Abbott says FBI is ‘tracking down' Texas Democrats
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said on Thursday that the FBI is 'tracking down' Democratic state lawmakers who fled the Lone Star State as the GOP looks to return them to the state Capitol. 'Texas DPS and the FBI are tracking down the derelict Democrats. They will be taken directly to the Texas Capitol,' Abbott wrote on the social platform X. 'Those who received benefits for skipping a vote face removal from office and potential bribery charges,' he continued. 'In Texas, there are consequences for your actions.' Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) earlier on Thursday said the FBI had approved his request for them to help law enforcement agencies track down the Democrats, who fled the state over the weekend to block Republicans from passing a House map even friendlier to the GOP. The FBI declined to comment to The Hill about what Cornyn's statement means or if it plans to speak publicly about it. It's also not clear what the FBI has agreed to in terms of aiding Republicans. Experts who spoke with The Hill on Wednesday expressed skepticism that the FBI even had the jurisdiction to aid Texas Republicans in forcing Democrats to return to the state. 'I don't see why the FBI would be involved in this at all. I mean this is Texas politics and the FBI has no business trying to enforce Texas state law,' Richard Painter, who served as associate counsel to the president in the White House counsel's office during former President George W. Bush's second term, told The Hill. 'The only federal law that I think is being violated in Texas and in Illinois and several other states is voting rights. I think gerrymandering violates voting rights, but the U.S. Supreme Court's not willing to do anything about it,' he added, referring to a 2019 decision that said the issue of gerrymandering is not within the scope of the federal courts. The GOP's calls to have the FBI involved have drawn strong rebukes from Democrats. 'The FBI has no business — or legal authority — to track down Texas House Democrats. The list of people willing to abuse their power to help Trump steal five congressional seats is growing. It's a threat to the rule of law and our democracy,' said Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas), who was a Texas state lawmaker and among the Democrats who broke quorum in 2003, during another instance of GOP mid-decade redistricting. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Former AG says FBI can't return Texas lawmakers who fled state
Former Attorney General Eric Holder said Sunday that the FBI does not have jurisdiction to return Texas Democratic lawmakers who fled their state. 'Texas lawmakers are digging in. You heard Governor Abbott there talking about the FBI, Senator Cornyn calling the FBI to help locate those Democratic lawmakers who fled the state. I wonder, do you think that the FBI has jurisdiction to intervene here and try to bring back those Democrats who are in other states?' NBC News's Kristen Welker asked on 'Meet the Press.' 'Short answer, no. I mean, you're asking the FBI to get involved, to find these legislators who are in the process of trying to defend democracy in Texas,' Holder responded. 'And they're not hard to find, but the question after that is, 'Well, what's the federal jurisdiction? What federal statute has potentially been violated? What's the basis for any federal government interaction?' And I would say that there is none,' he added. Texas Democratic state House members last weekend left the Lone Star State amid a redistricting battle between themselves and Texas Republicans. The move resulted in outcry from members of the state's GOP, who have been trying to move ahead with a controversial redistricting plan that could cost Democrats seats in Congress. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said Thursday that FBI Director Kash Patel approved a request to assist state and local law enforcement find the absconded Texas Democrats. 'I am proud to announce that Director Kash Patel has approved my request for the FBI to assist state and local law enforcement in locating runaway Texas House Democrats,' Cornyn said in a statement Thursday morning. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) also said Thursday that the FBI was 'tracking down' the Democratic lawmakers. 'Texas DPS and the FBI are tracking down the derelict Democrats. They will be taken directly to the Texas Capitol,' Abbott wrote on the social platform X.

Elgin police rank 6th for DUI arrests, per AAIM, falling from last year
The Elgin Police Department ranked in the top 10 law enforcement agencies making the most drunk driving arrests in 2024, though the ranking dropped from last year's second-place berth. The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) released the results of its Illinois DUI Arrest Survey for 2024 that showed Elgin ranked number six. Elgin had 245 DUI arrests, the survey showed. 'Each arrest reflects the hard work and dedication of the officers who put themselves on the line every day. Their efforts help protect lives and prevent families from experiencing the pain of a crash,' said Rita Kreslin, AAIM executive director, in a press release. Last year, Elgin Police Department made 282 arrests to achieve the second-place spot. The change could be a result of different factors, like people using rideshare services to avoid drinking and driving or people staying at home more, said Elgin Sgt. Hector Gutierrez, the department's public information officer. EPD does 'no refusal' campaigns during holidays, including Memorial Day weekend. They allow police to work with prosecutors to obtain a seach warrant against drivers who refuse to take a breathalyzer, blood or urine test during a drunk driving stop or investigation, according to the Kane County State's attorney's office. A campaign is coming up for Labor Day weekend, Gutierrez said. 'We are going to be looking for intoxicated drivers on the roadway to keep everyone safe,' he said. 'Hopefully those (campaigns) resonate with people, and they are taking safety precautions,' Gutierrez said. AAIM's survey showed Det. Paul Dublinski had 22 DUI arrests in Elgin last year. Dublinski is a veteran officer who routinely has the highest number of DUI arrests in the department. 'We have officers who really care about getting DUI drivers off the roadway and making the streets safer for the community,' Gutierrez said. AAIM is an Illinois-only citizen activist group founded in 1982 by victims of drunk driving. Its survey, which started 35 years ago, had an 81% response rate from nearly 700 police agencies around the state in 2024. The survey showed the top 10 police departments were: Aurora remained the first in the state for the second year in a row. Naperville had one of the largest increases in arrests from 2023 to 2024, 51.8%, along with West Chicago, which had a 31.2% increase. The sheriff's department reporting the most DUI arrests was Winnebago County with 387. The top five list included McHenry County with 189 arrests, Cook County with 155, Lake County with 136, and Will County with 133. 'Enforcing DUI laws is demanding but essential work. The entire AAIM organization sincerely appreciates the officers' daily sacrifice, dedication to public safety, and efforts to save lives. We deeply value their constant commitment,' Kreslin said, in the release.
