Gavin Rossdale clears up decade's long misconception about his band Bush

Gavin Rossdale, lead singer of Bush, has cleared up one of the long-standing myths about his band as he promotes their latest album.
First formed in 1992, the English rock band has had several hits over the decades, including Glycerine, Machinehead, and Swallowed.
The band's 1994 debut album, Sixteen Stone, is certified six times multi-platinum, and the group is utterly beloved by die-hard fans of the grunge-rock genre.
But despite their decades-long success, it appears fans have all been getting one major thing wrong when it comes to the band's name.
For years, there has been a misconception that the band is named after Shepherd's Bush – as an homage to where they first formed.
However, Gavin, the frontman, vocalist and rhythm guitarist, 59, has a rather different relationship with the area of West London, telling Metro: 'F**k Shepherd's Bush.'
'My mum was once mugged. I was with her. We were in Shepherd's Bush, and she was once mugged down this alleyway when you go down coming from the A40.
'And like they took her money and rings. It's a bit traumatising,' he said earnestly while chatting in a recording studio in Soho, London, as a quick promotional stop as he visited London for his daughter Daisy Lowe's wedding.
'So I've always wanted to get my f**king revenge on Shepherd's Bush, and to me, the Bush is the source of deep inspiration. So it works in many ways, nothing to do with Shepherd's Bush.
'It was just funny, because I thought Bush was a great word and it had a couple of meanings that I really related to.
'But nothing to do with Shepherd's Bush. F**k Shepherd's Bush.'
So there you have it!
The star has had a long and enviable career, and when asked what the biggest difference is from being a rockstar in the 90s to today, Gavin confesses that it's all about accountability.
'I think accountability, because you probably could get away with more then, because people weren't recording every single interaction.
'But yes,it's funny, because on one hand it seems so recent, and then, yet, when you see footage of the 90s, it looks like the 90s.
'It was a great time to come up through music, because I just snuck in when people were still buying albums. So that really helped out.
'Now I feel bad for young musicians, and musicians in general, who just want to provide music, and they're expensive to make, so it's hard for young bands.'
He added that being terrible in your early career is a rite of passage, and something that helps artists to grow, admitting that 'of course' he started out less than fantastic.
'I just found my way, but I was 100% not very good for ages. I mean, I think I feel confident now that I feel good on stage, and it's like a thing, but I'm fully aware that it took a minute.
'I remember the first show ever I did at the Half Moon pub in Herne Hill, the first ever show did, I was standing on stage in my first band, thinking, 'What the f**k am I doing? This is terrifying. I don't like the songs, I don't like the band, and I like the people.'
'I just didn't like anything about it. But I somehow got onto the next gig.
'We had like backing singers and percussion players, like my friends, doing music. This was in my first band, Midnight, and it was just like 12 people on stage. It was just so lost.'
This latest record is Bush's 10th studio album, and Gavin explained that he hopes it will soothe listeners in the way that it's helped him. More Trending
'This record is really dedicated to all of us who have – which is, by the way, everyone – gone through a lot of things, and are just trying their best to manage under all their own circumstances.
'Everybody has their circumstances, and everybody has their histories. So when I write a song like We're All The Same On The Inside, or Don't Be Afraid, those are soothing songs to myself that, in turn, I hope will be inherited by people and taken as theirs.'
Bush's 10th album, I Beat Loneliness , is released on July 18 on earMUSIC.

