BSF Trains Villagers In J&K Border Areas On How Firearms Work, Self-Defence
Srinagar:
The Border Security Force (BSF) is training villagers living in border areas in Jammu and Kashmir with self-defence techniques and firearms familiarisation, officials told NDTV.
The move comes amid Operation Sindoor, India's ongoing offensive against all forms of terror following the killing of 26 tourists in Pahalgam by Pakistan-linked terrorists.
The training is being given under the Village Defence Guard (VDG) programme, officials said, adding the villagers can supplement the BSF in stopping infiltration, smuggling using drones, and movement of illegal weapons.
Officials said the villagers have been taught basic firearms skills and other self-defence techniques so that they can remain calm and not panic during an emergency. The training is being organised at BSF posts.
For now, the firearms training is only a demonstration for familiarisation with assault rifles such as the AK series and INSAS, and how hand grenades work.
The civilians have been taught how to detect drones and track them, officials said. Night patrolling, noting down information from reconnaissance walks, and sending information to BSF check posts are some of the tasks the VDGs have been encouraged to do.
The BSF is also providing special self-defence training to women and teens in some areas, officials said.
"The enthusiasm of young people is seen in many border villages," an official said.
The VDGs include school teachers and panchayat heads.
BSF officials said vigilant civilians can become the first line of defence in stopping smuggling of arms and other items using drones.
With training, the BSF hopes the confidence of villagers will increase and they will become more active in sharing information with the paramilitary force.
This training campaign can become a model of citizen participation in national security, they said.
Under Operation Sindoor, India smashed terror and military infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir with precision missile strikes after the terror attack in Pahalgam.

Vance, Rubio played key roles in India-Pak. deescalation: Trump nominee
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio played a critical role in urging restraint during the recent India-Pakistan crisis, President Donald Trump's nominee for Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Paul Kapur, told lawmakers during his Senate confirmation hearing on Tuesday. 'As somebody from the outside looking in, it appeared to me that the Secretary [of State] and the Vice President were actively engaged in using their good offices to encourage de-escalation,' Mr. Kapur told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. 'I think that probably had a salutary effect. Ultimately, India and Pakistan made their own decisions to step back.' Mr. Kapur, currently a professor at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, was responding to questions about rising tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which India has attributed to Pakistan-based groups. Sen. Chris Van Hollen said he had good discussions with the Indian and Pakistani parliamentary delegations that were in Washington last week in the aftermath of the India-Pakistan crisis. 'Fragile ceasefire' 'President Trump and Secretary Rubio have taken credit for bringing about the ceasefire. As you probably already know, the Indian government has denied that the ceasefire resulted from American mediation. But regardless, there's a fragile ceasefire in place. Secretary Rubio said this on May 10: 'I am pleased to announce the governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate cease-fire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site,' unquote. So, Dr. Kapur, if you are confirmed, what broad set of issues will you push India and Pakistan to discuss?' the Senator asked. Mr. Kapur said the U.S. and India share a host of common interests, ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific region, which is not dominated by China, expanding bilateral trade, and building economic relationships so that it is more symmetrical and more profitable. 'Facilitating technology sharing and innovation, and ensuring access to the energy necessary to fuel our economies. If confirmed, I'll work to further advance U.S.-India relations and put our partnership on course to realise its tremendous promise. On Pakistan, if confirmed, I will pursue security cooperation where it is beneficial to U.S. interests while seeking opportunities for bilateral collaboration in trade and investment,' Mr. Kapur said. 'South Asia recently avoided a costly conflict, with Vice-President Vance and Secretary Rubio intensely engaged on the issue. If confirmed, I will continue to promote long-standing U.S. security interests with India and Pakistan through the pursuit of peace and stability and the fight against terrorism,' he added. Expanding ties 'Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan are important for stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Sri Lanka and the Maldives are located along major oceanic trade routes, while Bangladesh boasts the largest economy in the region after India. If confirmed, I will advocate for enhanced U.S. cooperation with these countries to bolster our security, counterbalance China's influence and expand trade. In Afghanistan, if confirmed, I'll support President Trump and Secretary Rubio in bringing home wrongly detained Americans,' he said. Sen. James E Risch, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the recent conflict between India and Pakistan is deeply concerning and has shown that the U.S. must continue its counterterrorism cooperation across the region. 'The U.S. shares national security interests with both countries and we need a peace between them,' he said. (

Row over 'dirty' train for BSF, 4 suspended
NEW DELHI: Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has suspended four officials after controversy erupted over an old rake with dirty coaches being provided to transport BSF personnel from Tripura to J&K, for deployment during the Amarnath Yatra. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The train's rake was changed. And action has been taken. Four officials responsible for the lapse have been suspended," Vaishnaw said Wednesday. Railway ministry stated: "The railway minister said the dignity of security forces is paramount and such negligence will not be tolerated at any level. An enquiry has also been ordered, so that such lapses don't recur". The coaching depot officer and three senior section engineers of Alipurduar division were suspended. "Another train was used for transportation of BSF personnel," said an official. Earlier in the day, after social media users, reacting to videos that surfaced online, criticised Railways, Northeast Frontier Railway Zone dismissed the episode. "The allegation that BSF was provided such kind of coach for travel is incorrect. Coaches are provided for travel only after necessary maintenance, repairs and cleaning. This video is of an unexamined coach which was being sent for repair and was not meant for travel of BSF forces," it posted. About 1,200 BSF personnel, bound for Jammu Tawi, were scheduled to board the special train, starting from Udaipur in Tripura on June 6. The train had to make a few stops, with personnel also boarding from Tripura, Assam and West Bengal.

He urged the leaders to stay grounded, be responsive to people's concerns, and work with energy and empathy. 'The Prime Minister told us that 'vyavhaar (personal conduct)' and 'lokachar (public etiquette)' are what truly connect a leader with people. 'He encouraged us to be among the people and use every ounce of energy in service. We were reminded that governance isn't a checklist—it's a daily responsibility to improve lives,' the leader said. The BJP returned to power in Delhi after 27 years with a sweeping win in the February 2025 assembly elections. The party won 48 of the 70 seats, unseating the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had ruled the Capital since 2015. Both Kejriwal and his former deputy Manish Sisodia lost their seats. Since forming the government, chief minister Rekha Gupta has moved quickly to align Delhi's governance with central schemes. The Ayushman Bharat Yojana, the Centre's flagship health insurance scheme, was among the first to be implemented. The Prime Minister has also reviewed progress on the cleaning of the Yamuna—a major campaign priority for the BJP. The meeting came as the BJP marked the 11th anniversary of its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government and the first year of its third consecutive term at the Centre. In Delhi, the party is celebrating 100 days of its return to power. Ahead of the interaction, BJP MLA from Uttam Nagar Pawan Sharma told PTI, 'PM Modi had envisioned a 'Viksit Bharat, Viksit Delhi' before the elections. That vision is now becoming a reality. Issues such as drinking water, sewage systems and cleanliness that were long ignored are being actively addressed. We met PM Modi to seek his blessings and renew our commitment.'
