Gattuso appointed as Italy's potential soccer saviour
Former hard-tackling midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has been appointed as Italy coach, tasked with reviving the country's already-flagging World Cup qualifying hopes.
Gattuso replaces Luciano Spalletti, who was fired last week after Italy lost their opening qualifier 3-0 at Norway to spark fears that the four-time champions will fail to qualify for a third straight World Cup.
Gattuso lifted one of those World Cups as a player, back in 2006.
"Gattuso is a symbol of Italian soccer, the blue shirt is like a second skin for him," Italian soccer federation president Gabriele Gravina said.
"His motivation, his professionalism and his experience will be fundamental to best face the national team's next matches.
"Aware of the importance of the objective we want to achieve, I thank him for the willingness and total dedication with which he accepted this challenge."
Claudio Ranieri was the Italian soccer federation's top choice to replace Spalletti but he turned down the offer.
Gattuso's last coaching job was at Hajduk Split but he left the Croatian club by mutual consent at the start of the month after just one season in charge.
The 47-year-old had previously coached AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia and Marseille, among others.
As a player, Gattuso also won two league titles and two Champions League trophies with Milan, where he made 468 appearances and scored 11 goals.
His only goal in 73 appearances for Italy was a fierce 25-metre strike against England in a 1-0 win in November 2000.
But Gattuso's only trophy as a coach was the Italian Cup with Napoli in 2010.
Italy are already nine points behind Norway in their World Cup qualifying group, albeit having played two matches fewer than the group leader.
The Azzurri followed up that dismal opening loss with a 2-0 win over minnows Moldova last Monday in what was Spalletti's final match in charge. He had revealed that he was being fired the previous day.
Gattuso's first match as Italy coach will be at home to Estonia on September 5. Israel are also in five-team group I.
Italy host Norway in the final round on November 16. Only the group winners advance directly to the 2026 tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The runners-up enter playoff brackets to be played next March.
That was the stage in which Italy were eliminated by Sweden and North Macedonia and ruled out of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, respectively.

Pogacar set for Tour glory after glorious Dauphine win
Slovenian great Tadej Pogacar keeps adding to his laurels, racing to his 99th career triumph with his first victory in the prestigious Criterium du Dauphine stage race. The UAE Team Emirates rider finished 59 seconds ahead of second-placed Jonas Vingegaard overall after controlling the eighth and final 133km stage on Sunday from Val-d'Arc to the Plateau du Mont-Cenis. "Once again today, the team did a great job," Pogacar said. "We managed to defend the jersey and we can go home happy and prepare for the Tour." Pogacar will seek his fourth Tour de France title in July and, on this form, looks an unstoppable favourite. The Slovenian finished third Sunday with the same time as his major rival, two-time Tour champion Vingegaard, of Visma-Lease a Bike, who finished second. Lenny Martinez won the final stage in 3 hours 34 minutes 18 seconds for Bahrain Victorious, atop the Plateau du Mont-Cenis located on the French-Italian border. The French rider finished 34 seconds ahead of Vingegaard and Pogacar. The world champion reacted with ease to Vingegaard's attack on the final climb to Col du Mont-Cenis in a tough race that Tour contenders use to fine-tune their preparations. After winning the opening stage, outsprinting Vingegaard and Mathieu van der Poel, Pogacar went on the attack in the mountains. He took charge by winning the sixth stage on Friday, climbing to the finish line alone to beat Vingegaard by over a minute and take an overall lead of 43 seconds over the Dane. He captured the seventh stage on Saturday in a similar fashion, beating Vingegaard by 14 seconds and extending his overall lead to 1:01. Sunday's stage was the last day of Romain Bardet's professional career. The popular Frenchman, who is retiring, finished second in the 2016 Tour. 'Finally': David Beckham receives long-awaited knighthood in King's Birthday Honours list, alongside 'controversial' London Mayor Sadiq Khan
It's taken longer than a World Cup penalty shootout, but David Beckham has finally scored a knighthood thanks to King Charles III. The 50-year-old football icon and philanthropist was named in the 2025 King's Birthday Honours list for his contributions to sport and charity, a recognition he described as "immensely proud" to receive. "Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour," Beckham said in a statement. "To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true." The former Manchester United midfielder and England captain, who led the national team for six years, has also become well known for his post-football philanthropy. Alongside raising a family with former Spice Girl and fashion designer Victoria Beckham, David has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2005 and in 2024 took on a new role with The King's Foundation, King Charles' charitable organisation. "I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I'm grateful to be recognised for the work that gives me so much fulfilment," he said. "It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I'm immensely proud and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family." Speaking on Sky News' Royal Report on Sunday, writer and broadcaster Esther Krakue said the long wait for Beckham's knighthood had become something of a running joke. "David Beckham for a long time almost became a bit of a meme because he and his wife had always done a lot of work with the Royal Family, and yet he never attained this honour," Krakue said. "Many people joked that he was probably never going to get it, because the Royal Family didn't want to look like they were handing out favours to their friends. "But after years, really decades of service, he's finally got that honour that I'm sure he's very happy to get." Beckham previously received an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II in 2003, but nominations for a knighthood were reportedly knocked back in 2011. Meanwhile, fellow recipient Sadiq Khan's inclusion on the honours list has sparked criticism. Ms Krakue described the London mayor's knighthood as "controversial", citing an alleged rise in knife crime and soaring council tax rates under his tenure. "I'm someone who doesn't believe that people who are still in office should receive those kinds of honours, I believe it's inappropriate,' she said. "…Yes, he (Khan) has been elected three times as London mayor, so in his own right, he is a successful politician in terms of getting re-elected, but since he came into power, knife crime in the capital has gone up 50 per cent and many people feel he has lost control of the streets, despite the fact that many people paying council tax in London has gone up by about 71 per cent since he became mayor. "So there is this feeling that he is being rewarded for failure, and this is not something that's holding the honour system in high esteem." Comparing Khan and Beckham, Krakue added: "Two very different people… making more headlines not really for the fact that they've been honoured but for why they've been honoured, which is raising a few eyebrows."