Hollyoaks 'confirms' more deaths in Summer Trailer as killer Jez is caught out

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The moment Hollyoaks fans have longed for is almost upon us, as confirmed in the show's brand new Summer Trailer, with the truth about Jez Blake (Jeremy Sheffield) finally set to be revealed. Jez, as viewers know, has been claiming lives in abundance, having started killing from a young age, with mum Martha (Sherrie Hewson) covering up his crimes. Since arriving in the village last year (two years in-universe following the time jump), he has murdered Dilly Harcourt (Emma Johnsey-Smith), Abe Fielding (Tyler Conti) and social worker Ian Stone. He's also claimed the life of Dennis Savage (Joe Tracini) and started an affair with Liberty (Jessamy Stoddart), all the while preparing to tie the knot with John Paul McQueen (James Sutton). Fans have waited eagerly to see the killer get his comeuppance and while we've yet to find out if he does, in fact, pay for his crimes, the brand new Summer Trailer confirms that Sienna (Anna Passey) finally sees him for who he truly is, which leaves her in serious danger. Buckle up fans, you're in for one dramatic summer! With so much to digest in the preview as Hollyoaks brings back its six weeks of summer theme, Metro thought it fitting to take a deeper dive into the new trailer to look closely at what's to come. With Jez imminently set to tie the knot on-screen, Hollyoaks has teased the outcome of the wedding, with John Paul left in tears in upcoming scenes as Jez talks about embracing his true killer nature. Meanwhile, Sienna -who is aware of some of his crimes after she helped him cover up Dilly's death earlier this year – comes to discover that Jez has been harbouring many murderous secrets as she breaks down at the allotment before demanding the truth. The much-loved character is left in danger as she speeds across the city walls, presumably from her murderous father, but will she manage to get to safety and expose Jez for who he truly is? The trailer also appears to imply that Jez commits another murder as he's seen seemingly strangling someone at the shed. But who is it? And hostage Robbie is also freed, with the short preview teasing him in the village – but will he manage to evade Jez's evil grip and perhaps assist Sienna in exposing the dastardly patriarch's murderous ways? There will be heartbreak this Summer for HayRay fans, with Dillon set to confess his feelings for boyfriend Lucas' dad Ste in a very unexpected turn of events. The scales fall from Ste's eyes in the wake of Dillon's admission, but is this the beginning of a love triangle? Or is Lucas still the one for Dillon? Either way, Lucas won't be too happy when he learns what's happened given all that he and Dillon have been through – with the couple deciding to give things another go just a matter of weeks ago. After giving it some thought, Rex decides to blow the whistle on human trafficking sisters Clare and Grace, landing the pair of them behind bars. But it seems they might have some help from estranged grandfather Froggy – whether they want it or not! – as she makes quite a debut, claiming that he wants to reconnect with the siblings. Clare, however, makes it quite clear that she wants nothing less, urging the baddie to stay away from her and Grace. More Trending The question is: Just how bad is Froggy if even the almighty villain that is Clare Devine wants nothing to do with him? With The Dog finally set to reopen its doors and a romance on the cards for he and Diane, Tony is on cloud nine. But Bobby's escape from prison threatens to destroy everything as he struggles with the fact the teen killed Verity. Mercedes, meanwhile, harbours Bobby at the McQueen residence and Tony finds himself heading down a dark and dangerous path – one that Diane is determined to save her one true love from. The most 'absurd' show on the BBC just dropped 6 new episodes

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Comedian Diane Morgan's widely praised BBC series Mandy has finally returned for another batch of chaos. The Philomena Cunk star, 49, has written, directs and stars in the sitcom where she plays the titular heroine – the 'hapless, jobless Mandy'. '[Her] daft adventures mostly end in disaster. She's got Big Dreams, but can she actually be bothered?' the show aptly describes itself. The theme tune? Barry Manilow's Mandy of course! Each season contains six bite-sized episodes making it the perfect one-week binge in which we see Mandy get up to genuinely bonkers hijinks with Morgan's quintessential flavour of character acting. Seriously, one episode opens with her stark naked on a table, save for some sushi adorned around her body, followed by a host of businessmen digging into their dinner. In another, she is entirely convinced she has eaten an old man's dog. Essentially, it's the kind of show that needs to be seen to be believed. The show also boasts a wild list of guest stars including Maxine Peake, Natalie Cassidy and Shaun Ryder to name a few, if you can believe it. Over the years it has made a mighty impression on viewers. 