UFC Officialy Moves From ESPN to Paramount: Why It Is a Huge Win for a Fans Wallet

Yahoo2 days ago
All UFC television broadcasts will be moving from ESPN to Paramount starting next year. And the news is a big win for the wallets of diehard fight fans.
Over the last few months, the UFC has been in discussions with various networks and streaming services about purchasing their media rights. The promotion's current deal with ESPN ends this year. Rumors over the last year have pointed to it being very unlikely the two sides would continue their relationship.
Well, those rumors became a reality today when the UFC announced its new television home. However, it is not the brand most expected. Instead of heading to Amazon Prime or Netflix, the company is taking its violence circus to the Paramount+ streaming service in a deal reportedly worth $7.7 billion.

'Paramount, a Skydance Corporation, and TKO Group Holdings, Inc., a premium sports and entertainment company, today announced a seven-year media rights agreement in which Paramount will become the exclusive home of all UFC events in the U.S,' the companies announced in a statement.
'Starting in 2026, Paramount will exclusively distribute UFC's full slate of 13 marquee numbered events and 30 Fight Nights via its direct-to-consumer streaming platform, Paramount+, with select numbered events to be simulcast on CBS, Paramount's leading broadcast network.'
Why UFC events heading to Paramount+ is a big win for fight fans
Watching UFC events on ESPN+ has become expensive for fight fans. To watch the majority of UFC Fight Night cards, a subscription is required, and that costs $11.99 a month or $119.99 per year if you did not sign up for a combo deal with other Disney-owned services like Hulu and Disney+ years ago. But if you wanted to watch a pay-per-view event, that cost an extra $79.99. A huge cost to see the biggest fights in the sport each month.
However, in the press release, it was revealed that this will no longer be the case on Paramount+. Similar to what WWE did on Peacock, events that were once pay-per-view switched to being called premium events and were free, along with a subscription. The current cost of a Paramount+ subscription is $7.99 a month or $59.99 per year with ads, or $12.99 a month or $119.99 a year for ad-free content.
That means in 2026, you will be able to watch events like this weekend's UFC 319 card for no added cost. The deal ushers in a more fan-friendly era that should bring back fans bothered by the high costs of events and greatly expand Paramount+'s reach with fight fans.
'This is a milestone moment and landmark deal for UFC, solidifying its position as a preeminent global sports asset,' Ariel Emanuel, Executive Chair and CEO of TKO, said in the statement. 'Our decade-long journey with UFC has been defined by continuous growth and expansion, and this agreement is an important realization of our strategy.
'We believe wholeheartedly in David's vision and look forward to being in business with a company that will prioritize technology as a means to enhance storytelling and the overall viewing experience.'

Kansas receives record-setting $300 million gift from donor David Booth

Later this month, when it kicks off its 2025 football season, Kansas will unveil a newly renovated David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium that just underwent a nine-figure facelift. Even before that happens, the stadium's namesake has some even more generosity in store for his alma mater. Kansas has received a $300 million gift from donor David Booth, the school announced on Wednesday, Aug. 13. It is the largest gift in school history and is among the largest in the history of college athletics. REQUIRED READING: What are the best college football games of Week1? We list the top 10 Of that $300 million, $75 million will go toward launching the second phase of a $448 million overhaul of the Jayhawks' football stadium and the abutting Gateway District, a multi-use development planned next to the stadium that includes a new hotel, retail and restaurant spaces, student housing, parking and an outdoor event plaza. The remainder of that total will, according to the university, 'generate a stream of income that will strengthen Kansas Athletics across generations.' "David's unprecedented generosity is transformative now and for our future," Kansas athletic director Travis Goff said in a statement. "It accelerates phase II of the Gateway District and the new 'Booth' and inspires others to step up and join in completing this vision. We're profoundly grateful for David's leadership and extraordinary impact on generations of student-athletes and fans. There is no more generous and impactful Jayhawk, and we are so fortunate to call him a friend and mentor." Booth is a Lawrence, Kansas native and Kansas graduate who is the founder of Dimensional Fund Advisors, a global investment firm that manages $853 billion in assets. The Jayhawks' football stadium was renamed after Booth in 2017, when he pledged $50 million over five years to renovate the venue. Over the better part of the past two years, the 104-year-old stadium has been effectively rebuilt, with new seats, suites, lights, turf and scoreboard. The construction forced Kansas to play last season away from campus, with home games occurring at the stadiums of Kansas City's NFL and MLS teams. The east side of the old venue remains in place and will be rebuilt as part of the second phase of the project. "One of life's greatest privileges is being able to give back to the people and places that gave so much to you," Booth said in a statement. "KU and Lawrence are a big part of my story, and it means a lot to support the community that invested in me. Philanthropy, like investing, pays dividends over time. Each gift compounds, creating opportunities not just for today, but for years to come. This is really about the future we're building." Kansas opens its 2025 football season on Saturday, Aug. 23, when it hosts Fresno State. The Jayhawks are coming off a disappointing 5-7 season in 2024, but are expected to be better this year, receiving six votes in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll.

Beyoncé vies for artist of the year at MTV VMAs. Will she make history again?

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is in the running for artist of the year at this year's MTV's Video Music Awards, and it's a big deal. The VMAs will broadcast live from New York's UBS Arena on Sept. 7. Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, Morgan Wallen, The Weeknd and Lady Gaga, who leads the pack with 12 total nominations, are also nominated in the prestigious category. This year is especially significant for Beyoncé, who will face off with Swift for the most ever VMA wins. Both women have a total of 30 wins and are nominated for artist of the year at the 2025 show. Last year, Swift took home seven VMAs, tying Beyoncé as the top winner. Of course, Beyoncé is already the most decorated artist in Grammys history with a total of 35 wins. Ahead of the 2025 award show, she became the leading nominee with a total of 11 nominations. Some of those included nominations in the country and American roots categories for the first time. In total, seven different songs from the album were nominated across four genres. She wound up winning album of the year for the first time for her eighth studio album, "Cowboy Carter." She also made history as the first Black woman to win best country album for 27-track project. "I'd like to thank all the incredible country artists that accepted this album," Beyoncé said when accepting the award. "I think sometimes genre is a cold word to keep us in our place as artists, and I just want to encourage people to do what they are passionate about and to stay persistent." She also won the award for best country duo/group performance for "II Most Wanted" with Miley Cyrus at the award show. Of course, Beyoncé singer closed out her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas on July 26. The concert signaled the end of her "Cowboy Carter" era — a 32-stop stadium tour that spanned the U.S. and Europe. The tour became the highest grossing country tour with over $400 million in earnings. The VMAs will air on CBS and Paramount+. ‘South Park' doubles down after Noem calls portrayal ‘lazy'

The creators of 'South Park' released an alternative ending to a recent episode making fun of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem after the secretary called the show's depiction of her 'lazy.' The show published a clip on the social platform X showing an animated Noem walking into a pet store and firing several shots with a gun inside the building while dogs yelped inside. 'Didn't see this on TV?' the show asked. 'Here's the Paramount+ version of the end credits scene.' Noem took heat in 2024 for describing how she put down a dog after a family hunting trip, part of a forthcoming book at the time. The 'South Park' post came in lieu of a new episode on Wednesday. The show has taken direct aim at President Trump and his allies with its first several episodes of the season, mocking Noem in its most recent episode, making fun of her appearance and the immigration operations conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). 'It's so lazy to just constantly make fun of women for how they look. Only the liberals and the extremists do that,' Noem said, responding to last week's epsiode. 'If they wanted to criticize my job, go ahead and do that, but clearly they can't, they just pick something petty like that.'
