‘Black Swan' Dances Back Into Theaters for IMAX Anniversary Screenings
Directed by Aronofsky and shot by Matthew Libatique, 'Black Swan' has been specially remastered for the IMAX format, joining recent premium retro screenings like the upcoming golden anniversary of Steven Spielberg's 'Jaws' and the 10th anniversary of Robert Eggers' 'The Witch.'

According to Searchlight, more plans to celebrate 'Black Swan's' 15th birthday will be announced throughout the year, and the company has released a brand new trailer (below) to get things started. Portman swept the movie awards season that year for her physically and mentally grueling portrayal of sexually repressed New York City ballerina Nina Sayers, who spirals into madness and delusion when she takes on the dual role of the Swan Queen for a new interpretation of Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake.' Sending her world further into a tailspin are her helicopter mom (a wonderfully creepy Barbara Hershey), lascivious artistic director (Vincent Cassel), and confidante-turned-company-nemesis Lily (Mila Kunis).
'Black Swan' grossed more than $329 million at the global box office off a budget in the low eight figures, with nominations for Picture, Director, Cinematography, and Editing along with Portman's Best Actress win.
After opening the Venice Film Festival and premiering in theaters later in the fall, 'Black Swan' was subject to at least two controversies that ultimately had little impact on its legacy: First, that the film was an uncited reinterpretation of Satoshi Kon's 1997 anime film 'Perfect Blue,' about a former Japanese pop star driven to madness by an obsessive fan.
Another came from American Ballet Theatre dancer Sarah Lane, who served as Portman's dance double on the film and who allegedly did most of the onscreen dancing attributed to Portman, the actress' face digitally superimposed on Lane's body during the most challenging pointe work. Through numerous statements and interviews, the filmmakers resolved the issue, with the technical demands of Portman's performance ultimately undisputed despite Lane arguably not receiving the credit she felt was due. (Portman had studied ballerina as a child and then spent another year training for the 'Black Swan' production.)
Either way, 'Black Swan' is still remembered as a delirious mash-up of high art and sleaze, of 'The Red Shoes,' 'Carrie,' 'Showgirls,' and 'All About Eve,' a backstage melodrama now understood as one of the best films of the 21st century so far.
IMAX screenings of 'Black Swan' will take place in major cities throughout the U.S. and Canada, with tickets for select showings already available.

5 top new movies to stream this week on Netflix, HBO Max and more (July 22-28)
We're in the middle of summer, and the weather outside is certainly good enough that sitting at home watching movies might not be your top priority. However, the best streaming services are hoping to tempt you to stay indoors with a host of new flicks to watch this week. The biggest arrival is the debut of the long-awaited sports sequel 'Happy Gilmore 2' on Netflix. Adam Sandler is once again donning the hockey jersey of one of his most beloved comedy characters and stepping back onto the green for another round of anger-fueled golf. Plus, in the premium video-on-demand streaming world, 'Dangerous Animals' and 'Materialists' are hoping to convince you they're worth the rental fee, and they both make a good case for themselves. Below are my picks for the top new movies you can stream this week across all the biggest streaming services around. And don't forget to check out our companion guide to the best new TV shows you'll want to binge-watch over the next seven days. 'Jaws' is celebrating its 50th anniversary this summer, but if revisiting the Steve Speilberg classic isn't enough shark action for you, you might want to consider 'Dangerous Animals,' which frankly makes 'Jaws' look like a pleasant day at the beach. While the flimsy narrative has more holes in it than a surfboard chewed by a great white, Jai Courtney's deliciously unhinged performance is reason enough to give this intense thriller a watch. Zephyr (Hassie Harrison) is a drifter traveling around Australia's sunny Gold Coast who is abducted by a deranged serial killer called Tucker (Courtney) while going for a spot of surfing late at night. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Awaking chained to a bed in the hull of a rusty boat, Zephyr learns that Tucker has an obsession with sharks and feeds his various victims to these sharp-toothed sea creatures while filming the whole thing on a battered old camcorder. With time running out, Zephyr must find a way to escape and stop Tucker's reign of terror before she can become shark chum. Buy or rent on Amazon from July 21 In 2023, writer/director Celine Song blew me away with 'Past Lives.' It was among my favorite films of the year, and to this day ranks as perhaps the most heartachingly romantic movie I've ever watched. Her follow-up is 'Materialists,' and while the reception hasn't been quite as universally positive as it was for her debut, I'm still very eager to check this out. More of a romantic comedy than a romantic drama, and mining the well-worn genre trope of trying to find love in the increasingly tumultuous modern dating world, 'Materialists' stars Dakota Johnson as a New York City matchmaker who finds himself stuck in a thorny love triangle. On one side is the seemingly perfect guy (Pedro Pascal), and on the other is her imperfect ex-boyfriend (Chris Evans). Good luck choosing between them. Buy or rent on Amazon from July 21 I previously named "Until Dawn" as one of the top five worst movies I've seen in theatres in 2025 so far (and I've seen nearly 50 of them), so I can't exactly give this slasher horror a ringing endorsement. But, if you're a huge fan of the 2014 video game which inspired it, or just want a trashy horror that you can watch while also mocking alongside friends or a loved one, then 'Until Dawn' might fit the bill. At least now it's on Netflix, you don't have to pay a rental fee. This is a video game adaptation that is very loosely inspired by the PlayStation title from which it takes its name, as the characters, setting and location have all been changed. Instead of taking place in a snowy mountaintop cabin like the game, this version of 'Until Dawn' sees a group of friends trapped in a secluded house, and also stuck in a time loop. Each new loop brings a new