Seahawks WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba embraces increased role ahead of his 3rd season
Still, the 23-year-old Smith-Njigba couldn't hide his longing for both Metcalf and Lockett following the Seahawks' third day of training camp on Friday.
'I miss those guys,' Smith-Njigba said. 'Those are two great guys that I call friends. It sucks that they're not here with me, but I know they're going to ball out where they're at.'
Smith-Njigba said he has kept in touch with both Metcalf and Lockett, who's now with the Tennessee Titans. But entering his third NFL campaign, Smith-Njigba recognizes he will take on a more prominent role after catching a career-high 100 passes for 1,130 yards last season.
Two years removed from his time at Ohio State, Smith-Njigba is the Seahawks' top wideout and one of the league's more accomplished receivers.
'I'm excited about that role,' Smith-Njigba said. 'Every year that I play football, high school, college, that year three is a role I get excited for because I know the offense, I know the DNA in the building, and I can put that on the field and guys can follow it. I can be a leader by example; I love that role and I'm super excited for this year.'
Smith-Njigba benefited last season from not being the sole receiver opponents had to worry about. Defenses should be on higher alert for him this year, but it's not as if he's suddenly become the elder statesman of the group.
Namely, there's 32-year-old Cooper Kupp, who signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Seahawks in March after eight seasons with the Los Angeles Rams.
'He brings a next-level mindset,' Smith-Njigba said. 'I'm super excited to be with him in that receiver room. Another stellar receiver, great receiver, and I'm just blessed to be in the room with him.'
Outside of those two, there aren't many proven wideouts, or ones who are still in their primes. Marquez Valdes-Scantling, 30, appears likely to be the third option. Jake Bobo, who is known more for his blocking than receiving abilities, is entering his third season and drew praise from coach Mike Macdonald following Friday's practice.
A cluster of young wideouts is in camp as well, including rookies Tory Horton and Ricky White III. Smith-Njigba sees it as his responsibility to help those players, much as Metcalf and Lockett did for him.
'Talking to those guys that came before me, taking that next step is very important,' Smith-Njigba said. 'Those guys showed me the way, so I always feel like I need to give back. I love to do that, love to be in that position. Hopefully I can take the standard and push it forward.'
Smith-Njigba also hopes to keep developing his relationship with new quarterback Sam Darnold. In the early stages of camp, Smith-Njigba described that relationship as continuing to grow. It began over the offseason as the two trained together in Southern California.
Smith-Njigba hopes he and Darnold can achieve all the personal and team goals he has for the 2025 season.
'Right now, I feel great in the position and role I'm in,' Smith-Njigba said. 'I know if I help my team win, if I go out there and perform at my best and help my team win, all the accolades will come. That's my mindset. Deep playoff run, go win us a ring in January and February, playing winter football, is my goal.'

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields participated in 7-on-7 drills at training camp Saturday, two days after being carted from the field with a dislocated toe. Fields threw passes during quarterback positional drills and then again in a session with wide receivers, including tossing a perfectly placed deep ball to Tyler Johnson for a big gain that drew cheers from the fans in the stands. Fields didn't participate in team drills and will continue to be evaluated on a daily basis. The Jets have their first off day from practice Sunday. 'I thought he did a good job in 7-on-7s,' coach Aaron Glenn said. 'And the thing is, he has a ways to go until we get him out there and we're going to make sure we keep the process going, keep the protocol going to make sure he's ready.' Fields sent fans and social media into a frenzy Thursday when he dislocated a toe on his right foot early in practice. He was carted from the field to the facility, where he had multiple tests before the team announced the diagnosis — relieving fears that it could be an even more significant injury. Fields watched practice Friday from the sideline while wearing his helmet but had progressed enough Saturday to take part in some of the practice. Glenn didn't think Fields, expected to be the starter in his first season with the Jets, would fall behind because of the injury. 'He's going to be just fine,' the coach said. 'He missed one day. 2025 MLB betting: Nick Kurtz now a massive favorite to win AL Rookie of the Year
Coming off of a historic game on Friday night in which he became the first Major League Baseball rookie to hit four home runs, the general public has been introduced to Athletics rookie first baseman Nick Kurtz. This is coming off a week where the 22-year-old Kurtz was named the AL Player of the Week. The betting market has taken notice as well. Kurtz opened up far down the odds board to win American League Rookie of the Year at BetMGM with 80-1 odds. New York Yankees outfielder Jasson Dominguez opened as the favorite at +600. It wasn't all smooth sailing for Kurtz, as Yahoo's Jordan Shusterman detailed in this article, as he went through and 0-for-21 skid in May before breaking out and becoming the best hitter in baseball in July. On June 14, Kurtz was down to 14-1 odds (tied for the second-best odds), but still a massive underdog to his Athletics teammate Jacob Wilson, who was -1000 to win the AL ROY. That equates to roughly a 90.9% chance to win the award. Even five days ago on July 21, Wilson was the +100 favorite at BetMGM and Kurtz was second at +160. Wilson had second-most wagers (11%, behind the Royals' Jac Caglionone) and by far the most money of any player at 33%. Wilson also represented the sportsbook's biggest liability on the award. But after Friday night's offensive explosion, Kurtz became the odds-on favorite for the first time all season and now has -2000 odds to win, an implied probability of 95% to win the award. It's an astonishing baseball — and betting — story, and one we'll be sure to follow throughout the rest of the season.

Damian Lillard talks time in Milwaukee, return home to Portland
Damian Lillard was always going to retire and enter the Hall of Fame as a Portland Trail Blazer, but his return to the city ended up happening much sooner than expected. After Lillard tore his Achilles in an April playoff game, and with rumors of Giannis Antetokounmpo's frustration growing, Milwaukee shocked the league by agreeing to waive and stretch Lillard, buying him out and making him a free agent. That cleared his path to a return to Portland. In recent interviews, Lillard spoke about all of it. When discussing his tenure with the Bucks, injuries were the main topic — Antetokounmpo missing Lillard's first playoffs with the team, then this year with his Achilles — with Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I think you gotta be a little bit lucky to win big. You gotta be healthy and you gotta be playing your best at the right time and I think we just had bad luck." He also talked about loving the experience of playing alongside Antetokounmpo, despite some criticism of his production and play. "But I think Giannis and I, we was the highest-scoring duo during that time. We won a [NBA] Cup. I think a lot of people for me personally was like, we want to see Dame do this and Dame do that, but I'm playing with a 30-plus point per game scorer, a guy who plays with the ball in his hands the same way I've done my whole career. He's aggressive and attacking and I still managed to score 25 points per game and seven assists over my two years pretty much. So I think it's kind of unfair how people was like Dame (isn't the same) because of the way I played in Portland. I had the ball all the time, so it just looked different. But I think for how productive I actually was I think it's been viewed unfairly." Now, Lillard is just happy to be home, as he told Anne M. Peterson of the Associated Press. "Just knowing that I'm going to be back home for all parts of my life, with my kids, playing for the Trail Blazers, driving on the same streets that I've driven on pretty much my entire adulthood, my whole family being here, my mom, my brother, my sisters, all my friends around the city of Portland," he said. "All of those things count. I wasn't expecting it to happen so soon." It did. He is going to spend this season more as an assistant coach working with young guards like Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe and Toumani Camara. He will join them in the rotation in a year. For now, he's just happy to be home.
