Former England manger Gareth Southgate knighted for services for football

Former England manager Sir Gareth Southgate has received a knighthood for his services to football. Southgate led England to consecutive European Championship finals in 2020 and 2024 and the 2018 World Cup semi-finals. He accepted the honour from the Prince of Wales at Windsor Castle on Wednesday. He is the fourth England boss to be knighted, after Sir Walter Winterbottom, Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson, and the only manager to lead the England men's team to two major tournament finals. Southgate said that managing his country for eight years was 'an amazing privilege", but went on to admit he was 'not missing that either'. His resignation came following England's 2-1 final defeat to Spain in July last year. England midfielder Georgia Stanway believes Sarina Wiegman should be made an honorary dame if the Lionesses retain their Euros title in Switzerland next month. Speaking exclusively to ITV News on the day Sir Gareth Southgate was knighted at Buckingham Palace, Stanway said the Dutch head coach had 'brought a lot of success to our country in football [terms], but also in creating national happiness". She continued: "I feel like that definitely should be rewarded". The Bayern Munich star added it was 'unfortunate' that more Euro 2022 winners hadn't been given honours after ending England's 58-year wait for a major trophy. 'I feel like everybody should have been rewarded for those moments', she said. 'Not only a few players. But maybe in the future to come, more and more will be recognised.' Four Lionesses were named in the New Years honours list in 2022/23, after claiming silverware for a senior England side for the first time since 1966. Captain Leah Williamson received an OBE, while teammates Lucy Bronze, Beth Mead and Ellen White were awarded MBEs. Sarina Wiegman was also made an Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire, with the permission of the Dutch government. England's head coach was previously in contention for an honorary damehood, had she won the World Cup in 2023, according to The Telegraph, but England lost in the final against was succeeded as England manager by Thomas Tuchel ahead of next year's World Cup, when it will be 60 years since the men's national side won their only major honour. Under Southgate, England ended their 55-year wait for a men's final at Euro 2020 before being agonisingly beaten on penalties by Italy at Wembley. A late defeat to Spain three years later again saw the side just miss out on silverware. Southgate took charge of 102 England matches in total to add to the 57 caps he won for the national team as a player between 1995 and 2004. He was recognised for his services to association football in the New Year Honours in December. Asked how it felt to be knighted, Southgate said he was 'more emotional than I thought I might be'. He also paid tribute to William, who is president of the FA, as an 'amazing supporter' of both England and his favourite club Aston Villa, whom Southgate played for during his 16-year career. Southgate added: 'He's a genuine football fan and he was deeply passionate about the team doing well and how he might help as president of the FA and was I getting the right support when I needed it. So it was an immense backing to have. 'He kindly thanked me for what I'd done.'

His arrival is crucial for a group that needs players like him, leadership 'The first question Luka asked me was: 'Will we be a team built to win the championship? He has won six Champions Leagues and wants to be a star player from the start. 'He is important for what he will convey in terms of mentality, leadership and professionalism. 'The fact that he is an AC Milan fan makes this story even more exciting, and it would be great for him to have a stellar season as at the end of the season is the World Cup,' he added. According to ESPN, Modric will sign a one-year deal and have an option to extend it another season. His salary is reported to be £57,000-a-week, with bonuses. I went to Saudi for trophies, not money

Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy says criticism that he and other footballers chased money by moving to Saudi Arabia is wide of the mark. The 33-year-old left Chelsea for Al-Ahli in a £16million ($21.4m) deal in 2023, and in May the Afcon-winner helped his Saudi club win the Asian Champions League, making him among the first players to win both that competition and its European like many others, Mendy has been criticised for playing for money rather than prestige in the newly-rich Saudi Pro asked about such comments, Mendy told a joint-BBC Sport and BBC Africa interview: "Al-Ahli's project came along and they made me feel I had a big role to play. "Two years later, we won the Champions League for the first time in the club's history. So yes, that validates my choice. And I hope the coming years will validate it even more."He added: "Some people will quickly jump to conclusions and say the only reason is money. From the start, I always said that when I left Chelsea, I knew I was joining another team where I could win everything - which was no longer the case at Chelsea."The Blues have since won the Uefa Conference League, Europe's third-tier club competition, under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. But it comes after the regime's trophyless first two years, a period which has frustrated some supporters after the success enjoyed under Roman Abramovich's stewardship in the previous 19 years. Mendy has also been celebrating what he describes as a "historical win" with Senegal against England at Nottingham Forest's City Ground - but days earlier he had been in Dakar delivering a different kind of win. He is the sponsor of Yakaar, a school in Keur Massar, which seeks to improve funding and access to digital learning tools for local children from underprivileged backgrounds. Famously, as Mendy grew up in France, he was unemployed, aged 22, while struggling to find a club, with members of his family still living on the outskirts of why Yakaar, a word meaning "hope", was chosen - a word Mendy has carried with him in his career."Hope is what kept me going. When I was without a club, it was the hope of getting that first professional contract. "Then the hope of playing for the national team. The hope of making my family proud by doing the job I had always dreamed of."Indeed, hope is the best word to describe my career."Mendy was also asked whether the responsibility of being an African goalkeeper had weighed heavily on him."Of course. When I was in England, there weren't many African goalkeepers in top clubs," he admitted."Whether nationally or internationally, I had that responsibility. It's the same for other African goalkeepers like Andre Onana (at Manchester United) or Yassine Bounou (Al-Hilal)."