terror, and it's their mission to survive the night and break free. Watch on Netflix from July 24 'Death of a Unicorn' is a horror-comedy with moments of fun, but it never quite manages to blend the two genres successfully enough to take full advantage of its admittedly novel premise. It falls into a less-exciting middle ground, and the subpar effects on the titular mythical creatures don't help much either. At least, a solid cast adds some star power with Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega and Richard E. Grant all involved and giving it their all throughout. The movie opens with a father (Rudd) and his spiky teenage daughter (Ortega) heading to an important business weekend where the former hopes to complete a lucrative business deal. On the way, they accidentally hit and kill a unicorn. Bringing the creature's corpse to the home of the father's billionaire boss kickstarts a chain of increasingly chaotic events. As the wealthy Leopold family, headed up by the smarmy Odell (Grant), looks to exploit the unicorn's healing properties for personal financial gain, nature fights back as a pack of vicious horned creatures arrive on the scene and cause complete chaos. Watch on HBO Max from July 25 Andy Sandler is stepping back onto the green as the long-awaited sequel to 'Happy Gilmore' arrives on Netflix this week. It's been almost 30 years since we last saw Gilmore, but it doesn't appear he's done all that much maturing in those decades. Based on the trailers, this comedy looks just as rage-fueled and loud-mouthed as its predecessor. Curiously, the plot of 'Happy Gilmore 2' is being kept under wraps, with Netflix itself not even offering an official logline, but based on the trailer, we can surmise that the sequel sees Gilmore come out of retirement and return to the professional golf scene to pay for his daughter's ballet school. It seems a standard setup for a sequel, but maybe there's a hidden twist? Questions can be asked about whether we need a 'Happy Gilmore' sequel after all this time, but I'm confident this original movie will be a Netflix hit and go straight to No. 1 in the streaming service's top 10 most-watched list. Zoe Kravitz, Austin Butler spotted out together at immersive NYC show after sparking romance rumors
Zoe Kravitz and Austin Butler — who've previously sparked romance rumors, and star together in the upcoming film, 'Caught Stealing' — were spotted out in NYC together last weekend. Multiple spies told Page Six that the duo was seen together at immersive theater company Punchdrunk's latest production, 'Viola's Room,' at the Shed in Hudson Yards. We hear that the pair was spotted going into the edgy show together, and also heading out into the night afterwards. They attended the show with their 'Caught Stealing' director Darren Aronofsky, a spy said. In April, the Post reported that rumors about the duo started while they were filming 'Caught Stealing' — and were seen kissing on the set as cameras rolled in October 2024, a month before filming wrapped. 'Viola's Room' is by the creators of the long-running, immersive downtown hit, 'Sleep No More,' which was known to draw lots of celebs — including Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Margot Robbie, Bono and more — as audience members wore masks as they took in the roving show. Kravitz, 36, had called off her engagement to Channing Tatum that same month after three years of dating. Butler, 33, and his former flame, model Kaia Gerber, reportedly called it quits toward the end of 2024, also after three years of dating. The stars have yet to address the buzz — though Butler's rep reportedly had previously denied there was any romance between the two. In their upcoming film, Butler stars as a former baseball player who's plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of '90s New York. The film is based on a book by Charlie Huston, who also penned the screenplay. This production, playing through Oct. 19, is more intimate and features a barefoot audience and the recorded voice of Helena Bonham Carter over headphones. Deadheads Are Really Going to Love IMAX This Summer
The Grateful Dead is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, from the massive 60-CD box set Enjoying the Ride to a book of rare Jim Marshall photographs. Now, the long, strange trip continues with two separate screenings on IMAX. Dead & Company — the offshoot that celebrated its 10th anniversary this year with another residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas — will livestream the last of their three shows in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. That live IMAX event takes place on Aug. 3, and features an opening set by the Trey Anastasio Band. The tickets come with a poster and lanyard. The 1977 film captures the band's five-night stand at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom in October of 1974, what they believed at the time to be their final run of shows. Co-directed by Jerry Garcia and Leon Gast, it marks the film's first time on the big screen in eight years, and its first time being shown via IMAX. Fans can also see the theatrical premiere of a bonus live performance of 'China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider,' which they can catch at the end of the film. 'It was the greatest screening I've ever experienced of a film I've seen hundreds of times,' the band's archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux said of the IMAX screening. In December 2024, the Dead were honored at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and were celebrated as MusiCares' Persons of the Year in January in Los Angeles. Just before bassist Phil Lesh died last fall, Bobby Weir told Rolling Stone the band was considering reuniting for the anniversary. 'I think when Phil checked out, so did that notion, because we don't have a bass player who's been playing with us for 60 years now,' he said. 'And that was the intriguing prospect. … I think you need somebody holding down the bottom. Phil had all kinds of ideas that were pretty much unique to him. I grew up with Phil holding down the bottom in his unique way.' He added: 'I suppose I could go back out. I wouldn't put anybody in his place, so it would be a trio at this point. It'd be me and two drummers. I'd have to think about that. I haven't thought about it — it's just now occurring to me that it's a possibility that we could do that, since you asked. … I guess we'll just see what the three of us can pull together.'
