Aprilia stands firm over Jorge Martin contract saga
Aprilia has stood firm over Jorge Martin's push to be released from his contract early and expects the defending MotoGP world champion to remain at the team at least until the end of 2026, it has said in a statement.
The Italian manufacturer has remained silent on the matter since Motorsport.com exclusively revealed Martin intended to invoke a clause in his contract to be released from the second year of his deal for 2026, allowing him to leave at the end of the season.

The agreement signed by Aprilia and Martin last year at the Italian GP is set to hold no binding effect for the second season. Motorsport.com understands that in the version accepted by Aprilia, Martin's representatives included a clause granting him full freedom to accept offers from other teams if he was not among the title contenders after last Sunday's French GP at Le Mans.

'Aprilia Racing denies that any negotiations have taken place between the parties to modify the duration of the contract, which remains as originally agreed upon. The team has no comment on matters that do not directly concern it but expects other teams to refrain from making any kind of offer to riders who are under contract. Such behaviour would, in any case, not be legitimate.

'The entire Team will continue to support Jorge throughout his recovery process, as it always has, and looks forward to seeing him back on track with the RS-GP.'
Aprilia's comment on it 'expect[ing] other teams to refrain from making any kind of offer to riders who are under contract' is believed to be aimed at Honda, which could be Martin's destination if he is released early from his current contract.
Honda has no intention of making any move until Martin resolves his ongoing conflict with Aprilia and is officially free, while Aprilia boss Massimo Rivola held a meeting with Hikaru Tsukamoto, his Honda counterpart, at Le Mans.
The situation is remarkable following Martin's switch to Aprilia as reigning MotoGP world champion after winning the title last year with Pramac Ducati.

Two pre-season injuries sidelined Martin from the first three rounds in Thailand, Argentina and Austin, and he returned in Qatar, still not fully recovered, only to suffer a serious injury that resulted in nearly two weeks of hospital treatment in Doha due to a pneumothorax.
While a return to action date hasn't been set yet, it seems unlikely he will be fit to return before the German GP, the 11th round, scheduled for 11-13 July.

Ajax hires Liverpool assistant John Heitinga as new head coach
AMSTERDAM (AP) — Ajax hired John Heitinga as head coach on Saturday to replace Francesco Farioli nearly two weeks after the Italian resigned following the team's late-season collapse. Heitinga, who had a spell as Ajax's interim manager in 2023, spent the past season as an assistant coach to Arne Slot at Liverpool, which won the Premier League title. The 41-year-old former Ajax center-back came through the Dutch club's youth program and made more than 150 appearances for the team. He also played 4 1/2 seasons at Everton. The former Dutch international takes over a team that finished second to PSV Eindhoven after squandering a nine-point lead in the Eredivisie title race. 'I am incredibly excited to start,' said Heitinga, who was an assistant at West Ham two seasons ago. 'The last years in England have done me a lot of good. I've been able to develop further alongside David Moyes and Arne Slot, while also getting a behind-the-scenes look at two major clubs.' ___

Ruthless Sinner marches into French Open fourth round
Top seed Jannik Sinner dismissed world number 34 Jiri Lehecka in straight sets on Saturday at Roland Garros as the Italian booked his place in the fourth round. Sinner delivered a dominant display of power-hitting as the first-ranked men's player beat his opponent 6-0, 6-1, 6-2. Advertisement "Today I was playing really, really well, especially during (the first) two-and-a-half sets... so very happy," said Sinner, who dedicated the victory to his coach Simone Vagnozzi whose birthday it was Friday. The 23-year-old will next meet 17th seed Andrey Rublev in the last 16 after the Russian was given a bye through the third round following Frenchman Arthur Fils' withdrawal due to injury. Sinner is yet to drop a set in the French Open this year as he continues his impressive return to action following a three-month doping suspension. He returned in time for the Italian Open earlier in May, eventually losing the final to Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets, after confidently navigating his way through the first five matches. Advertisement Sinner has now racked up four sets without conceding a game since his comeback in Rome. And on Saturday he won the first 11 games in a row against Lehecka before the Czech got on the scoreboard to make it 5-1 in the second set. The three-time Grand Slam champion hammered 31 winners on his way to victory on Court Suzanne Lenglen and only faced one break point, which he saved. nf/ea
