Bengaluru stampede: BJP demands Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar's resignation, CM points to tragedies under its watch

Indian Express4 hours ago

The Karnataka BJP Tuesday held a protest at Freedom Park in the city, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar and Home Minister G Parameshwara over the Bengaluru stampede. During the demonstration, the BJP leaders reiterated their demand for a three-day special Assembly session to discuss the tragedy.
Siddaramaiah, however, hit back at the Opposition by pointing to the tragedies that had taken place during the BJP's rule and said that the party had no moral authority to demand the resignation of leaders in Karnataka. Eleven people were killed in the stampede that took place on June 4 outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium, a day after Royal Challengers Bengaluru won their maiden Indian Premier League title.
After the protest, Leader of Opposition R Ashok said the Karnataka High Court taking up a case suo motu regarding the stampede showed that the court did not trust the government. Commenting on multiple probes launched into the stampede, he said that there was no clarity on any of the investigations announced by the state.
Ashok alleged that people lost their lives as 'CM Siddaramaiah and his family (were) taking photos with cricketers', contending that the government itself invited people to Vidhana Soudha. 'Had they not issued such an invitation, this tragedy would not have occurred,' he said, demanding a three-day special session of the legislature.
Responding to the same, Siddaramaiah issued a statement saying, 'BJP leaders in the state, first, to release a list of BJP leaders who resigned during similar incidents in the past before demanding our resignation.'
Calling the stampede at Chinnaswamy an 'unfortunate accident', he said that the state government had accountability for the incident. 'We have suspended senior police officers, including the Bengaluru city police commissioner, and transferred the chief of the state intelligence department. My political secretary has also been relieved of his duties,' he said.
The protests by BJP leaders, despite measures taken by the government, make it evident that their motives are political and not driven by genuine concern for the people, he said. 'Politicising tragedies is not new to the BJP. It is ingrained in their DNA to pounce like vultures over every incident of death, accident, or violence,' the CM said.
Siddaramaiah said that he felt 'compelled to expose their hypocrisy by bringing certain incidents during the BJP rule to the attention of the people. 'In 2002, during the Gujarat riots, approximately 2,000 innocent people from various communities lost their lives. Despite prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's suggestion to take responsibility and resign, then chief minister Narendra Modi neither stepped down nor expressed any remorse to date. Those demanding our resignation should first address this,' he said.
Siddaramaiah sought accountability over the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the violence in Manipur over the last two years, the Morbi Bridge collapse in Gujarat that claimed 140 lives and the stampede at the Mahakumbh in Uttar Pradesh earlier this year.
'In the stampede case, preliminary action has been taken against those who appeared negligent. A comprehensive and impartial investigation is being conducted under the leadership of a retired judge. Based on the commission's report, strict action will be taken against the culprits without hesitation,' he said.

Maharashtra doubles pension for Emergency-era detainees, extends benefits to spouses

The BJP-led Maharashtra government on Tuesday approved a cabinet decision to increase monthly pensions for individuals jailed during the Emergency period (1975–77). Under the revised scheme, those who were imprisoned for less than a month will now receive Rs 10,000 per month, up from Rs 5,000. Those jailed for more than a month will get Rs 20,000 monthly, compared to the earlier Rs 10,000. The government also amended the scheme to allow the surviving spouse of a deceased beneficiary to receive 50% of the pension. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the move aims to 'honour and glorify' those who fought for democracy during the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi between June 25, 1975 and March 31, 1977. As per the cabinet note, surviving spouses will have to apply afresh to their respective district collectors. If the beneficiary passed away before January 2, 2018, the spouse can still apply with an affidavit. A 90-day window will be provided from the date of the official announcement for such applications. The earlier age requirement of being at least 18 at the time of arrest has been scrapped, making more people eligible for the scheme. The respective district collectors will verify the names and addresses of eligible beneficiaries and ensure the pension amount is credited directly to their bank accounts. There are 3,782 recognized Emergency detainees in Maharashtra. The government has sanctioned Rs 28 crore to cover their pensions for the period from April 2025 to January 2026. A total of Rs 55 crore had been approved for the scheme, with this amount forming the first release. The scheme, originally launched in January 2018 by the then Fadnavis-led government, had been scrapped in 2020 by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government, citing financial constraints due to the Covid-19 pandemic. With Fadnavis back in power, the scheme has now been reinstated.

Congress and its allies are promoting their own families, creating division among castes, says BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) accused the Congress and its allies of promoting their own families and creating divisions between castes in an attempt to generate electoral gains. 'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet has approved a nationwide census, which will, for the first time in independent India, include both a socio-economic survey and caste enumeration,' BJP MP and spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said at a press conference. He said the Modi government's objective was to ensure recognition, respect, and the upliftment of all castes, especially those at the farthest margins. Also Read | Population Census will be conducted in 2027, government notifies Mr. Trivedi accused the Congress of double standards on the caste census. 'The BJP-led NDA (National Democratic Alliance) government in Bihar set an example by conducting a caste-based survey in 2022. Ironically, it was the Congress that stopped caste-based enumeration in 1951. It also sidelined the Kaka Kalelkar Committee report and failed to implement the Mandal Commission recommendations. Now, the same party raises questions on these issues while ignoring facts clearly stated in official documents,' he said. The BJP leader alleged that the Congress and its allies 'want to dedicate all loyalty only to their own families, and incite conflict among all sections for that purpose'. 'After having been in power for so long, the Congress should at least understand technical matters. The notification for a caste census is issued by the Centre. States cannot conduct a caste census, so which State's notification are they referring to? States can only conduct surveys. The process of conducting a survey is different and has no statutory procedure,' Mr. Trivedi said. He said the West Bengal government had included a large number of people from the Muslim community in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, for which the Backward Classes Commission had duly sought an answer from the State government. 'Of the total 179 backward class castes included in the State list of West Bengal, 118 castes are Muslim. Before 2011, the total number of backward castes was 108, of which 53 were Muslim. After 2011, 71 backward castes were included, of which 65 are Muslims,' the BJP leader said, alleging that this was due to 'vote bank politics'.

Guwahati-Dibrugarh & Jorhat-Delhi morning flights from Sept 20: CM

Dibrugarh: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced that a morning flight will operate, starting from Sept 20, between Guwahati and Dibrugarh. Additionally, regular morning flights will begin along the Delhi–Jorhat and Guwahati–Silchar routes, the CM said, adding that efforts will be made to introduce evening flights as well. Responding to recent allegations by Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi regarding the govt's handling of the situation in Dhubri and it being orchestrated by RSS-BJP forces, Sarma strongly refuted the claims, accusing Gogoi of politicising sensitive issues. "How can a Hindu person slaughter a cow, sever the head and throw it in front of a temple? And what about the rest of the carcass? The act seems deliberately staged," the CM said, dismissing the MP's accusation. Speaking about the long-standing demand for preservation of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala's ancestral home at Tamulbari, Sarma said while such initiatives become formal govt projects when taken up officially, local communities and organisations should ideally take the lead in preserving cultural heritage. "I will see what can be done from the govt's side as well," Sarma said. Regarding the functioning of Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL), Sarma said the public sector unit was currently surviving on govt support, while running at a loss. On ensuring proper ethnic representation in autonomous councils, the CM reiterated that Matak people will vote in the Matak council and Moran people in Moran council, preserving their integrity and representation.
