Tighten security: Intelligence agencies to Mizoram govt after Pahalgam terror attack
Aizawl: Intelligence agencies have reportedly advised the Mizoram govt to tighten security in view of Tuesday's terror attacks in Jammu & Kashmir's Pahalgam leaving 26 tourists dead, a senior state police official said on Thursday.
The official told TOI that the possibility of terror outfits creating law-and-order problems and even attacks by infiltrating through 318km-long Mizoram-Bangladesh border and also through neighbouring states like Assam and Tripura cannot be ruled out in view of the alleged influx of illegal migrants in the two states from Bangladesh.
He said the security along the Bangladesh border has been beefed up after the turmoil in the neighbouring country especially after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted during early Aug last year. Security has also been tightened in southern Mizoram's Lawngtlai district bordering Myanmar ang Bangladesh to prevent possible infiltration by militant groups after the Arakan Army (AA) captured all Myanmar army camps along the western Rakhine state of Myanmar bordering Bangladesh.
In accordance with the Centre's instructions, preventive measures have also been in place to guard the border areas to avert influx of Rohingya Muslims from refugee camps in Bangladesh and also from Rakhine state where the community has been facing persecution from the Myanmar military junta as well as the AA militants.
Situated in a strategic location and surrounded by trouble-torn countries of Myanmar and Bangladesh and also ethnic strife-hit Manipur, Mizoram has become a home for over 41,000 refugees and internally displaced people, including 33,023 people from Myanmar as of Tuesday. There are also over 2,000 refugees belonging to the Bawm community who are ethnic Mizos taking shelter in Lawngtlai district at present.
"The state govt has been exploring all possibilities to maintain peace in Mizoram, which is one of the most peaceful states in the country, despite being flooded with refugees as the state is sandwiched between Myanmar and Bangladesh with which the state is sharing a total 722km-long international border with the two neighbouring countries," a home department official said.

Minor found murdered in Dehu Road, cousin injured
1 2 3 Pune: The Dehu Road police are searching for a man who is on the run after stabbing a 16-year-old youth to death and assaulting the victim's 14-year-old cousin. The incident happened late on Wednesday night on an open plot near Sainathnagar. The victim's body was found in a forest area near Thomas Colony in Dehu Road in the early hours of Thursday. "The victim's cousin, who sustained a stab injury to his stomach, is undergoing treatment in a hospital in Dehu Road area," senior police inspector Vikram Bansode of the Dehu Road police told TOI. Bansode said, "Prima facie investigations revealed that the murder was the fallout of a dispute over the victim's relationship with a girl. We have fanned three teams to trace the suspect." The officer said that the victim just passed his SSC examination and was helping his father in their bakery business. "For the last few months, the youth was in a relationship with a girl from the Somatane Phata area. The suspect, who is the girl's friend, was against this relationship. A few months ago, he had heated arguments with the victim over the same issue," the officer said. Bansode said that on Wednesday around 10pm, the youth left home after receiving a call from the suspect. He went to an open plot near Sainathnagar. "The duo entered into a dispute over the girl, following which the victim called his cousin and told him to come there," Bansode said. He said that the victim's cousin told the police that when he reached there, he saw his brother and the suspect having heated arguments. The suspect suddenly stabbed the victim with a knife. When the cousin tried to intervene, the suspect stabbed him too. "The cousin then fled from there and alerted his friends and family members. His friends admitted him to a hospital and alerted the police," he said. Bansode said that the police rushed to the spot but found nothing there. "Our 50 men carried out searches through the night in the forest area and found the victim's body in the early hours of Thursday. He had injuries on his throat and stomach," Bansode said. The police have found a knife and a mobile handset at the spot. "Investigations so far revealed that the suspect hails from Gopalganj district in Bihar. He earlier used to stay at Chikhali and worked in a private company. We will soon arrest him," Bansode said. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . How Ludhiana West bypoll altered Rupani's fate: Was to leave with wife on June 5, rescheduled UK visit for campaigning, says Jakhar
