Akhilesh's new home in Azamgarh to serve as SP's Purvanchal HQ

Lucknow: On the face of it,
Samajwadi Party
's new office in
Azamgarh
that was inaugurated by
Akhilesh Yadav
amid much fanfare on Thursday, is described as one in the series of offices that the party is setting up across the state and beyond.
But going by the plans that the party leadership has, the premises are sure to assume the dimensions of SP's Purvanchal headquarters by the time the 2027 assembly elections approaches.
To begin with, the idea to have a party office-cum-residence for SP chief in Azamgarh, has been in the offing for quite some time now.
The party chief had mooted the idea well before the 2022 state polls. No wonder, the first chunk of 38 biswa and 16 kadi land (approx 2.46 acre) was purchased from 11 farmers on Jan 22, 2021.
The land was purchased in the name of the party for around Rs 6.5 crore. While Rs 45.90 lakh were paid for the stamp papers, another Rs 6.5 lakh were paid as additional registration charges.
The need for a full-fledged party office in the region was felt soon after Akhilesh took over the reins of the party in 2017. This was because the SP chief was then handling Central UP affairs from Lucknow itself, while his Saifai residence served as the party's nucleus for West UP areas.

The Purvanchal belt which consists of 28 districts comprising 164 assembly seats had to be handled from Lucknow and the leadership was keen to keep its ears to the ground in the region.
The fact that Purvanchal played the 'make or break' link belt for the SP in terms of putting the numbers on board to form the government in 2017 (14 seats) and 2022 (53) only expedited the process of setting up a party office in the region.
The campus of the new SP office is located barely 3 km from the Azamgarh district headquarters and 7 km from the Manduri airstrip, thus making it easy for senior leaders to visit it at regular intervals.
If sources are to be believed, the SP chief will monitor party's 2027 election campaign in 168 assembly seats of Purvanchal area from the Azamgarh party office itself.
The structure of the party office when completed, promises to offer more than mere ornamental value. Apart from SP chief's office and cabins for his staff including personal assistant and likes, the office a visitor's room, waiting gallery, meeting hall and ante rooms for second rung leaders.
When complete, the facility will have a 2000-capacity auditorium as well where party workers will meet the top leaders. The infrastructure promises to be at par with the party headquarters in Lucknow if not better than that.
"SP office at Azamgarh also makes a political statement as well because it falls between two important power centres of the main political rival – the BJP. While Gorakhpur – the home district of chief minister Yogi Aditynath is situated in the North of Azamgarh, prime minister's parliamentary constituency of Varanasi falls in the South," said a senior SP leader.
The SP strategists are confident that the renewed focus on Azamgarh will help the party push its PDA pitch across the Purvanchal demography which includes Yadavs, Dalits and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) like Kurmis, Rajbhars and Kushwahas, coupled with Muslims. Brahmins and Thakurs are also present in large numbers in Purvanchal and not all of them have got their share of the pie in the BJP government and will vote for the SP in 2027 polls," said a senior party functionary.
It is no surprise then that Akhilesh had named the new party office in Azamgarh as 'PDA Bhawan'. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls the PDA – comprising Pichhade (Backward classes), Dalit and Alpsankhyak (Minorities) – has sided with the SP in UP significantly contributing to put up as tally of 37 seats – party's best ever score in Parliament polls.
Choosing Azamgarh had an emotional element to it as well. In 2015, SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav had said: "Agar Mainpuri mera dil hai to Azamgarh meri dharkan hai (If Mainpuri is my heart, Azamgarh is my heartbeat)."
Mulayam's emotions for Azamgarh were not unfounded. The district has been SP's stronghold in elections. In 2012 assembly polls SP bagged all 10 assembly seats in the district. In 2017 the party won 9 and in 2022 it again won all 10 again. The Azamgarh Lok Sabha constituency has so far sent 5 SP MPs to the Parliament including Mulayam Singh (2014), Akhilesh Yadav (2019) and sitting MP Dharmendra Yadav.

