Delhi High Court to hear plea over sexual crimes against animals in July
A bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela on May 28 posted the matter on July 16 to enable the petitioner to bring more facts on record.
The Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) in its PIL highlighted the "complete repeal" of Section 377 (unnatural sexual offences) of IPC under the newly-enacted Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
While Section 377 of the IPC was rightly read down by the Supreme Court in the 2018 Navtej Singh Johar judgment to decriminalise consensual same-sex relationships, its complete deletion from BNS inadvertently decriminalised sexual violence against animals, leaving them unprotected by law, it argued.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, the plea said, in its report on BNS highlighted the removal of Section 377, proposing reinstating it to address non-consensual sexual offences against men, transpersons and animals.
The plea, filed through advocate Varnika Singh, sought the restoration of the provision that specifically criminalised sexual crimes against animals under the erstwhile Section 377 of IPC.
In April alone, the PIL referred to a couple of crimes being reported in the national capital.
While a man was arrested in Shahdara area for allegedly raping several dogs, a pet dog, which succumbed later, was found unconscious on a road in Saket and a condom was retrieved from its intimate parts.
The PIL also referred to an incident in Coimbatore, where a construction worker was found sexually abusing a dog.
FIAPO's CEO Bharati Ramachandran, in a statement, said, "Animals cannot defend themselves. They deserve justice and protection from sexual violence under law.'

Supreme Court cancels Darshan's bail In December 2024, the Karnataka High Court had granted bail to actor Darshan in connection with the Renukaswamy murder case. Now, nearly eight months later, the Supreme Court has overturned the judgment. This essentially means that Darshan must 'surrender or face arrest'. Earlier today, a bench comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan cancelled the bail and stated that the High Court's order was 'legally and procedurally flawed'. The ruling attacked the earlier decision for failing to record any 'special or cogent reasons' as required under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC. About the Renukaswamy murder case According to police records, Darshan and his aides had allegedly abducted Renukaswamy– a fan from Chitradurga– in June 2024. The police further claim that he was beaten up and tortured on multiple days. Renukaswamy later died from the injuries and his body is said to have been dumped in a drain. The sessions court had earlier refused to grant bail to the accused. This prompted them to approach the High Court, which granted bail in December 2024. The decision has now been nullified/overruled by the Supreme Court

Justice Narula clarified that the court was not ruling on the veracity of the allegations but was solely focused on protecting the couple's fundamental rights to life, liberty, and dignity.

Death of woman in Kothamangalam: SIT likely to arraign parents of the accused
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of a 23-year-old woman at Kothamangalam is likely to arraign the parents of the accused, Rameez, as well. The investigation team, led by the Muvattupuzha Deputy Superintendent of Police ( continues to keep its action under the wrap though it is reliably learnt that the parents may be charged based on the revelations in the suicide note, reportedly written by the victim. The note alleged that Rameez through his family forced her for religious conversion as a precondition for marrying her. The victim was found hanging in her house at Kothamangalam on Saturday (August 09, 2025). Initially, the Kothamangalam police registered a case of unnatural death. However, the police stumbled upon the suicide note during the preparation of Mahassar on Sunday, based on which Rameez was arrested the next day. Though there were reports that the accused's parents would be summoned for questioning, the police haven't made any move yet. Kin's allegation The SIT was constituted after the police came under pressure as the kin of the victim and right wing political parties alleged that the woman was a victim of attempted forceful religious conversion. The Kothamangalam police, which initially investigated the case, had ruled that out, as they found it to be a case of a failed affair. Dissatisfied with the police investigation, the family of the victim petitioned the Chief Minister on Tuesday (August 12,2025) and the State Police Chief demanding that a probe be conducted by the National Investigation Agency. They accused the police of charging only lenient clauses against the accused and demanded that he and his parents be charged for attempted forceful religious conversion. Statements being collected The SIT has been collecting statements from friends, relatives and others who qualify as witnesses and sifting through the Call Detail Records of the victim and the accused. The investigation team is likely to get the custody of the accused by Monday (August 18, 2025). The accused was booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 69 (sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means etc), 108 (abetment to suicide), and 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) on charges that he slapped her.
