, says tariffs may not significantly hinder the overall economy. While consumption will be insulated due to domestic focus, economic momentum is slowing post-Covid. Moderate growth and slower earnings are present. High growth exists in specific market areas. The internet sector shows 25-30% growth. Some internet companies can sustain growth at double or triple the
nominal GDP growth
.
It has been a show of resilience for the past two days at least. It seems like all the negative was already done with. All through July, we have had a consistent FII selling. The index alone has lost about 900 odd points or so. Do you think the worst is behind us?
Pankaj Murarka:
For the time being, it looks like some of this bad news is in the price. Directionally, we are still very much in a bull market. I see any fall as a correction in the larger bull market. I still think that the index can do about 12-13% CAGR returns this year and probably over the next two to three years.

In that context, probably first quarter numbers have been pretty much okay. The good thing is that we have arrested the earnings downgrade cycle and now incrementally earnings have stabilised. Hopefully from the second half of the year, we should see improvement in earnings going ahead. A fair bit of monetary and fiscal stimulus has been injected into the economy in the budget through tax cuts and then by RBI with a front loading of 50 basis points rate cut. Combining all of that, I am looking forward to a much better economy in the second half of the year and an uplift in
earnings growth
. I would think that the market should find a floor somewhere around these levels over the next few weeks.
Coming to earnings, what is going to lead the recovery first and would it be more consumer facing sectors because they also are working with a low base?
Pankaj Murarka:
True, but before that let me just put the aggregate picture in play. Last year, we had probably one of the slowest earnings growth. In the last five years, post Covid at 5% for Nifty 50 index and the earnings growth for top 200 companies was not very different at about 7 odd percent. So, it was probably one of the slowest earnings growth in the last five years.
While we will see some improvement in earnings this year, I must concede that earnings growth this year will not be very significant. If we can do a low double digit, around 10% growth on the Nifty index for Nifty index companies, that will not be a bad outcome. Probably next year is when we get into mid-teens kind of earnings growth. So, it will be a gradual recovery cycle both on the economy and earnings, and that is the one point I wanted to say.

Obviously, you are right that there is a skew in terms of earnings. I still think that financials are coming off a low base and given that the margins have been impacted in the first quarter and probably the first half because of the front load rate cuts by the RBI, in the second half of the year we probably would see earnings recovery in financials and so that should lead.
I agree with you that we are probably coming out of almost two-and-a-half years of consumer slowdown, and so probably in the second half of the year, we should see an improvement in earnings trajectory for consumers as well.
But the bigger concern is what happens with respect to the tariff and in this uncertain time, have you spotted any sectors which you believe will be insulated from the tariff tantrum?
Pankaj Murarka
: Yes, it is a pretty unwelcome move in terms of the tariffs that we will end up facing. But I still think that those are transitory and eventually these are all bargaining tactics. Eventually India and the US will have a deal in place. Now whether that happens in 8 weeks or 12 is anybody's guess. I still think that the long-term effective tariffs on India will be much lower than what it has been proposed. Having said that, tariffs will have some impact especially on highly export dependent sectors like textiles, gems and jewelleries and few others.
On the aggregate growth basis, I still think the aggregate negative headwind that will emerge from tariffs for the economy is still moderate and manageable. Probably a 30-40 basis points hit on the aggregate GDP and despite tariff headwinds, India can still do a 6.2-6.3% growth this year which is similar to what we did last year at 6.5%.

At the aggregate level, I still think tariffs are not a big headwind for the economy as a whole. Yes, consumption will be one of those pockets given that complete domestic orientation will remain insulated from it. All of us have to consider that there is a downward reset in terms of economic momentum from what we saw post Covid. So in an environment where economic growth is moderate and earnings have slowed down, high growth can be seen in some pockets of markets. My favourite sector is the internet sector and that is the sector where we are seeing growth still at 25-30% and many companies in that sector can sustain growth which can be 2x or 3x of the underlying nominal GDP growth. So, it probably remains one of my preferred places to find high growth companies in an economy and market where there is an earnings slowdown.

Air India widebody fleet upgrade delayed again, likely to be done by October 2028
NEW DELHI: Air India's upgrade of its legacy widebody fleet has been delayed again. The airline now hopes to complete the task by October 2028, about a year longer than the five-year plan announced earlier. Supply chain constraints since Covid have delayed Tata's $400 million fleet retrofit programme for "delivering a world class flying experience and enhancing operational reliability across its legacy fleet". The airline said it had finally started the upgrade programme for its legacy widebody fleet with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The work is now expected to finish by October 2028, "with the timeline having shifted due to supply chain delays". In its last few cash-starved state-owned years, Air India had no funds for cabin maintenance or upkeep, and poor in-flight experience on those planes remains among the biggest irritants for passengers on long-haul routes on which these aircraft are deployed. "Air India has commenced the widebody retrofit programme for its legacy B787-8 aircraft, with the first of 26 aircraft (VT-ANT) having flown to a Boeing facility in Victorville, California, in July. A second aircraft is scheduled to depart for the same facility in Oct, with both expected to return to service in December. Retrofit programme for Air India's B787-8s, now on a steady schedule for completion by mid-2027, will introduce brand-new interiors featuring a three-class configuration," the airline said in a statement. Starting early 2027, the airline will additionally retrofit 13 of its legacy Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, aiming for completion by Oct 2028, with the timeline having shifted due to supply chain delays. As part of a reliability enhancement programme, Air India said it would upgrade the avionics and other critical components of the 26 legacy B787-8 aircraft. "This is intended to reduce operational disruptions." Additionally, seven of the 26 B787-8s will undergo heavy, scheduled maintenance (D-checks) in Victorville. The airline said the retrofit programme for 27 legacy narrowbody A320neo aircraft commenced last Sept. It is "progressing per schedule".

