Neglect of cemeteries upsets Endumeni residents
Families visiting graves over the weekend say they are forced to wade through thick grass and blackjacks just to find burial sites. Stray cattle are a regular sight, and litter is often left behind after funerals.
'It's heartbreaking,' said one elderly resident. 'I couldn't even find my mother's tombstone. There were cattle walking around and rubbish everywhere. This is no way to treat our ancestors.'
Vegetation now hides grave numbers, making it difficult for families to identify loved ones. Many described the state of the cemeteries as 'disgraceful' and 'undignified.'
'There is no dignity left in these cemeteries,' said another resident. 'It's as if those buried here are forgotten.'
Frustration is also mounting over the stalled completion of new cemeteries in Dundee and Glencoe. Despite tenders being awarded and funds allocated, the sites remain unfinished, leaving residents questioning accountability and public expenditure.
'This is taxpayers' money,' said a community member. 'We deserve answers. But more importantly, we deserve clean, properly maintained cemeteries that respect those who came before us.'

Swing for youth golf day
Youth In Action, a registered non-profit organisation in Port Shepstone is dedicated to empowering young people under the age of 23, particularly those from disadvantaged communities. The organisation is hosting a fundraising golf day and awareness event at the Port Shepstone Country Club on Saturday, August 2, from 09:00. The golf day is not just about sport, it's an opportunity to create real change and to demonstrate corporate social responsibility in action. Golf day co-ordinator, Paul Geoffery said the organisation's mission is to uplift and develop the next generation of leaders on the South Coast. 'Every Friday evening, Youth In Action teams welcome around 100 children to a safe space where they are mentored, inspired and encouraged. Through various empowerment sessions we provide them with a sense of purpose and belonging. The challenges the youth face include poverty, broken families and social ills that leave them vulnerable,' said Geoffery. The organisation has been running successfully for several years and is both meaningful and measurable. They provide refreshments each Friday, ensuring that the physical needs of the youth are met alongside emotional and social support. The organisation is inviting businesses and golfers to support the event. For further information on the golf day, contact Paul Geoffery on 065 3637457. Young volunteers put furry friends first at Edupaw
A DEDICATED duo of Edupaw volunteers, Skhona Mbanjwa and Sbusiso Mokoena, have spent the past six years working with the NPO following their graduation from its canine care programme. Also read: Raising awareness one snare at a time They each joined as students in 2019 and soon after returned to volunteer. Founder of Edupaw, Cathy Keegan, said Skhona and Sbusiso are currently a vital part of the organisation's team of eight. 'They feed our dogs, de-worm and bathe them, fit their collars and leads, and help set up and pack up for each class. They are remarkable young people, spending their weekdays at school, yet give up their Saturdays to volunteer,' said Keegan. She said that many of the NPO's volunteers walk long distances from local townships to be a part of Edu Paw, and in return they receive food for their own dogs. Keegan said that while Edupaw volunteers deserve more for the good work they do, the NPO's limited funding only stretches so far. Annual adopt-a-doll auction live at East Rand Children's Haven
The East Rand Children's Haven's annual adopt-a-doll fundraising auction launched on July 18 in honour of Mandela Day. The campaign raises essential funds to support the home's daily operations and care for the 20 children who live there. Funding from the Department of Social Development falls far short of covering the home's needs. While smaller fundraisers are held throughout the year, the annual doll auction is one of the most significant contributors to keeping the home running. This year's campaign features 20 dolls, each representing a child in the home's care. One doll is auctioned off every few days on the home's Facebook page (East Rand Children's Haven) between Mandela Day and Women's Day on August 9. Each winning bidder receives a certificate of 'adoption' as a token of appreciation. Supporters are encouraged to display the certificate proudly in their home or workplace. In a special call to action, the home is encouraging businesses, schools and families to pool their resources and place a group bid on one of the dolls. Proceeds go directly toward the care of the children and household needs.
