Former India wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha is being considered for a coaching role in the Bengal cricket structure, just six months after hanging up his boots. According to a PTI report, Saha has emerged as a strong contender to take up the position of head coach for the Bengal Under-23 team. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is reportedly keen on bringing the 40-year-old on board, with discussions already taking place between the two parties.
A CAB official confirmed the development, saying, 'The CAB brass will be zeroing in on all the candidates for various teams by next week. Obviously, Wriddhi has been sounded out, and a final decision will be taken next week. Apart from Sourav Ganguly and Pankaj Roy, he is the biggest name from Bengal with 40 Tests.'
Saha has been one of the most consistent performers for Bengal over the years and is widely respected for his knowledge of the game. If appointed, his presence could prove to be a valuable asset for the young players in the U-23 setup, who would benefit from his international experience and understanding of high-level cricket. The report also noted that Saha has already gained hands-on coaching experience by running multiple cricket centres, which further adds to his suitability for the role.
Importantly, his potential appointment will not interfere with Laxmi Ratan Shukla's current role as head coach of the Bengal senior team. Shukla is set to continue in that capacity for the upcoming season.
Saha had briefly parted ways with Bengal in 2022 due to differences with the state association and played the 2022–23 Ranji Trophy season for Tripura after receiving a No Objection Certificate. However, he returned to Bengal last year and retired from domestic cricket after completing the season with his home state.
Last season, the Bengal U-23 side was coached by Pranab Roy, the son of cricketing great Pankaj Roy. With CAB set to finalise coaching appointments soon, Saha's name is firmly in the mix for a significant step in his post-retirement career. Playing Career
In Test cricket, where he last played in December 2021, he featured in 40 matches, scoring 1,353 runs from 56 innings at an average of 29.41, including 3 centuries and 6 fifties, while effecting 92 catches and 12 stumpings. His One Day International (ODI) career, which concluded in November 2014, saw him play 9 matches, accumulating 41 runs from 5 innings at an average of 13.66, with 17 catches and 1 stumping. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), as of the 2024 season, Saha has participated in 170 matches, amassing 2,934 runs from 145 innings at an average of 24.25, highlighted by 1 century (the first in an IPL final) and 13 fifties, alongside 89 catches and 26 stumpings. He is widely recognized for his exceptional wicketkeeping prowess, characterized by his agility and reliable glovework, complementing his resilient batting in Tests and quick scoring ability in T20s.

Bumrah playing fifth Test would be great deal for us, says Gill

Manchester, Jul 28 (PTI) India captain Shubman Gill said it would be a big deal for the team if pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah manages to play series-deciding fifth Test despite the team's original plan to restrict him to three matches. Bumrah, who suffered a stress reaction earlier in the year, was initially scheduled to feature in only three Tests on the long England tour to manage his workload and prevent further injuries. He missed the second Test at Edgbaston but played in the other three. With England leading the series 2-1 after a draw in Manchester, India must win at The Oval to level the five-match contest. 'If he feels like he's fully fit and available for us, I think it would be a great deal for us," Gill told BBC's 'Test Match Special'. 'If he's not playing, I still think we have the right kind of bowling attack," Gill added. Bumrah bowled 33 overs in the fourth Test at Old Trafford and has approximately four and a half days to recover for the final match, which begins on July 31. He has bowled 119.4 overs in five innings across three Test matches so far, which is roughly 24 overs per innings. However, given that he is India's joint highest wicket-taker in the series with 14 scalps (with Mohd Siraj), including two five-wicket hauls from three matches, the team may be tempted to bring him back for the finale. 'Even if he isn't going to play, you wouldn't tell people now, just on a purely tactical basis," Cook said. 'They made a mistake at the beginning of the series saying he could only play three, because you get thrown into a situation like now where the series is still on the line. 'If he's not fit to play, not playing is the right decision," he added. India head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that all fast bowlers are available for selection ahead of the Oval Test and didn't rule out Bumrah featuring in a fourth match. 'All the fast bowlers are there. There is no injury scare," Gambhir asserted on Sunday. 'We haven't had any conversation around the combination for the last Test. 'No decision has been made on whether Jasprit Bumrah will play or not. Ultimately, whoever plays, they will try and do the job for the country," he added. After the Lord's Test, India suffered a spate of setbacks, with Arshdeep Singh nursing a blow to his bowling hand, Akash Deep ruled out with a groin issue, and Mohammed Siraj battling general fatigue. All-rounder Nitesh Kumar Reddy was also ruled out of the series. As a result, India had to fly in reinforcements from home. Anshul Kamboj joined the squad and was preferred over Prasidh Krishna in the playing XI. Images: PTI/Reuters Indian cricket team coach Gautam Gambhir was in a fiery mood as he hit back at England captain Ben Stokes for his offer of a draw when Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar were nearing their hundreds. Gambhir also praised Rishabh Pant for his heroics during the fourth India-England Test match at Manchester and provided injury updates about the pacers. The five-match Test series between India and England is currently tilted 2-1 in the home team's favour. The last match will be played at The Oval, but England could have sealed the series in Manchester after scoring a mammoth 669 in reply to India's first innings of 358. England had close to two days to bowl out India in the second innings, but a fighting century from skipper Shuman Gill and an unbeaten 203-run partnership between Jadeja and Sundar spoiled England's party. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Gambhir slams Stokes, England for handshake offer Despite India's fightback, Stokes managed to hog the headlines by some late antics on Day 5 as he offered a draw to India. Only 15 overs were left in the day's play, a draw looked imminent, but Jadeja and Sundar were also very close to their respective centuries, batting on scores of 89 and 80, respectively. India refused to take the offer of a handshake as both batters went on to complete their tons. 'If someone is batting on 90 and the other one is batting on 85, don't they deserve a hundred? Would they have walked off? If someone from the England side would have been batting on 90 or 85, if someone had the opportunity to get his first Test hundred, wouldn't you allow him to do it, if they weathered the storm? 'It's up to them. If they want to play that way, that's up to them. I've got nothing more to say,' Gambhir said at the post-match press conference. Gambhir: 'This is best Indian team right now' Gambhir also claimed that he is currently coaching the best possible Indian team, adding that the hard-earned draw at Manchester will only boost the morale of his side. 'You are asking someone who only believes in results,' Gambhir said. 'I've said that in the past as well, that I believe in results. We are still 2-1 down in the series. This is the Indian team. Yes there is inexperience but this is still the best Indian team right now. So for me, I think we are still down 2-1. And hopefully we can try and make it 2-2. That's going to be a good achievement. Anything that you do in these conditions, when you are put under pressure and you come out of those pressure moments, it is always a great feeling, and it just ends up giving a lot of confidence in the dressing room as well. 'And I'm sure going into The Oval, we will be high on confidence, but we can't take anything for granted. I think it's going to be a new game, it's going to be against a strong England side, and we absolutely will be up for it.' The former India opener Gambhir also heaped high praise on Pant, who batted in the first innings despite a fractured toe and was ready to bat again in the second innings if needed. 'It's been declared that he's out of the series,' Gambhir said. 'But one thing I want to say is that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on something Rishabh did for the team and for the country as well.'
