The reigning Masters champion, and Grand Slam winner is currently in action at the BMW Championship, where he described as his opening round as 'awful' despite a decent level-par scorecard.
Speaking at Caves Valley, McIlroy was asked if he remembered what he splashed his cash on after receiving his first pay cheque on tour.
The 36-year-old didn't reveal the brand as he's sponsored by a different watch manufacture these days, but he admitted it had all sorts of diamonds around it.
He said: 'It was a watch with diamonds around it.

"It was horrific. I can't believe … it was like the worst purchase ever.'
He added: "I do. It's not the make and model that I'm sponsored by now, so I'm not going to say it."
That first cheque might be long gone, but with his form this season and his career trajectory, there's no doubt there are plenty more to come during the the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
McIlroy ended the day eight shots behind leader Robert MacIntyre, who posted a stunning 62 as he surged into the lead.

McIlroy added: "Awful...I got off to a bad start. Sort of pieced it together a little bit in the middle of the round and clawed it back to even par. But drove the ball terribly.
Scottie Scheffler suffers major blow ahead of PGA Tour playoff event after $43 million season earnings are revealed
"Then when you're sort of hitting out of the rough from the fairway bunkers here...when I hit the fairways, I give myself chances. I need to hit more fairways the next three days.
"I think a little bit of work on the range, committing to a shot shape maybe a little bit more.
"Seemed like when I tried to hit the driver left to right today, it was better. Maybe just stick with that over the course of the week and try to dial that in. But yeah, definitely just hit to hit a few more fairways.
"I feel like I tried to hit too many tee shots today pretty neutral. If I aimed up the left and hit a cut, it seemed to work a little bit better."

Rory McIlroy hints at shock Ryder Cup pick as European PGA Tour outsider enters the frame for Bethpage Black selection
Rory McIlroy has sparked Ryder Cup buzz after dropping a major hint on a surprise name who could force his way into Luke Donald's team HALL PASS Rory McIlroy hints at shock Ryder Cup pick as European PGA Tour outsider enters the frame for Bethpage Black selection RORY McILROY has dropped a Ryder Cup shock while speaking after his second round at the BMW Championship. The five-time major champ reckons English outsider Harry Hall has 'maybe got a chance' of making Luke Donald's team for the September showdown against USA at Bethpage Black. 2 Rory McIlroy reckons Harry Hall could potentially force his way into Luke Donald's Ryder Cup plans 2 Harry Hall has been in fine form this season on the PGA Tour Advertisement Down ace McIlroy has already qualified for the biennial tournament but hinted at a possible surprise inclusion as he picked out English star Harry Hall. McIlroy fired a superb second-round 66 at the BMW Championship to move to four-under and inside the top 15. But he's just as interested in the leaderboard around him - where European's such as Tommy Fleetwood, Ludvig Aberg and Hall are all showing solid form ahead of the team competition next month. Speaking with the media after his second round at the FedEx Cup Playoff tournament, McIlroy reckons Hall's red-hot form could force Donald into a shock call. Advertisement He said: 'Yeah, it is. It's good. 'It's good to see Bob [McIntyre], Ludvig, Viktor, Tommy, even Harry Hall - that's maybe got a chance to play in the team. Yeah, it bodes well for a few weeks' time.' Hall has been one of Europe's most consistent performers on the PGA Tour this season, making 20 cuts from 23 starts, racking up 13 top-25s and four top-10s. The 27-year-old is still only 19th in the European points list but McIlroy knows that kind of consistency is hard to ignore, especially with Hall's FedEx Cup showing. Advertisement He added: 'Yeah, I played with Harry in his first start as a pro at the Dunhill Links a few years ago. I know him a little bit. 'Really nice player, great rhythm to his golf swing, and he's sort of done it a different way. He went over to UNLV and did it that way. But he's become a very consistent player, so we'll see what happens.' Ronnie O'Sullivan makes two 147 breaks in semi-final
Ronnie O'Sullivan hit two maximum breaks in his 6-3 victory over Chris Wakelin in the semi-finals of the Saudi Arabia Masters. The 49-year-old had to wait seven years since his last 147 break at the English Open in 2018, and two hours later he achieved his 17th career maximum and second of the night. O'Sullivan's first 147 came in the opening frame of the match and with the scores locked at 3-3, the Rocket completed a second to earn a £147,000 bonus for making two maximum breaks across the UK Championship, Masters, World Championship and Saudi Arabia Masters. Ronnie also slotted breaks of 134 and 142 in a dominant display and will take on Neil Robertson in the final of the competition. O'Sullivan told TNT Sports: "I'm sitting there at 3-3 thinking I'm probably going to lose this game after a maxi, a 142 and a 70 clearance. "He (Wakelin) is a monster. I said he's going to win a ranking event, he's so solid. He's better than solid, solid is a compliment, he's very reliable but he's got more than that. It's like Kyren Wilson. As a player he's very hard to break down. He's a superb competitor, superb player." Robertson beat Elliot Slessor 6-3 to reach the final before revealing he had met his pre-season goal of qualifying for the Tour Championship.

Shane Lowry set to go toe-to-toe with golfer that ''p*ssed me off"
Shane Lowry will go toe-to-toe with old rival Patrick Cantlay in the third round of the BMW Championship, having previously said how the American 'p*ssed me off' during their Ryder Cup singles match. The pair met in the Covid-disrupted 2021 Ryder Cup, where Cantlay beat Lowry 4&2 en route to a record Team USA win. Shortly after the tournament, Lowry voiced his frustration with Cantlay, saying, 'Patrick Cantlay p*ssed me off on the 8th hole if I'm honest. He was riling up the crowd whilst I was lining up my putt annoyed me quite a lot, and I didn't feel that it was good from him, but it is what it is." Fast forward to 2023, and Lowry clashed with Cantlay's caddie Joe LaCava after he continued to wave his hat near Rory McIlroy as the Northern Irish golfer lined up a putt on the 18th hole of his fourball match with the putt for a half of the match. "Hey Joe, get out of the way, you p****," Lowry told La Cava at the time while also telling him to 'f*** off'. La Cava turned to Lowry and told him to "Shut the f*** up." The tense encounter led to wild scenes as an irate Rory McIlroy lost his cool in the car park afterwards. Shane Lowry and Joe LaCava in 2023 Lowry and Cantlay will tee it up at 5:01 p.m. as they look to make a surge on moving day. It is unlikely there will be any great drama between the pair today. Even though the race to the FedEx Cup is among the most lucrative few paydays in golf, all attention turns to the Ryder Cup. Scotland's Bob MacIntyre sits top at 14-under-par while world number one Scottie Scheffler is nine-under-par. Team Europe's Ludvig Aberg and Tommy Fleetwood are hitting good form at the right time, with both players in the top five. After taking last week off, Rory McIlroy sits in the middle of the pack in 11th place with a late eagle boosting him up the leaderboard to sit at four-under-par, some 10 shots off the lead and five shots behind Scheffler. Shane Lowry is on one under par and will likely feature in next week's Tour Championship, while a strong finish could earn him automatic qualification to Team Europe.
