MLB rumors: Padres GM A.J. Preller gets urgent trade deadline message from rivals
The San Diego Padres are in second place in the NL West as the MLB trade deadline approaches. Even with a Los Angeles Dodgers slide ongoing, San Diego is still five games back in the division. With LA struggling and some expiring contracts on their team, AJ Preller and the Padres are expected to be active at the deadline. Rival executives told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal that they expect big moves from Preller.
'Some rival executives contend that San Diego Padres general manager A.J. Preller needs to act with urgency at the trade deadline. Their premise is not unreasonable.'
Rosenthal continued, 'Here's the thing, though: Preller always acts with urgency. He would do that if he were under contract through 2036 instead of 2026. He also would do it if every Padres pitcher were eligible for free agency. Pitching turnover is not something Preller frets over. It's actually part of his plan.'
The Padres should be looking to add an outfielder at the MLB trade deadline. Jurickson Profar left in free agency, and they have not gotten production out of left field all year. The Boston Red Sox have an outfield surplus, but don't seem to want to part with any of it. That could send them to the Minnesota Twins, who have a few things San Diego could use.
Every team could use a bullpen arm, and the Twins have two who could be traded. Pair one of Jhoan Duran or Griffin Jax with Willi Castro, and the Padres will be a solid playoff contender. Castro can play all three outfield positions and can play in the infield as well, but won't cost a ton. Jax or Duran would cost a huge prospect, which the Padres have given up in the past.
What are the Padres going to do at the MLB trade deadline? Last year, they took a big swing on Tanner Scott. Could a similar deal come this year?

Brandon Lowe, Jake Mangum drive the Rays' 7-run 4th inning in a 7-3 victory over the Angels
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Brandon Lowe hit a two-run homer and Jake Mangum had a two-run single during the Tampa Bay Rays' seven-run fourth inning in a 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night. Yandy Díaz scored a run and drove in another during the decisive inning in Tampa Bay's third win in 13 games. Ryan Pepiot (7-9) yielded five hits and two earned runs while pitching into the sixth inning for Tampa Bay, snapping his five-start winless streak. Jo Adell homered and drove in all three runs for the Angels, who dropped to 6-6 on their 13-game homestand. Los Angeles' José Soriano (7-9) threw three hitless innings before the Rays demolished him in the fourth. After Díaz led off with the Rays' first hit, Lowe followed with his 20th homer on a 411-foot shot to center. Four of Tampa Bay's next five batters got hits, and Díaz added an RBI grounder in his second at-bat. Adell hit a two-run shot for his 23rd homer in the fifth, and he added an RBI single in the sixth. Key moment The Angels' fifth inning could have been much bigger, but Logan O'Hoppe was thrown out at home while trying to score from first on Christian Moore's double before Oswald Peraza got doubled off first on Bryce Teodosio's sharp lineout to Lowe. Key stat Lowe has 20 homers in three straight seasons and four of his last five. Up next Tyler Anderson (2-7, 4.49 ERA) attempts to end his 18-start winless streak for Los Angeles in the series finale against Shane Baz (8-8, 4.79 ERA), who has lost five consecutive starts for Tampa Bay. ___ AP MLB:

Cardinals' top-ranked prospect makes history amid promotion
The post Cardinals' top-ranked prospect makes history amid promotion appeared first on ClutchPoints. With the St. Louis Cardinals in the mix of the NL Central, the organization decided to call up its top-ranked prospect to Triple-A. This decision led to making franchise history, as the team hopes he continues to improve as he develops at the Triple-A level. Reports indicate that the Cardinals promoted shortstop/second baseman JJ Wetherholt to Triple-A Memphis. Wetherholt, who is 22 years old, was the club's first-round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. He's the first minor leaguer to reach Triple-A within just one year of being drafted since 2013, when right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha accomplished the same feat. 'SS/2B JJ Wetherholt has been promoted to Triple-A Memphis. Wetherholt slashed .300/.425/.466 with 22 XBH, 34 RBI & 14 SB in 62 games with Springfield this year, leading the Texas League in OBP and OPS. He is the first Cardinals' minor leaguer to reach Triple-A or higher within a calendar year of being drafted since RHP Michael Wacha in 2013 and the first position player since third baseman Brett Wallace in 2009.' That's quite the accomplishment for Wetherholt, especially considering how young he is. It's a great sign for the franchise, though, as not only is JJ Wetherholt considered the Cardinals' No. 1 prospect, but he's also the No. 19-ranked prospect in the MLB Top 100 prospects list. He is also listed as the No. 8-ranked prospect shortstop in all of baseball. It's not entirely clear when he'll finally be promoted to the major league level, as the Cardinals have Masyn Winn holding it down at shortstop. However, it's possible the club moves JJ Wetherholt to second base instead whenever he does get promoted to MLB. We may not see Wetherholt reach the majors this season; however, there is a chance he is a September call-up later this season. Either way, the Cardinals have an exciting prospect on their hands, and it's only a matter of time before he reaches the top level.