Protests erupt over smart meters, tariff hikes
Vijayawada: A massive protest spearheaded by the CPM against the implementation of smart electricity meters and soaring power tariffs rocked Vijayawada on Friday. Hundreds of consumers and activists converged at APCPDCL head office, submitting over 50,000 applications to demand the removal of installed smart meters, a reduction in electricity adjustment charges, and the cancellation of agreements with corporate entities like Adani and SECI. The protestors creatively displayed the 50,000 applications around the CPDCL office, with many wearing placards around their necks declaring 'No Smart Meters'. Women, particularly incensed, wore their petitions to express their anger. Loud slogans denouncing smart meters, Adani's alleged exploitation, and the burden imposed by the rulers filled the air. CPM leaders asserted that the current coalition government has betrayed the public on electricity, imposing a staggering Rs 15,485 crore in adjustment charges despite promises of no hikes. They highlighted how small industries and businesses are struggling to pay bills, leading to closures and job losses. Speakers criticised the government for ordering the installation of Adani smart meters, calling it 'deplorable' given that coalition leaders previously advocated for their destruction. The protest also condemned the replacement of two crore working meters with prepaid Adani smart meters, imposing Rs 25,000 crore burden on citizens, to be collected over 93 months. 'These aren't just smart meters; they're like Adani bombs, exploding in every home every month,' warned a CPM leader, referring to the technology that allows Adani offices in Gujarat and Delhi to control meters remotely. Recalling the year 2000 electricity protests where three activists were killed in Hyderabad, leaders warned that interfering with 'power (electricity)' had cost Chandrababu 'power (authority)' then. They urged the government to reduce charges, halt smart meter installations, cancel corporate agreements, and honour their promises, or face a widespread, unified movement across the State.

87% enumeration forms distributed in Bihar; 5% filled up & returned; documents can be added later
Special intensive roll revision (SIR) completed in Bihar NEW DELHI: Booth level officers (BLOs) on Friday completed door-to-door visits to the state's nearly 1.5 crore households as part of the ongoing special intensive roll revision (SIR), distributing enumeration forms to over 87 per cent or over 6.8 crore, of Bihar's 7.9 crore electorate. Already, 38 lakh or 5 per cent filled-up and signed enumeration forms, with or without the specified documents, have been received by the BLOs, with the figure expected to touch 15 per cent on Saturday. Sources in the election commission (EC) told TOI that even where enumeration forms are short on one or more required documents, there shall be a window for the elector concerned to submit them anytime before July 25, the last date for submission of the completed enumeration forms. 'All those who turn in their filled-up forms by July 25 will be included in the draft electoral roll to be published on August 1, 2025,' said an EC official adding that the BLOs are working with the motto 'inclusion first'. 'In order to get one's name in the draft electoral roll, the strict condition is to sign and submit the pre-printed enumeration form before July 25. This step will filter out non-existent voters, either dead or migrated ones who are no longer ordinary residents of that assembly constituency,' said an EC officer. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like O novo Chevrolet Tracker é simplesmente perfeito com esses preços! Smartfinancetips Saiba Mais Undo Though BLOs will give their recommendation while submitting/uploading the filled up enumeration form, the electoral registration officer (ERO) or assistant ERO (AERO) is expected to scrutinise the forms 'not recommended' by BLOs only after draft rolls are published on August 1. Claims and objections to the draft electoral roll can be filed from August 1 to September 1. 'Based on the documents attached or not attached, eligibility verification of each name in the draft roll will start vigorously from August 2 onwards, which is also the date from which political parties or any member of the public can file claims and objections,' said an officer. EROs and AEROs will scrutinise the forms against the eligibility criteria laid down in Article 326, which requires electors to Indian citizens, not less than 18 years of age and ordinarily resident in the constituency. Asked about the remaining 13 per cent enumeration forms still not distributed by BLOs, EC said these could be on account of locked houses, dead electors, migrants or those who may be travelling. BLO will be making two more house visits in such cases. Electors who miss the July 25 deadline can still apply for inclusion during the claims and objections period using Form 6. The over 1.5 lakh booth level agents (BLAs) appointed by political parties, including 52,689 by the BJP 47,504 by RJD, 34,660 by JD(U) and 16,500 by the Congress, can continue to submit up to 10 forms per day even after the draft roll is published. The final electoral roll will be published on September 30, 2025. Those still aggrieved can file first appeal with the district magistrate and final one with the chief electoral officer. Further additions to the electoral roll can be made even after the Bihar poll is announced, that is, till the last day of filing of nominations.

Gaza war: Hamas gives 'positive' response to latest ceasefire proposal; says 'fully prepared' for negotiations to end conflict
Israel-Hamas war Hamas said on Friday it has given a 'positive' response to the latest proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza but called for further talks to implement an agreement, if reached. "Hamas has submitted its positive response to the Egyptian and Qatari mediators. We are fully prepared to immediately enter into a round of negotiations regarding the mechanism for implementing this framework,' its statement read, according to The Associated Press. However, the statement did not elaborate on what needed to be worked out in implementation. Also, it was not clear if the statement meant it had accepted the proposal from US President Donald Trump for a 60-day ceasefire. We're going to know over the next 24 hours,' Trump told reporters on Air Force One late Thursday when asked if Hamas had agreed to the latest framework for a ceasefire. The Palestinian militant group, which controls Gaza, has been seeking guarantees that the initial truce would lead to a total end to the war, which began with its attacks inside Israel on October 7, 2023, and the latter's subsequent military retaliation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like '혈액순환,'' 잘되니 종아리 쥐가 없어요!"
