Everything we know about a Squid Game US spin off
Here's everything you need to know about Squid Game's US spin-off.
Back in October 2024, Deadline reported that a brand-new spin-off was being developed on the streamer with David Fincher at the helm of the project. Things have been pretty quiet since then and fans have been wondering if it was still in the works.
Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke with Variety and said that Cate Blanchett's cameo is actually not a a direct link to the project.
"Actually no, not at all. It's not related to that. All I wanted to have was just an impactful ending, and that's all that was to it. Honestly, I haven't heard officially from Netflix about David Fincher creating a Squid Game," he said. "I have heard the rumors of course though. But again, it was just the ending that I wanted for Season 3."
Well, there's still another season of Squid Game: The Challenge to look forward to, so there's definitely more to come from the Squid Game universe. But in terms of direct spin-offs, Hwang Dong-hyuk says that he's open to what comes next.
"I'm not trying to say that I'm going to close the door to spinoffs or sequels altogether because they say never say never," he told Entertainment Weekly.
He also noted that he already has an idea for a spin-off, but it's definitely not what fans might have in mind.
"I actually had this faint ideation about possibly a spinoff — not a sequel, but maybe a spinoff about the three-year gap between season 1 and season 2 when Gi-hun looks around for the recruiters," Hwang said. "There is that three-year period, and maybe I could have a portrayal of what the recruiters or Captain Park or officers or masked men were doing in that period, not inside the gaming arena, but their life outside of that. So that is some vague ideation that I have that could possibly be developed in the future."
Will it actually come true? We'll have to wait and see! Until then, we have to hope the rumors of a US spin-off are true so we can see just what kind of recruiter Cate Blanchett really is like.
Squid Game season 1-3 is available to stream on Netflix.

Liam Payne shines amid criticism of Netflix's Building The Band reality show
Critics have savaged new Netflix series Building The Band, describing it as 'spectacularly misjudged,' 'painfully unfunny,' and 'a chaotic mess,' but many agreed on one thing: Liam Payne is 'the best thing' about it. The reality series, which landed on the streaming platform today (July 9), was filmed before Payne's shock death last October aged 31, when he fell from the third floor of a hotel balcony in Argentina. It features the former One Direction star in a key mentoring role. His contribution - kept in with the support of his family - has been widely praised for its warmth and authenticity, offering one of the few standout moments in a show many reviewers have otherwise called derivative. Hosted by Backstreet Boys' AJ McLean, with Nicole Scherzinger as lead judge and joined by Kelly Rowland and Payne, the 10-part competition sees aspiring singers attempt to build bands from scratch without input from music executives or producers. Most damning was The i Paper, which questioned the show's very existence in the wake of Payne's death. It raised concerns about how such talent formats affect young performers' mental health and whether enough protections are in place. 'Obviously, the flashy trailer displays no awareness of the grim irony that were it not for programmes just like this that promise desperate, hopeful singers a future of success and stardom, Payne might still be alive,' it writes. The Telegraph was also not won over, declaring the show 'an insincere singing contest' and criticising its format as a mashup of The X Factor, The Circle and Love Is Blind. Still, it highlighted Payne's appearance in episode seven as the emotional high point. 'He judges the acts with kindness and constructive criticism,' the review by the publication read, adding that an Australian contestant's heartfelt story about seeing One Direction as a child visibly moves him. 'It's right that the producers, backed by the family, decided to keep his contribution in. But it's also pretty sad.' The Guardian, meanwhile, offered a more reserved three-star verdict. While calling the series 'fine, watchable, well-crafted,' the paper criticised early episodes for feeling 'drawn out and repetitive.' It also questioned the concept's relevance in today's music scene. 'I did wonder why Building the Band would focus on groups in an era dominated by solo artists, but perhaps it's less about music and more about creating spectacle,' the reviewer wrote. The Standard's own Saskia Kemsley was the kindest, awarding the show four stars. Kemsley praised Building the Band for tapping into the legacy of early 2000s TV juggernauts like The X Factor, the show that helped launch Payne's career. 'For lifelong One Direction fans, Payne's presence is bittersweet – but he's a grounded, respectful presence here, and the series handles his legacy with care,' the review reads. She continued: 'Like clockwork, tensions flare. Those who falter often lash out, giving the show its requisite dose of drama. But Building the Band isn't just about meltdowns. It's also a showcase for powerful mentorship, and few moments are more affecting than Payne's.'

Nicole Scherzinger Teases Netflix's Building the Band: ‘Musical Version of Love Is Blind'
Fresh off her Tony win, Nicole Scherzinger is currently serving as a judge on Netflix's new competition reality show, Building the Band. Although the name might sound similar to an MTV show hosted by a certain disgraced hip-hop mogul, this show is totally different. According to Nicole, it's like a musical version of Love Is Blind. Building the Band is Netflix's latest competition series, featuring members of legendary bands. AJ McLean is the host. Serving as mentors and judges are Nicole, Kelly Rowland, and Liam Payne, in his final appearance before his death. The show brings together solo singers who are divided into six new groups. It feels inspired by the success of groups like One Direction, Little Mix, and Fifth Harmony, who were pieced together after solo auditioning for The X Factor. However, as Nicole pointed out to Access Hollywood, Netflix has added some elements that make it feel like their other hit reality show. 'It's nothing like we've ever seen before, but it's like the musical version of Love Is Blind,' Nicole explained. 'It's a musical band version of Love Is Blind, and it's really cool because these contestants are putting themselves together in a band, having never seen one another, and just getting to connect with each other in these booths listening to each other and asking each other questions.' Ultimately, the contestants sort themselves out into six different bands. They can pick between three, four, or five-person bands. In the first batch of episodes, we see that not everyone makes the cut. Netflix just dropped the first four episodes of the series. The rest will be released all throughout July, with a total of ten episodes. Stay tuned to see if this show produces another One Direction. Building the Band is streaming on Netflix, with new episodes dropping every Wednesday. TELL US – WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON BUILDING THE BAND?
