IKEA announces sudden closure of UK store that opened just two years ago after customer backlash
One unhappy customer described the outlet as being 'pointless' PACKING UP IKEA announces sudden closure of UK store that opened just two years ago after customer backlash Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IKEA has announced it is closing down a UK store it opened just two years ago following a backlash from customers. The famous Swedish homewares retailer has confirmed the Plan and Order point at the Stockport Merseyway Shopping Centre will cease in just a fortnight's time on June 16. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 IKEA is closing its Plan and Order outlet in Stockport (file photo) Credit: Getty The store in Greater Manchester is a smaller outlet than its usual out-of-town locations and is focused on kitchen, bedroom and living room planning. The aim was to provide somewhere for customers to go to get advice and expertise on home furnishing and somewhere where they could design their ideal fittings and get individual 3D interior plans from the interior designers. According to IKEA, the decision to close the store permanently was made due to 'a result of valuable learnings' where the company recognised their customers wanted a different retail experience, more along the lines of Click and Collect and return services. While the Stockport branch will close for good, other Plan and Order points, such as the ones in Dundee, York and Hull, will be adapted to meet those new demands and also include a small range of home furnishing accessories to buy. The current Stockport customers are now being directed to the next nearest main IKEA store, the branch in Ashton-under-Lyne in Tameside. Locals can also now pick up their IKEA purchases from Tesco Extra in Stockport and the Tesco Extra in Stretford as part of Click and Collect. Salma Azad, IKEA area manager said: 'After careful evaluation, we've made the difficult decision to close the IKEA Plan and Order Point at Merseyway Shopping Centre. 'In the two years since opening, we've taken valuable learnings, including how our customers prefer to meet IKEA, and we'll take these insights into future openings, to serve shoppers in a more impactful way. 'I want to sincerely thank all of the customers that have shopped with us in this time. IKEA Manchester, a store locals know and love, will continue to be the closest hub for home planning, meatballs and everything in between.' Bosses had hoped the Plan and Order in Stockport would 'become more accessible and sustainable for customers in the north west'. I did a haul of the new Oxford Street Ikea whilst on my lunch break & I managed to kit out with bargains under £3 However, it did come under criticism from some shoppers. In a Facebook post about the closure, one person wrote: 'I'm not surprised to be honest. It is very small.' While a second added: 'It wasn't the right shop for that place, they'd have been better off setting up an IKEA homeware and food shop there!' A third critic said: 'Really don't know why it opened in the first place. Pointless.' The news comes after IKEA opened its own hotel in the Canary Islands. The location offers cheap rooms, a swimming pool and breakfast is included while also offering some of their most popular homeware items. Why are retailers closing stores? RETAILERS have been feeling the squeeze since the pandemic, while shoppers are cutting back on spending due to the soaring cost of living crisis. High energy costs and a move to shopping online after the pandemic are also taking a toll, and many high street shops have struggled to keep going. However, additional costs have added further pain to an already struggling sector. The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs from April will cost the retail sector £2.3billion. At the same time, the minimum wage will rise to £12.21 an hour from April, and the minimum wage for people aged 18-20 will rise to £10 an hour, an increase of £1.40. The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year. It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year. Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025." It comes after almost 170,000 retail workers lost their jobs in 2024. End-of-year figures compiled by the Centre for Retail Research showed the number of job losses spiked amid the collapse of major chains such as Homebase and Ted Baker. It said its latest analysis showed that a total of 169,395 retail jobs were lost in the 2024 calendar year to date. This was up 49,990 – an increase of 41.9% – compared with 2023. It is the highest annual reading since more than 200,000 jobs were lost in 2020 in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced retailers to shut their stores during lockdowns. The centre said 38 major retailers went into administration in 2024, including household names such as Lloyds Pharmacy, Homebase, The Body Shop, Carpetright and Ted Baker. Around a third of all retail job losses in 2024, 33% or 55,914 in total, resulted from administrations. Experts have said small high street shops could face a particularly challenging 2025 because of Budget tax and wage changes. Professor Bamfield has warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector. "By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer's household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020."

