FASTag glitches on Bengaluru-Mysuru highway cause delays, spark outrage

The Hindua day ago

Malfunctioning FASTag scanners at toll plazas on the Bengaluru-Mysuru access-controlled highway are causing significant traffic delays and frustration among daily commuters.
Regular users of the route, including bus drivers and private vehicle owners, alleged that the scanners often fail to read FASTag devices, forcing manual intervention that results in long pile-ups, particularly during peak hours and weekends.
A Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) driver who travels between Bengaluru and Mysuru daily, said the issue has persisted for the past 20 days. 'The FASTag scanners don't read the tag on our bus. We have to wait for almost five minutes for the toll staff to intervene and scan it manually. This happens frequently, and it affects not just buses but all kinds of vehicles,' he said.
He added, 'Due to these delays, I often get stuck at the toll plaza for nearly 30 minutes and miss my schedule. Passengers get agitated, and we are unable to stick to the timetable.'
Commuters also report that these issues lead to heavy congestion at Kaniminike Sheshagiri Halli toll plazas and other key toll booths along the stretch.
Mahesh Kumar, a commuter from Mandya, recalled a recent experience at the Kaniminike toll plaza. 'My FASTag wasn't being read. After five minutes, a staff member there told me the problem was with my FASTag and made me pay in cash, including a fine. But I had recharged the tag and had enough balance,' he said.
'When I returned from Mandya to Bengaluru later the same day, the same issue occurred. This time, I insisted it wasn't my fault. They scanned it manually and it worked. Clearly, the error was from the toll plaza's side,' he added.
Weekend travellers are particularly affected, with many saying that delays have become part of the routine. Yakshith B.R., a resident of Kengeri, said, 'Even when I leave home as early as 6 a.m. on Saturdays, I still get stuck in traffic at the toll plaza. The FASTag system often fails, and vehicles start queuing up quickly. It's frustrating.'
Many commuters are now urging the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to take swift action. They are demanding improved sensor technology, regular maintenance, and better on-ground coordination. Some even suggest that NHAI should consider temporarily opening toll gates when scanner errors occur, to ease congestion.
'If the FASTag system is failing regularly, especially during peak-traffic hours, the least NHAI can do is wave vehicles through when there is a technical fault. Commuters should not be penalised for system errors,' said Venkatesh P., a regular commuter in this stretch and a resident of Vijayanagar.
When contacted, officials from the NHAI said they had not received formal complaints but assured that the matter would be investigated. 'We have not come across any specific complaints about FASTag scanner failures on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway recently. However, we will look into it and take appropriate action,' an NHAI official said, declining to comment on the technical reasons for the recurring problem.

New Toll Policy: India to Introduce Per Km Tolling System for Highways, ET Infra

Advt Advt By , ETInfra NEW DELHI: Under a new toll policy which is currently being formulated, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is mulling over a framework wherein users of India's highways and expressways can pay charges based on per km basis rather than existing norm of paying a predetermined toll toll fee is paid on a fixed amount based on the length of stretch under one road project which is normally 60 km, as per the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.'Under the new toll policy , the government is exploring ways to enable users to pay toll based on per km of usage of highways and expressways. In the existing system, users pay a fixed toll irrespective of whether they use the highway stretch for a few km or for the entire length,' a senior government official, aware of the development, told ET Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had reportedly stated that under the new system, the requirement of physical toll plaza for collection may not be country in the last few years has seen the deployment of FASTag, a device that employs Radio Frequency Identification or RFID technology for making cashless toll payments without having to stop at toll booths. The government is now in the process of rolling out an enhanced toll system which will be based on Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, in order to facilitate the implementation of the new toll policy.'The idea is to ensure that there is no pilferage and revenue loss to the government,' said the official, adding that the new system may incorporate satellite tracking technology as well. The Minister for Road Transport and Highways had reportedly stated that under the new system the requirement of physical toll plaza for collection may not be to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the ANPR-FASTag-based Barrier-Less Tolling System will be implemented at selected toll plazas. The system will enable vehicles to be charged based on their identification through high performance ANPR cameras and FASTag Readers, without needing to stop at the toll plazas. In case of non-compliance, e-notices will be served to the violators, non-payment of which may result in suspension of FASTag and other related penalties.'This can be considered as a proactive initiative adopted by the government to adopt a barrier-less tolling will result in seamless toll collection, reduce travel time, eliminate stoppage time at toll plazas, especially during peak traffic hours,' said Jagannarayan Padmanabhan , Senior Director & Global Head, Crisil private companies or entities engaged in the construction and maintenance of highways and expressways are allowed to collect tolls and recover their investment under a concession official highlighted that under the new toll policy, it is being mulled that revenue be shared with the concessionaire through a centralised pool.'As the toll collection will become automatic without any intervention at the toll plazas, it is being contemplated that the revenue will be shared with the various concessionaires through a centralised pool by the central government, so that there is no revenue loss to them even if the user is being charged on a per km basis and not a fixed standard rate,' the official official highlighted that under the existing system there are instances wherein the private operator does under-reporting of revenue generated via toll and the new system is aimed at stopping such highlighted that if the new policy transfers the risk of default payments to the concessionaires, then they must bear the risk.'There will be no significant adverse impact on the existing concession agreements on toll collections as the technology will promote barrier free tolling systems, which will result in smooth traffic flow and enhanced revenues. However, if the policy transfers the risk of default payments to the concessionaires, they must bear the risk of delayed payments until the default is cured,' said to a statement from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the National Highways Authority of India has invited bids for the implementation of 'ANPR-FASTag-based Barrier-Less Tolling System' for installation at select toll plazas and based on the performance, efficiency, and user response to this system, a decision will be made regarding its implementation across the country.