Chandigarh: Punjab BJP affairs in-charge and former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, who was among those killed in a plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday, had rescheduled his family visit to the United Kingdom from June 5 to June 12 owing to the Ludhiana West byelection, according to Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar. "This is very unfortunate. This is how destiny and fate plays out that he came into harm's way. He was to leave along with his wife on June 5, but rescheduled his visit to campaign for Ludhiana West bypoll," Jakhar told TOI. "I believe his wife took the flight on June 5 itself," Jakhar added. Rupani had campaigned for party candidate Jeewan Gupta for a week. A BJP leader said he went back to Gujarat a couple of days ago, taking a flight from Chandigarh. Punjab BJP leader Parminder Singh Brar, while mourning the death of Rupani in a Facebook post, said Rupani was "on a solo journey to see his daughter in London. His wife had already arrived on June 5. They were supposed to travel together, but due to the Ludhiana West byelection, he postponed his trip by a week. Fate had different plans…" Brar added, "We were just together in Ludhiana two days ago. Still, can't come to terms with the fact that he's no longer with us. A truly wonderful person – compassionate, humble, and radiating warmth. One meeting with him and you'd never forget him." Punjab BJP state treasurer Gurdev Sharma Debi said, "He campaigned in Ludhiana for over a week. He was so hardworking that after campaigning, he would hold meetings with party leaders and workers which would continue till late night." Rupani was appointed as Punjab affairs in-charge of BJP in Sept 2022, days before old allies Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and BJP parted ways with each other over now repealed farm laws. He was all praise for Jakhar when the latter was appointed as Punjab BJP president in July 2023 as the saffron party aimed to increase its mass base in the state. Mourning Rupani's demise, Jakhar Thursday said, "He was a thorough gentleman, very sober, soft spoken and had no arrogance at all. His demise is a big loss to family, to Gujarat and to the politics as such people are very rare. I have been a big admirer of him and had a great equation with him." Jakhar also put out a post on X to express grief with the families of plane crash victims. The post read, "The shocking news of Air India plane crash over Ahmedabad with 242 people on board is really heartbreaking. It's painful beyond words. In this sad hour my heart goes to those affected by this tragedy. MSID:: 121805058 413 | Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Ajit Pawar returns to sugar co-op poll after 40 yrs
1 2 3 Pune: Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar has returned to the politically charged world of sugar cooperatives election after almost 40 years, filing his own nomination for the Malegaon mills. He will be one among the 90 candidates in the fray for 21 seats to the Malegaon sugar mill board, which has been under the control of the deputy CM himself for the last few decades. The Malegaon sugar mill is located in the stronghold of Pawars in Baramati and the win in the election is considered prestigious and essential for the family to continue its dominance in the sugar cooperative sector, while also sending a strong message to opponents. Meanwhile, this is for the first time that election to the particular sugar mill is being held after the split in the Pawar family and the NCP. The deadline for withdrawal of the nominations ended at 3pm on Thursday, after which 90 candidates, including Ajit Pawar, remained in the fray. Speaking to TOI, election officer Yashwant Mane said, "Members of the Malegaon sugar mill belong to 37 villages of Baramati and there are around 20,000 voters. Voting will be held on June 22 to elect a body of 21 board members." The counting of votes is on June 24 and the results will be declared later in the day, according to election officials. Ajit Pawar contested his first election in the cooperative sector in 1984 for the Chhatrapati sugar mill, before he was introduced to mainstream politics by uncle Sharad Pawar. However, after contesting the Lok Sabha election in 1991 from the Baramati seat and kicking off his political career, Pawar never went back to contest sugar mill elections. He has handled various important portfolios in various govts and held the position of deputy CM for a record six times. He is influential in the sugar cooperative sector and ensures his panel remains on the board of directors every time. However, this time, after a long gap of over 40 years, Pawar has decided to contest the sugar cooperative poll himself. According to his close associates, he made the deliberate choice to maintain his dominance in the sugar mill circuit. "Over the last five years, opposition was accusing the Pawar-backed elected body of mismanagement and corruption. That apart, there is an NCP (SP) faction which will also be contesting the election — making it tougher for Pawar's panel to win. The deputy CM has entered the fray to boost the morale of his candidates, while attracting votes in his name," a close associate of Pawar told TOI. Pawar's Neelkantheshwar panel will take on two panels, including the NCP (SP)-backed Baliraja Sahakar Bachao panel and the Sahakar Bachao panel headed by Chandrarao Taware and Ranjan Taware — considered Pawar political rivals.