Arsenal's aggressive transfer strategy and rising academy stars fuel 2025 title hopes
After watching three consecutive Premier League titles slip through their fingers, Arsenal have opened their wallet wide in the close season, completing early moves to ensure squad depth does not derail their championship dreams again. Having finished second in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns, Arsenal failed to build on that momentum in the transfer market last summer. In came midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, defender Cristhian Mosquera, winger Noni Madueke, 'keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and striker Viktor Gyokeres—the final piece of the puzzle. 'I was extremely happy with the way that we have approached the window and how aggressive we've been,' Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said. 'So far, we are very happy with what we have achieved. Make sure that at the end of the window, we continue to be super happy. Tactical shift Live Events Gyokeres's arrival also suggests a potential tactical shift in Arsenal's style, with the striker poles apart from how Havertz operates when leading the line. While the German constantly drops deep, Gyokeres's natural habitat is in the final third and his direct style might force Arsenal to get the ball upfield faster. Spaniard Zubimendi's mobility, his deeplying playmaking skills and defensive nous will give Arsenal's midfield a measure of steel while also controlling the tempo. Norgaard's tactical awareness and versatility makes him a welcome addition while the Dane also brings Premier League and leadership experience having captained Brentford. Academy gems While the big-money signings grab the headlines, Arsenal's famed academy continues producing gems. Last season heralded the arrival of Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly on the big stage as the teenagers played a fearless and refreshing brand of football. Now, one more teenager is knocking on the door—15-year-old Max Dowman, who Arteta described as special. Arteta has succeeded in making Arsenal contenders but he must now take the final step to lift silverware and squad depth can no longer be an excuse as they hunt for a first trophy since winning the FA Cup five years ago.

How Bawadia Kalan built on urban desires & gaps to register high rise
Bhopal: The Bawadia Kalan area, also known as Arera Colony extension, has witnessed upscale real estate projects in the past decade, the likes of which Bhopal, for better or for worse, has not seen before. Experts attribute this rise to a number of reasons: Land use not being decided in the city for almost three decades now, a post-Covid boom when executives in companies and govt officials returned to the city amid work from home, people wishing to live in closed campuses and a lack of options. No less than 60 real estate projects are going on in the area, which has became a sought after location in Bhopal, due to its connectivity from all three sides of city- Arera Colony, Kolar Road, and Hoshanbagad road, and secondly due to premium covered campuses that attract residents from localities in heart of the cities, from open, uncovered colonies. The area has duplexes costing around Rs 4 crore and apartments worth Rs 2 crore, a trend that brought the city at par with big metropolitan cities. Price of 1500 square feet duplexes in upscale covered campuses in the area goes beyond Rs 12,000 per square foot. The per square feet price of land ranges from Rs 7,500 square feet to over Rs 15,000 square feet, depending on the area. A population of 3 lakh residing in 150 odd colonies in the area has brought in all facilities required for the upper middle class segment, including branded shops, schools, big hotels, hospitals and outlets of eatery chains. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Macatuba: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo If the industry experts are to be believed, the area has seen over 35 per cent hike in property rates in the past two years. All of this has transpired despite issues like traffic bottlenecks and stray animals menace. President of CREDAI Bhopal, Manoj Meek, said the land use has not been decided in the city for the past three decades now. Due to the fewer options available, the prices of the existing land areas or land banks like Bawadia Kalan have gone up. Prices in Bawadia Kalan have been on a higher side for a long time now, as it is an extension of Arera Colony. It is not just in Bawadia Kalan, but the prices in Salaiya too, which comes after Bawadia Kalan while moving from Arera Colony, has crossed Rs 5,000 per square feet and more. In 2012-13, the rates in the area were more than Rs 1,200 square feet. The prices in the area have sharply gone up post Covid pandemic, as people living in congested localities opted for ready to move in duplexes and apartments, Meek added. Bawadia Kalan area at present has four housing projects costing around Rs 3 crore and above, underlining that in the upscale housing sector Bawadia Kalan remains the preferred choice of big budget buyers and is also the area of the city that has the most expensive projects. One of the reasons for the area getting big budget buyers was, as pointed out by industry experts, attributed to corporate executives coming back home during or after Covid-19, and permanent work from home culture in many companies. Executives working in Manideep opted for Bawadia Kalan area due to its connectivity from two points: Vidya Nagar and Misrod rail under bridge from the Salaiya side. Besides a number of retired and serving senior govt officials, local businessmen have chosen Bawadia Kalan due to its location. Apart from duplexes and triplexes worth crores, the area was first in the city to have apartments worth crores. The trend started over eight years back. Realty experts also pointed out that unavailability of land leads to increase in prices, as the option becomes less and demand remains high, they said, adding that govt should also come up with more flyovers and widen roads so that buyers do not lose interest in posh city areas due to traffic and parking issues. Besides, the registry rates should be rationalized. The collector guideline rates have gone at par with the market rates in the areas, realtors further point.