Dry spell helps NHAI partially refurbish Surathkal-B C Road Port Connectivity Road

The week-long dry spell has helped the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to partially complete the total renewal of the Port Connectivity Road on the Surathkal-B C Road section comprising portions of National Highway 66 and NH 75. While the total renewal of the 11 k.m. stretch of the 37.42 k.m. Port Connectivity Road, built by the New Mangalore Port Road Company Ltd., was launched on April 24 by Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta. Rains lashing the region from May third week hampered the renewal work. M/s Mugrodi Constructions had bagged the contract for total renewal at an estimated cost of ₹28.58 crore. The NHAI, working on behalf of the NMPRL, had commenced milling (scraping) the identified highway surface from NITK-Surathkal and relayed bitumen concrete on certain stretch; but it had to stop the work mid-way following torrential rains. Consequently, road users, particularly two-wheeler riders, had a tough time negotiating the stretch even as potholes and craters continued to haunt them along the stretch. The Authority resumed the renewal work after the rains subsided from last one week and completed laying bitumen concrete on the milled stretch of about 1.5 km from Tadambail towards the City, according to an official. It may not further mill the balance stretch as the rains were expected to resume in the coming week and complete the work soon after the Monsoon. Clearing drains The improper maintenance of the Port Road over the years had resulted in the shoulder drains remaining clogged thereby preventing free flow of rainwater and damaging the carriageway surface. Along with the renewal of the carriageways, the NHAI has now started clearing the drains, particularly on the New Mangalore Port stretch between Baikampady and Kulur. As the Authority would not be able to relay the roads immediately, it would fix potholes and craters on the Surathkal-KPT stretch on NH 66 to ensure road users would not get affected during the Monsoon, the official said. Waterlogging cleared Meanwhile, the Authority has built a cross-drain using cement pipes near Thumbay on Mangaluru-Bengaluru NH 75, part of the Port Road, that witnessed massive waterlogging during rains. The waterlogging besides inconveniencing road users, had resulted in road mishaps too. The just-completed cross drain was able to prevent waterlogging on the stretch with the accumulated rainwater draining out on the southern side of the highway, the official said.

Government approves shifting of Gurgaon's Kherki Daula toll plaza on Delhi-Jaipur NH to Pachgaon

NEW DELHI: The government has approved shifting of Gurgaon's Kherki Daula toll plaza on the Delhi-Jaipur National Highway (NH-48) to Pachgaon, a place beyond Manesar, paving the way for easy commute for lakhs of office goers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now When the plaza is moved to Pachgaon, over 15 kilometres from Gurgaon, commuters travelling between Delhi and Manesar also won't have to pay toll. Locals have been demanding its removal since 2014. TOI has learnt that Union road transport and highways minister has approved the plan, and to ensure the new spot doesn't see any congestion, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will go for Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll collection system. For the new facility, the Haryana government has provided nearly 28 acres of land to the highway authority, sources said. The process of shifting and starting the MMLF system to collect toll at Pachgaon may take around six months. 'Pachgaon is the ideal location as it falls beyond Gurgaon and Manesar. Since there is an interchange of the Western Peripheral Expressway and the NH-48 at Pachgaon, the new toll collection point couldn't have been beyond the intersection,' a source said. In the MMLF system, vehicles don't need to stop as overhead cameras installed for each lane will read the vehicle registration number and automatically deduct the charge from the FASTag wallet linked to the vehicle. Sources said a decision has also been taken to have an integrated system to ensure that traffic coming from the Dwarka Expressway side and heading towards Jaipur don't end up paying toll at this point once again as user fee. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'This is very much possible. Once the annual toll pass for private vehicles is rolled out most of the issues will be resolved automatically,' said a source. The shifting of the toll plaza will end conflicts between operators and people from areas adjoining Kherki Daula, and fulfil the promise the Haryana and central governments have been making for the past seven to eight years. Locals have been demanding that the NHAI shift the toll plaza citing that the govt has recovered more than the investment made in constructing the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway by private players and the highway authority. In a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha in March, the road transport ministry said against Rs 2,489 crore incurred as cost for the NH-48's Delhi-Gurgaon stretch, the toll collection has been around Rs 2,775 crore, around 11% more than the investment. After completion of this 27-km Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, commuters were paying user fees at Sirhaul (Delhi-Gurgaon border) and Kherki Daula toll plazas. Tolling was stopped at the Delhi-Gurgaon border in 2014, bringing relief to commuters travelling between Dhaula Kuan in Delhi and Kherki Daula. However, those going beyond this point paid toll for the entire stretch. At present, NHAI collects toll through its agency. Meanwhile, sources said the decision to shift the Kherki Daula toll plaza by the road transport ministry will create more pressure on the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to do away with physical entry fee collection booths on the capital's borders to prevent congestion. Traffic jams at these places defeat the purpose of huge investment in building highways and expressways for faster connectivity to Delhi.
