Ingrained in BJP's DNA to pounce like vultures, politicise tragedies: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah

India Gazette4 hours ago

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 17 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, accusing them of exploiting tragedies for political gain while responding to the opposition's demands for his and others' resignation following the tragic stampede that claimed 11 lives near Chinnaswamy Stadium.
In a statement, Siddaramaiah criticised the BJP's approach, stating, 'Politicising tragedies is not new to the BJP. It is ingrained in their DNA to pounce like vultures over every incident of death, accident, or violence.'
The stampede occurred during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) victory celebrations on June 4.
Siddaramaiah defended his government's response, highlighting the decisive actions taken.
He noted that his administration suspended senior police officers, including the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner, and transferred the Chief of the State Intelligence Department following the incident, as well as relieving his political secretary of his duties.
'What happened near Chinnaswamy Stadium is an unfortunate accident. As a responsible government, we have taken accountability for the incident. We have suspended senior police officers, including the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner, and transferred the Chief of the State Intelligence Department. My political secretary has also been relieved of his duties. Additionally, we have constituted a one-member commission led by retired Justice John Michael Cunha to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter,' the statement read.
Despite these measures, Siddaramaiah accused the BJP of continuing to protest with political motives.
'This makes it evident that their motives are political rather than driven by genuine concern for the people,' he remarked, urging BJP leaders to release a list of their own leaders who resigned during similar past incidents before demanding his resignation.
He questioned the moral authority of the BJP, citing examples of previous tragedies under their rule, including the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, and the violence in Manipur, where no resignations or thorough investigations were conducted.
Siddaramaiah also referenced the Morbi bridge collapse in Gujarat and the Maha Kumbh Mela stampede in Uttar Pradesh, questioning the BJP's accountability in those cases.
'In 2002, during the Gujarat riots, approximately 2,000 innocent people from various communities lost their lives. Despite Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's suggestion to take responsibility and resign, the then-Chief Minister Narendra Modi neither stepped down nor expressed any remorse to date. Those demanding our resignation should first address this. In April this year, during the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, 26 Indians lost their lives. Our party did not demand the resignation of the Prime Minister over this incident. We merely requested a special parliamentary session to discuss it, which was also denied by the Prime Minister,' the statement read.
'For the past two years, Manipur has been engulfed in violence. Hundreds have lost their lives, yet the BJP Chief Minister, Biren Singh, clung to power for 20 months. He finally resigned only after the Supreme Court intervened, and violence continues to plague the state... In Gujarat, the Morbi bridge collapse claimed 140 lives. In January this year, 30 pilgrims lost their lives during the Maha Kumbh Mela. Were the Chief Ministers of those states not from the BJP? Not only did they not resign, but those governments have also not conducted a proper investigation into these incidents. Given this, what moral authority does the BJP in our state have to demand our resignation?' it added.
The Chief Minister emphasised that his government remains answerable to the seven crore people of Karnataka and is committed to a comprehensive investigation.
'Our government is answerable to the 7 crore people of Karnataka. Hence, in the stampede case, preliminary action has been taken against those who appeared negligent. A comprehensive and impartial investigation is being conducted under the leadership of a retired judge. Based on the commission's report, strict action will be taken against the culprits without hesitation,' he assured, calling on BJP leaders to 'abandon their street theatrics and act in accordance with their conscience.' 'Battle Has Begun': Khamenei After Trump's Threats Of Possible US Attack Amid Conflict

Last Updated: Khamenei announced that the battle has begun, after US President Donald Trump stated that the US knows where Khamenei is hiding amid the Iran-Israel conflict. Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Wednesday, in a message on X, wrote that the battle has begun. 'In the name of Nami, the battle begins. Ali returns to Khaybar with his Zulfiqar," a translation of his post suggested. Khamenei's post came hours after US President Donald Trump said Tuesday the US knows where Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei is hiding during the Israel-Iran conflict but doesn't want him killed 'for now." Trump urged, in a social media posting, Iran's 'UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER" as the five-day conflict continues to escalate. 'We know exactly where the so-called Supreme Leader is hiding," Trump said. 'He is an easy target, but is safe there – We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now. But we don't want missiles shot at civilians or American soldiers. Our patience is wearing thin." Trump added. Before his social media post, Trump had urged Tehran's 9.5 million residents to flee for their lives as he cut short his participation in an international summit to return to Washington for urgent talks with his national security team. The comments about Khamenei and calls for surrender came shortly after Trump, in a separate posting, touted complete control of the skies over Tehran. Trump, in the opening days of the conflict, rejected a plan presented by Israel to kill Khamenei, news agency ANI quoted a US official as saying. The Israelis had informed the Trump administration that they had developed a credible plan to kill Khamenei. However, White House officials informed the Israelis that Trump opposed such a move. Administration officials were concerned that the plan to kill Khamenei could enflame the conflict and potentially destabilise the region. Trump returned to the White House from his abbreviated trip to the Group of Seven summit in the Canadian Rockies early Tuesday. Israel, with five days of missile strikes, has done considerable damage to Iran and believes it can now deal a permanent blow to Tehran's nuclear program, particularly if it gets a little more help from the Republican President. Karnataka proposes to increase daily working hours, overtime

In what has riled the trade unions in Karnataka, the State government has proposed to bring an amendment to the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishment Act, 1961, to increase the daily working hours to 10 from the current nine hours, besides allowing more overtime hours. The proposed amendment, circulated by the Labour Department among the stakeholders to elicit their response, allows work hours to be increased to 10 a day and 48 a week. The proposal caps the total number of hours of work, including overtime, to 12 hours a day — up from the present 10 hours a day. Union govt.'s direction The Karnataka government, in its draft amendment, has cited the Union government's directions to all States to consider amending the working hour limits through legislative or regulatory changes appropriately. The Centre has also pointed out that similar amendment has been brought in Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand — all BJP-governed State. Among other amendments, there is a proposal to increase the total number of overtime hours per employee to 144 hours in a period of three continuous months from the present 50 hours. What the Act governs The Act governs a large number of shops and commercial establishments, including hotels, pubs, bars, restaurants, offices, and IT and ITES industries offering commercial services. The proposed amendment also seeks to remove those shops and commercial establishments employing less than 10 persons from the purview of the Act, which would mean they are exempted from filing annual returns. A meeting of stakeholders has been convened here on Wednesday by the Labour Department to finalise the amendment being brought to the 1961 Act and the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Rules, 1963.
