Andrea Berta closing in on first Arsenal arrival ahead of summer spending spree
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is a busy man - and he hasn't just been in negotiations with players recently, with a move for a new recruitment specialist gathering pace Arsenal are reportedly trying to strengthen their recruitment team ahead of a busy summer transfer window by moving to hire Matteo Tognozzi. The Gunners are embarking upon a hugely important off-season and new sporting director Andrea Berta is keen to bring in reinforcements. The club knows that they need to improve their squad if they are to take the next step under Mikel Arteta in 2025/26. Arsenal have finished second in the Premier League for three straight campaigns and were knocked out of the Champions League in the semi-finals by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain last season. Former Atletico Madrid recruitment chief Berta was hired in March with the remit to provide Arteta with key signings this summer. The Gunners have already snared Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi for £51million, but have a whole host of other players on their radar. They are not just working on signing players, though, with The Athletic reporting that Tognozzi is in advanced talks to join Berta's department. The 38-year-old Italian has previously worked for Juventus and Granada and is well regarded as a recruitment specialist. He made his name working under former Tottenham sporting director Fabio Paratici at Juventus. If Arsenal can conclude a deal, then Tognozzi will effectively replace Jason Ayto, who left last month having climbed the ranks over 10 years at the club to become assistant sporting director under Berta's predecessor Edu. Arsenal are keen to get Tognozzi on board soon because time is of the essence in the transfer market. Zubimendi is expected to become the first signing of what will be an extremely busy summer, with several other positions being looked at. According to reports in Greece, Arsenal are in talks with Genk over a deal for 17-year-old Greece international Konstantinos Karetsas. The young midfielder could cost the Gunners around £38m, although he would remain at Genk for next season to continue his development. HAVE YOUR SAY! What is the most important deal Arsenal can do this summer? Comment below. Meanwhile, the main focus is on landing a top-class centre-forward, with Arsenal keen on both RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres. A final decision on which they will go for is reportedly yet to be taken by Berta, who has been pondering the financial frameworks of the deals. Arsenal also have a long-term interest in Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams and would like to sign a new back-up goalkeeper after Neto returned to Bournemouth at the end of his loan deal. They are reportedly keeping an eye on Kepa Arrizabalaga, who performed well at Bournemouth last season and has a £5m release clause in his Chelsea contract. The club's co-chairman, Josh Kroenke, has made it clear that the Gunners mean business this summer. "We plan to invest to get behind winning and doing better next season," Kroenke said. "We're delighted we have our sporting director, Andrea, who will play an important role in this. "He is part of a unified and strong team, supported by the board, who are crystal clear on exactly what we need to do and the way in which we want to do it. The right way. The Arsenal way." Victor Osimhen transfer twist as £59m decision made on Man Utd target
Victor Osimhen is the subject of major interest from Manchester United, Galatasaray and Al-Hilal, with the striker now choosing to snub a move to one of those three clubs Victor Osimhen has rejected a move to Al-Hilal in a potential boost to Manchester United's hopes of signing the striker. Osimhen spent the season on loan at Galatasaray, firing them to the Turkish Super Lig and Turkish Cup double. He also previously starred for Napoli as they won the Serie A title back in 2023. But his career in Naples is over, with the Italian side keen to sell him this summer as he enters the final year of his contract. Gala are keen to bring him back to Istanbul on a permanent basis. But they faced a serious challenge from Hilal, who have cash to spent after missing out on the Saudi Pro League title this season. Hilal have just appointed Simeone Inzaghi as their new manager, fresh from leading Inter Milan to their second Champions League final in three years. They are able to call on bigger spending power than their Turkish rivals. But United are also sizing up a move for the 26-year-old as they continue to rebuild Ruben Amorim's squad. And in a huge boost for their hopes, it appears that Hilal's move for the Nigerian international is dead in the water. Hilal had submitted a £59million bid to Napoli for Osimhen and were waiting for the Italian club to respond. They were also prepared to hand the striker a bumper salary of £21m per year plus bonuses. But Osimhen has now rejected that, dashing Hilal's dreams of bringing the striker to the Middle East. Galatasaray have now moved into pole position and are trying to complete a deal. They have offered Osimhen a salary of £17.7m per year and are racing to get him to put pen to paper. Gala boss Okan Buruk has admitted he expects to count on Osimhen in his squad next season. Buruk said recently: "Osimhen is important... He is positive and loves this place very much. He did not say goodbye to anyone after the last match. If he had the intention of leaving, his behavior would have been different. I see him as 51 percent staying." Osimhen himself insisted towards the end of the season that he had made a decision on his future. But the striker refused to give a definitive answer as he looked to help Gala wrap up the title. 'The rumour is going around about me linked with the Premier League. Of course, when you're one of the hottest strikers in the world you expect this type of thing, it's one of the biggest and best leagues in the world," he said. 'For me, I'm with Napoli, signed a new contract and enjoying my time there with the team, at the end of the season I've already made up my mind, I already know what I want to do in my career. 'Since I've started, I've been the one making my own decisions on everything and it's working out well for me. I already know the next step I want to take so for now I just want to finish the season strong.'

Toilet revamp and new heaters at Abergavenny Market Hall
Monmouthshire County Council's visitor attractions service applied to its planning department for listed building consent to carry out the works. Two heaters will be mounted to the wall on the entrance to the market and fixed to modern ceilings. They have been approved despite doubts they will be effective at heating the hall. Planning officer Victoria Cornock said in her report: 'There is some concern that the proposed heating will not work sufficiently due to the nature of the building and open louvered roof, however this is not a reason to withhold a consent. Overall, it is felt that the scheme has an acceptable impact on the character and significance of the listed building.' Works to the toilets are to widen the door opening from the market hall into the traders' loos, and from within the café to its toilets. This will result in the loss of a small amount of historic fabric however both openings have been modified Ms Cornock said it is felt 'the small amount of loss is outweighed by the benefit of providing facilities that are accessible, particularly give the high community value of the building'. A condition will ensure the existing tiled floor within the café toilets is retained in place to ensure it remains unaffected by the works. Materials will be required to match the existing handmade clay bricks, stone and lime mortar in all respects. The new wider openings will incorporate matching timber following advice from the heritage officer and the doors will also be timber. Abergavenny Market Hall was granted listed status in 1971 for its special interest as the largest and most prominent secular building in Abergavenny with good architectural qualities, designed by Wilson and Willcox who were well known Victorian architects from the West Country. The building is designed with a rural French Gothic style with some Italian touches, and is constructed in coursed, rock-faced sandstone with Bath limestone ashlar dressings and a natural slate roof.
