been prioritised. On issues like climate finance, sustainable development, and technology access, the Global South has often received nothing but token gestures,' he stated. Pointing to the historical neglect of two-thirds of humanity in 20th-century-formed institutions, PM Modi argued that countries with significant contributions to the global economy remain under-represented at decision-making tables, undermining the credibility and effectiveness of these bodies. 'Two-thirds of humanity has not been adequately represented in the global institutions formed in the 20th century. Countries that have a major contribution to today's global economy have not been given a place at the decision-making table. This is not just a question of representation but also of credibility and effectiveness. Without the Global South, these institutions seem like a mobile with a SIM card but no network. These institutions are unable to deal with the challenges of the 21st century. Whether it is the ongoing conflicts in different parts of the world, the pandemic, the economic crisis, or newly emerging challenges in cyber and space, these institutions have no solutions,' he stated. Earlier, PM Modi, along with other leaders, participated in the traditional BRICS family photo session held at the Museum of Modern Art in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro. The photo showed Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, along with leaders and representatives of other member countries, with Prime Minister Modi.