'Absolutely loved this show, so silly! Watched it with my mum and we still quote it haha,' Mat W wrote on Rotten Tomatoes. 'Stupid, stupid, stupid, predictable, cliche and utterly childish. Loving every minute of it,' one anonymous user quipped, saying one episode left them 'crying with laughter'. 'Diane Morgan is a comic genius: writer, director, comedienne, actress,' another anonymous user praised in a five-star review. 'The Quirkiness of Mandy is its best feauture. And its running time of 15 minutes works really well. Diane Morgans performance in Mandy is unique and different,' another echoed. 'Full of absurd and subversive humour,' Piotr W agreed. Critics are in agreement. 'It's bold and ludicrous, but economical too. It don't mean a thing. It is, however, a glorious release from all those things that do mean a thing,' The Time shared. 'This was enjoyably escapist comedy, daft for the sake of daftness, and all the more welcome for it,' the Daily Telegraph echoed. Although the humour may not always land with The Guardian warning it is 'not as tight or laugh out loud funny' and The Independent agreeing it's provokes wry smiles rather than belly laughs.' An official synopsis for the fourth season reads teases that she'll continue 'to live hand-to-wonky-mouth, cooking up enough dodgy side hustles and trashy cash hacks to hopefully climb up into the squeezed middle and out of the squashed bottom.' It adds: 'Constantly harassed, pursued and persecuted by her benefits officer (Tom Basden), Mandy finds solace in her friend Lola's (Michelle Greenidge) salon, drinking in the heady aroma of cheap bleach and Minty Pig nail polish.' More Trending Discussing how she settled on the tone of the show which is apparently based on a woman she met once, she once told The Guardian: 'Most people nowadays are doing downbeat, naturalistic comedy. I wanted to do something mad and silly. I crave silliness. 'A bit of pure escapism. It's turned out much weirder than I imagined. It's quite visual, like a Viz cartoon, but I'm happy with it.' Mandy is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. View More » This article was first published on July 15, 2025. Got a story? MasterChef scandal timeline: Where did it all go wrong for the BBC show?

Over the course of nine months, the present and future of MasterChef has changed dramatically. Ever since reports emerged last autumn of misconduct allegations against presenter Gregg Wallace, the hit BBC show has been rocked by scandal and uncertainty. From historic claims to the TV star's 'middle-class women of a certain age' comment, a lost has happened over the past few months. Just a week ago, things took another turn when it was revealed his longtime co-star John Torode's contract isn't being renewed, with new presenters set to step in. Here's how we got to where we are today… Last autumn, Gregg Wallace was accused of making 'inappropriate sexual comments' while working on BBC game show Impossible Celebrities in 2018. He was also accused of being rude and insulting to women on another programme in 2023. At the time, he said on social media that the claims had been investigated by the BBC six years earlier, and that 'the outcome of that was that [he] hadn't said anything sexual'. The following month, further allegations emerged around various incidents on the MasterChef set, including claims he appeared almost 'completely naked'. At the time, he was announced he would be stepping away from the show as producer Banijay started an investigation into historical allegations of misconduct. This included one former production member who made a formal complaint about an incident from other a decade ago, claiming he held her head and thrust his body towards her, mimicking a sex act, while she knelt to clean a mark his trousers. He was also accused of sexual harassment on MasterChef, and allegations he was 'fascinated' by an unnamed woman on a separate travel show who happened to be a lesbian. The allegations were made by 13 people who worked with him over a variety of shows over 17 years. The BBC said that they take any complaints 'seriously' and that they 'have robust processes in place' for such situations, while Wallace's lawyers claimed it is 'entirely false' that he engages in a 'behaviour of a sexually harassing nature'. Around the same time, in response to the reports, Sir Rod Stewart slammed Gregg and accused him of 'humiliating' his wife Penny Lancaster on the celebrity edition of MasterChef. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video In December 2024, Gregg Wallace made his now-infamous statement hitting back at 'middle-class women of a certain age'. He said: 'I've been doing MasterChef for 20 years, amateur, celebrity and professional MasterChef, and in that time, I have worked with over 4,000 contestants of all different ages, different backgrounds, all walks of life. 'Apparently now, I'm reading in the paper, there's been 13 complaints in that time. 'In the newspaper, I can see the complaints coming from a handful of middle-class women of a certain age, just from Celebrity MasterChef. This isn't right.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video His statement was met with fierce backlash, and Wallace quickly apologised for his initial Instagram video. 