‘Palworld' Deleting Pal Gliding Due To Nintendo Patent Lawsuit

Pokemon/Palworld
Palworld is still under siege by patent lawsuits brought by Nintendo against a number of game mechanics that have resulted in fundamental changes to the monster-catching game. Now, something else is getting removed from Palworld thanks to the increasingly oppressive slate of patents.
Nintendo has now forced Palworld to delete the concept of gliding with a Pal in the game, as in, you hang from a flying pal to use as a glider instead of an actual glider. Palworld shared the news on social media late last night:
The one bit of good news here is that this does not mean the erasure of flying Pals you can ride, only Pals you can use as gliders which shows how weirdly specific and irritating these patents can be. It seems obvious you shouldn't be able to patent say, riding on a flying creature, but with these patents, at this point, who really knows.

This joins another fundamental change where Palworld has had to replace the concept of throwing spheres to summon Pals to instantly just summon them next to the player, another Nintendo patent, along with other mechanics.
Palworld
It is very hard to defend Nintendo in these patent proceedings, even though patenting gameplay mechanics or systems is not a new concept. Most famously, there was a patent preventing minigames to be used in loading screens. Most recently, Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis system of defeating and upgrading a hierarchy of enemies was patented, meaning that innovative system cannot be used in other games. A recent Wonder Woman from the publisher was just cancelled, which reportedly used the system which is now locked in prison due to the patent
The public perception of what Nintendo is doing here is poor, but Nintendo has yet to face anything close to widespread consequences for many of its controversial decisions and practices, from its war on Palworld to its new introduction of $80 games for the Switch 2, which sold out in minutes via pre-orders.
Pokemon Legends
Pocketpair is stuck between a Digitoise and a hard place here, having no choice but to remove these seemingly innocuous mechanics, lest they spend ages and millions fighting the massive Nintendo in court over each patent. While Palworld presses on, all this has slowed development and the company is apologetic to fans:
This does not seem like it's over, and Nintendo's war on Palworld will continue to press on with no doubt surprising and often ridiculous claims about its mechanics.

Nintendo Switch 2 smashes record as company's fastest-selling console

Japan's Nintendo said on Wednesday it had sold more than 3.5 million Switch 2 units in the first four days after its launch, making the console the company's fastest-selling gaming device to date. Last month, the Kyoto-based company forecast Switch 2 sales would reach 15 million during the current financial year ending next March. 'Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go,' Nintendo of America President and Chief Operating Officer Doug Bowser said in a statement. It is sold with titles including 'Mario Kart World.'

Nintendo Switch 2 Sets Sales Record in Boon for Games Sector

(Bloomberg) -- Nintendo Co. sold 3.5 million-plus units of the Switch 2 in just four days, a record-breaking start for the company's first new console in eight years. Trump's Military Parade Has Washington Bracing for Tanks and Weaponry NY Long Island Rail Service Resumes After Grand Central Fire NYC Mayoral Candidates All Agree on Building More Housing. But Where? Senator Calls for Closing Troubled ICE Detention Facility in New Mexico California Pitches Emergency Loans for LA, Local Transit Systems The Japanese company has already sold more of the device than the roughly 2.7 million the original Switch managed during its first month in 2017. The numbers, released by the company Wednesday, bode well for its target to sell 15 million units by March next year. They also reinforce analysts' projections that Nintendo may be able to sell far more if it can pump up supply. Gamers from Tokyo to San Francisco lined up for hours last week to get their hands on one of the most highly anticipated gadgets of the year. The long-awaited Switch 2 succeeds a global hit in the original, which pioneered a hybrid design that allows play both at home on a TV and on the move. The release of the new Switch was regarded as a watershed moment for the industry, steering business decisions by partners and competitors for years to come. At a time of thinning margins and exploding development budgets, a popular new console may galvanize the sector and provide a counterbalance to the increasing dominance of a handful of marquee, live-service games. Catching up with runaway demand is the first major challenge Nintendo faces. President Shuntaro Furukawa has apologized after customers came away from lotteries for the Switch 2 empty-handed. The Kyoto-based company has asked its partners to speed up production of the console. It's also secured agreements from Japanese online marketplace operators such as Rakuten Group Inc., Mercari Inc. and LY Corp. to discourage resellers from taking advantage of the hardware's scarcity. The console is manufactured mainly in China by partners including Foxconn Technology Group. Nintendo's shares, which have gyrated because of concerns about how tariffs may disrupt supply, fell more than 3% in Tokyo. 'The pace is good,' said Hideki Yasuda, an analyst with Toyo Securities. 'The key will be to maintain assembly capacity and increase production going forward.' A chronic shortage may spur consumers to turn elsewhere and flatten momentum. Nintendo's priority is to sustain launch momentum for as long as possible, Furukawa told analysts at an earnings briefing in May. That's more difficult due to the Switch 2's higher retail price compared with its predecessor and growing weakness in the global economy. Furukawa has also warned the company may consider raising the console's price in the future, depending on US President Donald Trump's tariff measures. What Bloomberg Intelligence Says: Nintendo has sold more Switch 2 consoles in the first four days than the Switch in its first month, suggesting its fiscal 2026 hardware revenue and overall sales might beat consensus if the firm can increase Switch 2 supply. Supply may be impacted by US tariffs on China, where two-thirds of Switch 2s are made. More than 3.5 million Switch 2 units sold in the four days since its June 5 debut. Sales of its predecessor, launched March 3, 2017, totaled 2.74 million that month. -Nathan Naidu, analyst Click here for the research. --With assistance from Mark Anderson, Natsuko Katsuki and Yuki Furukawa. Switch 2 Breaks Records By Selling Over 3.5 Million Units In Four Days

The Switch 2 has had a pretty momentous launch. Nintendo The Switch 2 has managed to break records by selling over 3.5 million units globally in its first four days on sale. Despite the expectations that the increased price point of the console and its games would harm sales, it seems the opposite is now true. According to Nintendo, the Switch 2 has been their fastest-selling console in the history of the company, as it amassed over 3.5 million sales in its first four days. That exceeds what the original Switch managed, and that went on to be a huge success, almost selling as much as the PlayStation 2 in its lifetime. Considering how Zelda: Breath of the Wild made the original Switch fly off shop shelves back in 2017, it now seems that Mario Kart World has indeed done what many suspected. In that, while Breath of the Wild was a huge seller for the first Switch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe managed to sell more than double that. With that in mind, it makes sense that you would make an open-world Mario Kart game to kick-start your next console. I've had a lot of fun with Mario Kart World, and you can read my review if you are at all curious about the game, but it's clear now that this combination at launch for the Switch 2 has been very successful. As for how the Switch 2 has done in Japan, it's a bit different compared to the first Switch launch. Mainly because many bought the console online from Nintendo's site directly, which meant that there has been steady stock in most shops here as a result. The other interesting thing is that the Japanese Switch 2 is sort of region locked to Japan, as it only supports Japanese language games. This is to hamper efforts from scalpers who bought the old multi-region Switch and sold it in places like China for a huge markup. You can buy a multi-region Switch 2 in Japan, but only from Nintendo's official site, which is what I did, and that seems to have stopped the scalpers in their tracks, at least for now. The flip side to all this is that the Japanese version of the Switch 2 has subsequently been more available, and that has no doubt helped its sales here. The launch line-up of games for the Switch 2 has also been varied and strong, so it will be interesting to see how it performs over the next few months, once other big releases land on the system.
