Orlando Pirates players step up as Bafana Bafana prepares for friendlies

WITH Mamelodi Sundowns players not being included in the current Bafana Bafana setup ahead of two friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique, it is not a secret that a lot of the weight to lead the side will be carried by Orlando Pirates' stars. Bafana play Tanzania at Peter mokaba Stadium on Friday night, 7.30pm kick-off before taking on Mozambique at Loftus on Tuesday. The positive news coming from Polokwane, where the national team set-up camp, is that they - Pirates players themselves, seem to understand the duty upon their shoulders quite well. Bafana coach Hugo Broos himself made it all clear on Monday when he named Pirates defender and one of the Betway Premiership side's leaders, Nkosinathi Sibisi, as his stand-in skipper in the absence of Sundowns goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams. Leading the defence for Bafana alongside Sibisi is expected to be the likes of Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Deano van Rooyen, who both played crucial roles getting Pirates to the semi-finals of the Caf Champions League. 'It's an honour to be selected for the Bafana Bafana squad. For me, I have been working hard to get this opportunity. You have to keep working hard, you'll never know when the opportunity will come. Now for us the focus is to get a chance in the two games and give my best,' said Van Rooyen. 'We had a good season at Orlando Pirates and a lot of our players gained a lot of experience of playing in the Caf Champions League. For us now it is a chance to help the country achieve good results in the next two games.' Van Rooyen and Sibisi are indeed among the experienced members of the squad. 'Yes we have a younger squad but as the coach has said, there is no pressure on us. So we must just go out there and perform and be ourselves,' said van Rooyen. Commenting on Sibisi's leadership, Van Rooyen said of the man who has captained him many times in the colours of the Buccaneers: 'He is someone who does not speak a lot but his work on the field speaks for itself. I think he is that kind of a leader. His experience on the field, I think will be good for us.' What should make the Pirates players' leadership duty easy, is the fact that other squad members themselves seem to be in unison. One such squad member is AmaZulu forward Tshepang Moremi, who believes everyone will have to seize the moment regardless of age or even seniority. 'Whether you are young or you are old, the important thing for us to understand is that it is our time,' said Moremi. 'This is my first callup and it was my first time meeting with the coach (Broos) yesterday (on Sunday). He told me that I have been working hard and so I deserve to be in this team and I must keep on working hard. 'He told me that whenever I play I must do my best because you never know who is watching. Moremi 'I am looking forward to keeping on improving and working hard. My main goal is to play in the Afcon and Fifa World Cup. 'It is very important to me to keep working hard and contribute to the team, either by scoring and assisting. Even in the upcoming two games, when I get a chance, I will try to either score or assist.'

Fifa's first 32-team Club World Cup set to kick off in US amid challenges

Fifa's billion-dollar gamble to revolutionise club football begins a week on Sunday with plenty of cash up for grabs but questionable enthusiasm as 32 teams prepare to contest the expanded Club World Cup in 12 stadiums across the US. The tournament — designed as a glittering showcase ahead of the 2026 World Cup — has had to contend with the prospect of empty seats along with controversial qualification rules and player welfare concerns after an exhausting European season. Lionel Messi's Inter Miami face Egypt's Al Ahly in the opening fixture on June 15 at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, with tickets still widely available days before kickoff. Mamelodi Sundowns, the 2024-25 Caf Champions League runners-up and one of four African teams in the competition, kick off their Group F campaign against Korea's Ulsan HD at Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando on June 17. A glance at Fifa's website shows many tickets available, including for the July 13 final at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. Inter Miami gained entry by topping Major League Soccer's (MLS) regular season standings, despite losing in the first round of the playoffs — a decision critics say shows FIFA's desperation to have the Argentina great at their inaugural showpiece. Fifa's decision to give the host nation a spot and award it to Inter Miami underlined the opaque nature of the qualifying criteria for the tournament, which won't feature Liverpool, Barcelona or Napoli who have all just been crowned champions of three of the most prestigious leagues in Europe. Apart from the winners of each confederation's premier club competitions, teams qualified according to a ranking based on their performances over a four-year period. There is also the case of Mexico's Club Leon, the 2023 Concacaf Champions Cup winners, who were excluded from the tournament just over a month ago due to having shared ownership with another qualifier. The spot has gone to MLS's Los Angeles FC. The stage is set as the final team for the FIFA Club World Cup is in @LAFC! 🔒 — OneFootball (@OneFootball) June 1, 2025 Nailing down a last-gasp $1bn (R17.9bn) TV rights deal with sports streaming platform DAZN six months before the tournament means a total of $2bn in expected revenues. That led Fifa to announce a total prize pot of $1bn, with the winning club to receive up to $125m (R2.2bn). That figure represents 25% more than Paris St Germain earned from their entire 17-match Champions League campaign. But this largesse has not quelled concerns about player welfare, with the global players union FIFPro taking legal action against Fifa over a tournament that further compresses the precious recovery time between gruelling seasons. Furthermore there is still concern over the playing surfaces after last season's Copa America, when many headlines focused on the sub-par conditions and smaller pitch dimensions. Those pitches, measuring 100m by 64m, were 740m² smaller than Fifa's standard size, prompting widespread discontent among players and coaches. 📍Where the #FIFACWC action will unfold. 🏟️ — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) June 2, 2025 Fifa has given assurances that this time the NFL American football stadiums hosting the matches will meet their specifications, confirming that all venues will feature natural grass and adhere to the standard regulation dimensions of 105m by 68m. Divided into eight groups of four teams, top contenders include Real Madrid, winners of six of the last 12 Champions League titles, plus German champions Bayern Munich and 2023 Premier League and Champions League winners Manchester City. European champions Paris St Germain are the in-form team heading into the tournament after their historic 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan in the Champions League final on Saturday. But they must survive a tough Group B featuring South American and Brazilian champions Botafogo and 2024 Concacaf winners Seattle Sounders plus Spanish giants Atletico Madrid. Whether you call it soccer or football, for Fifa the tournament represents a dress rehearsal and a referendum on America's appetite for the sport and on the world governing body's vision for its commercial future ahead of the 2026 World Cup being co-hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada.

Kaizer Chiefs bosses to sign two Sundowns superstars?

Kaizer Chiefs supporters have been engaged in passionate conversations following Mamelodi Sundowns' decisions on Sipho Mbule and Rivaldo Coetzee. The two players, both still in the peak years of their careers, were once targets of Kaizer Chiefs before moving to the Betway Premier champions. The duo's super agent, Mike Makaab, has confirmed that Mbule and Coetzee are free agents after Sundowns decided against extending their expiring deals. Should Amakhosi use this opportunity to sign proven Premier Soccer League quality players? Speaking to the media on Monday, Makaab revealed the news: 'Sipho Mbule Mbule and Rivaldo Coetzee are free,' Makaab told FARPost . 'They are leaving Mamelodi Sundowns after the club didn't take options on their contracts.' Rivaldo Coetzee (left) and Sipho Mbule (right) representing Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership. Images: @masandawana/X Will Kaizer Chiefs, known as the Glamour Boys, consider Mbule and Coetzee? What is clear is that the club needs depth in midfield, especially a creative number eight. Kaizer Chiefs news: Amakhosi bosses and Morris Coetzee, aged 28, formerly with Ajax Cape Town as a captain at the age of 17, is the most experienced with 223 matches in the Premier Soccer League and CAF Champions League. Mbule, much admired by Kaizer Chiefs fans, has 169 matches under his belt and is still 27 years old. Mbule and Coetzee also have a combined eight PSL championship-winning medals. Coetzee has lifted the title six times while Mbule has won two titles.