'I want to apologise for any offence that I caused with my post yesterday and any upset I may have caused to a lot of people,' he said. 'I wasn't in a good head space when I posted it. I've been under a huge amount of stress, a lot of emotion, I felt very alone, under siege when I posted it.' With the investigation underway, the BBC confirmed it was pulling the planned Celebrity MasterChef Christmas Cook Off special. A spokesperson said at the time: 'As we have said, MasterChef is an amazing competition which is life-changing for the chefs taking part and the current series of MasterChef: The Professionals is continuing as planned. 'The celebrity Christmas specials are obviously a different type of show and in the current circumstances we have decided not to broadcast them.' Days later, Wallace had reportedly told friends he 'has lost everything' amid the investigation, according to The Sun. That same month, it was revealed Grace Dent would replace Wallace on the next edition of Celebrity MaterChef. 'I've been watching MasterChef since I was a girl sitting with my dad on the sofa. My whole family watches it,' said the author and podcaster, who has been a guest on MasterChef in the past. She added: 'It's all about uncovering and championing talent – and to have ended up in this position, is more than a dream to me. 'I'm so excited that I can't eat, which is severely detrimental to a restaurant critic. I feel very lucky to be stepping in for the next Celebrity MasterChef.' Wallace's co-star John Torode added: 'I have loved working with Grace on MasterChef over the years. She has been an excellent guest, an inspiring critic and also set some incredible challenges.' In an interview with the Daily Mail published in April, Wallace said he believed it might be 'better' for his wife Anne-Marie Sterpini if he 'wasn't here'. After the interview was published, the 60-year-old TV presenter shared more thoughts on social media. He wrote on Instagram: 'I've said everything I needed to say in the interview with the Mail and meant every word. It was hard to do, but speaking honestly for myself, my family, and especially my mum, felt right. 'Right now, I don't want to add anything more. I've opened my heart, and that has to be enough. 'There will be a lot of noise, I get that, but I won't be joining in. I need space to heal and to be with the people who know who I really am.' Earlier this month, it was reported Wallace was planning legal action against the BBC and the MasterChef production team, claiming he faced discrimination due to his autism. It was revealed that 50 more people had approached the corporation with claims against him. 'Gregg is guilty of bad jokes and rough humour,' a source told The Telegraph. 'But so many people on the show talked openly about suspecting that he had autism for years before he got his diagnosis.' Days later, the findings of the investigation were revealed as 45 out of the 83 allegations against him were substantiated, including one allegation of 'unwelcome physical contact. In a statement to the PA news agency, Wallace said he was 'deeply sorry for any distress' his behaviour caused, adding that he 'never set out to harm or humiliate' anyone. He continued: 'A late autism diagnosis has helped me understand how I communicate and how I'm perceived. I'm still learning. 'Banijay have given me great support, and I thank them. But in the end, the BBC left me exposed to trial by media and the damage it leaves in its wake.' Days after the findings were announced, it was reported John Torode had been sacked from MasterChef. There had been reports he was accused of using racist language, and the BBC and Banijay UK confirmed his contract will not be renewed. Torode took to social media and wrote: 'Although I haven't heard from anyone at the BBC or Banijay – I am seeing and reading that I've been 'sacked' from MasterChef and I repeat that I have no recollection of what I'm accused of.' A Banijay spokesperson said: 'In response to John Torode's statement, it is important to stress that Banijay UK takes this matter incredibly seriously. 'The legal team at Lewis Silkin that investigated the allegations relating to Gregg Wallace also substantiated an accusation of highly offensive racist language against John Torode which occurred in 2018.' And a BBC spokesperson added: 'The BBC takes this upheld finding extremely seriously. 'We will not tolerate racist language of any kind and, as we have already said, we told Banijay UK, the makers of MasterChef, that action must be taken. John Torode's contract on MasterChef will not be renewed.' Over the weekend, it was reported that Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebbutt is set to join MasterChef. More Trending According to The Sun, he will be joined by Great British Menu chef Andi Oliver. A source said: 'Matt is seen as a really safe pair of hands by the BBC. He has been in the frame for some time and is now being lined up for MasterChef. View More » 'The BBC are keen to bring Andi Oliver on board too. She has been so popular as host of the Great British Menu.' Got a story?