‘Sign of the times' as Scots residents left gutted over closure of local store after 65 YEARS
Bosses have revealed the reasons behind the 'difficult decision' to close END OF AN ERA 'Sign of the times' as Scots residents left gutted over closure of local store after 65 YEARS A POPULAR high street store in a Scots town has pulled the shutters down after 65 years in business. The shop has been a staple in the town since June 1960 but is closing for good, leaving locals saddened by the news. Advertisement 1 Colin M Smith has been a staple in Kirriemuir since June 1960 Credit: Colin M Smith This award-winning Colin M Smith in Kirriemuir, Angus, has been a go-to for all things tech and home appliances. In 1973, the family-run business opened a new branch on East High Street in Forfar followed by another in the Abbeygate Shopping Centre in Arbroath in 2007. But after more than six decades, bosses have made the "difficult decision" to close the doors on the Kirriemuir branch and run all its operations from Forfar. The shop's owner, Johnny Smith, took to social media to announce the sad news - branding it the "end of an era". Advertisement He said: "Our Kirrie shop will bring down the shutters for the last time today. 'We will be relocating back to the Forfar store.' He added: 'More and more of our Kirrie customers come through to the Forfar store, due to on-site parking, and for the larger choice we have on display – a sign of the times. 'We will continue to serve the people of Kirrie, delivering six days of the week.' Advertisement Locals flocked to the comments to share their disappointment at the announcement. One wrote: "65 years is an incredible achievement. End of an Era: Beloved Scottish Discount Chain Closes Its Edinburgh Branch "As we all know, many shops come and go, but there's a reason that the Kirrie shop traded for 65 years. "It's sad for sure, but I think it's a tremendous feat really." Advertisement Another said: " It is a shame that you've had to close the Kirrie shop, but you're right when you say you have to move with the times. "Your family have served Kirrie well and will continue to do so I'm sure as you provided a great service to the area. "We've had a lot of laughs there and the video shop when we were younger. Chin up and keep doing what you do."

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A BUDGET-FRIENDLY buy can help to transform your locks, leaving them looking thicker than ever. This haircare product will nourish your roots, boosting growth and promoting a natural moisture balance. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 A Boots shopper heaped on the praise for a budget-friendly shampoo that transformed her locks (stock image) Credit: Getty One woman revealed the shampoo she used to level up her locks, calling it "the best". "I have a hair condition, which means I wore wigs," she explained. "Since using this shampoo, my hair grew so well and quite quick and now I don't use wigs anymore, couldn't be more happier." She added that she is "really happy with this shampoo". Boots shoppers can pick up the product, a 300ml bottle of Nature Spell Growth Complex Shampoo, for just £8.49. It is described as "a harmonious blend of Ayurvedic wisdom and modern hair care innovation". This product is designed to nurture your hair into "longer, stronger, and healthier" locks. Nature Spell infused the mixture with potent Ayurvedic herbs including Ashwagandha, Bhringraj, and Amla. According to the brand, the shampoo "not only helps stimulate healthy hair growth but also fortifies your hair from root to tip". The unique formulation is enriched with our exclusive root-growth complex that works to rejuvenate and strengthen hair. I'm a beauty fan but save money in Boots by switching to six bargain buys - the 75p shampoo and conditioner is a must With a sulphate-free formula, this product ensures your hair retains its natural moisture balance, promoting healthier, shinier, and more resilient strands. Manufacturers recommend applying a generous amount of the product to wet hair. Massage it into your scalp and through the lengths of your hair to create a rich lather. Rinse thoroughly and for best results, follow up with Nature Spell's conditioner to lock in moisture and nutrients. The shampoo is suitable for all hair types. Hair re-growth FAQs Anabel Kingsley, Consultant Trichologist and Brand President at Philip Kingsley spoke exclusively to Fabulous. How long does it take for hair to grow back? Hair grows, on average, half an inch a month. You cannot speed this up. Do rosemary oil and scalp massages work? Oils do not promote hair growth. In terms of rosemary oil, the current trend stems from one small study carried out on 50 men in 2015. No women were involved, and the study compared the effects of 2 per cent minoxidil to Rosemary oil. 2 per cent minoxidil doesn't do much for male pattern hair loss anyway, so the results were not very impressive. Oils do serve a purpose in conditioning hair treatments though. They help add shine and smooth the hair cuticle to lock-in moisture and improve combability. Scalp massages alone won't cure hair loss, but it can help relax you, aid in lymphatic drainage, exfoliate and help topicals penetrate. Are there any products or foods/vitamins you recommend someone using or eating to help with hair regrowth? To support healthy hair regrowth, if you are experiencing hair thinning we'd recommend our Density Preserving Scalp Drops clinically proven to help slow hair loss with continued daily use within three months. Telogen effluvium (hair shedding) due to nutritional deficiencies can often be simply treated with changes to your diet, and nutritional supplements such as our specially formulated Density Healthy Hair Complex and Density Amino Acid Booster. Iron and Ferritin (stored iron) in red meat, dried apricots and dark, leafy greens. Vitamin B12 in animal products and fortified plant-based foods. Protein from oily fish, lean meat, cottage cheese, tofu, nuts, chickpeas, and beans. However, there may be an underlying cause for their hair loss and rather than this being masked by using an off-the-shelf product, they should be encouraged to seek the advice of a specialist such as a Trichologist. Other customers shared their experiences with the product in the Boots review section. "I like it, [it has] pleasant, non-chemical scent, does not strip hair nor make it greasy," wrote one shopper. "This shampoo is the best I've ever used. My hairline has changed for the better! It's also probably the cheapest I've used. Great product!" said another buyer. "I was delighted to find this in Boots at a very reasonable price so bought the shampoo and conditioner. Smells lovely, lathers well, I will definitely buy this again," commented a third person. "Great shampoo, very good [for] sensitive scalps, leaves hair clean and healthy-feeling without weighing it down," said another Boots customer.
