Aprilia stands firm over Jorge Martin contract saga

Yahoo22-05-2025
Aprilia has stood firm over Jorge Martin's push to be released from his contract early and expects the defending MotoGP world champion to remain at the team at least until the end of 2026, it has said in a statement.
The Italian manufacturer has remained silent on the matter since Motorsport.com exclusively revealed Martin intended to invoke a clause in his contract to be released from the second year of his deal for 2026, allowing him to leave at the end of the season.

The agreement signed by Aprilia and Martin last year at the Italian GP is set to hold no binding effect for the second season. Motorsport.com understands that in the version accepted by Aprilia, Martin's representatives included a clause granting him full freedom to accept offers from other teams if he was not among the title contenders after last Sunday's French GP at Le Mans.

'Aprilia Racing denies that any negotiations have taken place between the parties to modify the duration of the contract, which remains as originally agreed upon. The team has no comment on matters that do not directly concern it but expects other teams to refrain from making any kind of offer to riders who are under contract. Such behaviour would, in any case, not be legitimate.

'The entire Team will continue to support Jorge throughout his recovery process, as it always has, and looks forward to seeing him back on track with the RS-GP.'
Aprilia's comment on it 'expect[ing] other teams to refrain from making any kind of offer to riders who are under contract' is believed to be aimed at Honda, which could be Martin's destination if he is released early from his current contract.
Honda has no intention of making any move until Martin resolves his ongoing conflict with Aprilia and is officially free, while Aprilia boss Massimo Rivola held a meeting with Hikaru Tsukamoto, his Honda counterpart, at Le Mans.
The situation is remarkable following Martin's switch to Aprilia as reigning MotoGP world champion after winning the title last year with Pramac Ducati.

Two pre-season injuries sidelined Martin from the first three rounds in Thailand, Argentina and Austin, and he returned in Qatar, still not fully recovered, only to suffer a serious injury that resulted in nearly two weeks of hospital treatment in Doha due to a pneumothorax.
While a return to action date hasn't been set yet, it seems unlikely he will be fit to return before the German GP, the 11th round, scheduled for 11-13 July.

Emotional Kimi Antonelli Opens Up About Confidence Struggles At Belgian GP

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli looked crushed after a disappointing Belgium Grand Prix Qualifying. Antonelli finished 20th in sprint qualifying due to spinning out of control after pushing too hard on his final lap of SQ1. He finished in 17th place for the sprint race, gaining a few places, but was unable to capture any points. Then, in qualifying for the grand prix, Antonelli finished in P18, a much lower position than the car merits. During the media session after the race, Antonelli appeared emotional following another performance. "Yeah, I mean, since the European [leg of the] season, I've been struggling to find confidence with the car, and I feel like I've done a backward step," the Italian driver said. "It's a difficult moment for me because I feel like I have no confidence on pushing. Yesterday I tried to push a bit too much, and then I spun, and then it kind of hurts the confidence even more. "But it's a difficult period, I think. We know the limitation we have since quite a lot, but with the way I'm driving, I'm just increasing the problem. And that gives me even less confidence with the car." He was only about three-tenths away after Q1, making his performance not a complete disaster, but it is a far cry from the impressive pace that he has shown over the first handful of races. During the North American swing, he scored a sprint race win at Miami and his first podium finish in Canada. Since then, it has been downhill for the driver, who voiced his concerns about the changes to his driving style as the car evolved. "Well, the team has been trying to help me as much as possible," he added. "But on my side I'm probably trying to change the way I'm driving too much. And it feels like I'm not driving naturally. It's very forced the way I'm driving and it's just difficult." The Italian will start from the pit lane as the team makes adjustments to the car, depending on the weather conditions, which are expected to bring rain to the track throughout the race. Manchester United Are Eyeing A Move For This Serie A Winger: Decent Choice For Amorim?

In a recent post on X, journalist Sebastien Vidal claimed that Manchester United are eyeing a move for Bologna winger Dan Ndoye this summer. It is believed that the Red Devils are preparing to launch a €40m offer to land the Swiss wide player this off-season. Ndoye's Impressive Form In Serie A Ndoye had a productive campaign at the Italian club as he put in a string of impressive displays on the right side of their attack. The Swiss talent participated in 41 matches for Bologna last season, scoring nine times and earning six assists on all fronts. The Nyon-born wing wizard managed to shine at times on the right flank and did well to average 2.1 shots per 90 minutes in Serie A. He kept 34% of his attempts on target. However, Ndoye needs to improve his ball distribution in the final third after making 73.7% of his attempted passes in the Italian top tier (stats via His current contract at the Italian club will run out in the summer of 2027. Therefore, Man United would have to make a good offer if they want to lure Ndoye to Old Trafford in this transfer window. (Photo by) Is Ndoye A Decent Choice For Manchester United? Ndoye is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few driving runs with it out in the wide areas. He can strike the ball with power from long range and has got the eye to play some decisive passes on the offensive end of the field. The Swiss talent can chip in by scoring and creating his fair share of goals up top. However, he needs to find a way to improve his link-up play in the opponent's half. Furthermore, it remains to be seen whether the gifted wide player can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League if the Red Devils manage to bring him on board this summer. We can expect Ndoye to add more firepower to Man United boss Ruben Amorim's midfield. He is good enough to help the Mancunian club compete for a European place in the Premier League next season. At 24, Ndoye has his best years ahead of him which makes him an excellent choice for the Red Devils to pursue in this transfer period.

Jordan and Browne take Friday Armoy road race wins

Paul Jordan and Mike Browne took victories in Friday evening's opening two events at the Armoy road races. Northern Ireland rider Jordan overhauled early leader Michael Sweeney to win the seven-lap Supertwins race one by 5.5 seconds from the Republic of Ireland competitor, with both of the top two riding Aprilia machines. Sweeney had led during the early part of the race but Jordan made his move on the approach to Armoy village on lap three and extended his advantage at the front with the help of a new class lap record of 100.694mph on his fourth lap, eclipsing Jamie Coward's one-year-old benchmark. For Jordan, who was also a Twins race winner at the North West 200 in May, it was a second victory of his career at the Armoy meeting, the Magherafelt man having previously been successful in a Supersport outing back in 2018. Joe Yeardsley overtook Barry Furber on the final circuit to claim the final podium spot as Joey Thompson and Marcus Simpson completed the top six. Browne repeated his triumph in last year's Supersport race one by taking a dominant win in this year's equivalent. Riding his BPE by Russell Racing Yamaha, the Cork rider consolidated his position at the front throughout and had 6.4 seconds to spare over runner-up Sweeney at the chequered flag. Third-placed finisher, Jackson Racing pilot Jordan, was a similar margin behind Sweeney as he finished in third position, with Conor Cummins taking fourth place on the Burrows Engineering/RK Racing Ducati. Coward and event newcomer and former BSB rider Franco Bourne rounded out the top six. Browne produced the fastest lap of the race at 104.074mph on his fifth circuit as he collected his fifth Armoy race win to add to his three Moto3 victories and that 2024 Supersport success. Earlier in the day, Jordan topped qualifying for Saturday's Open and 'Race of Legends' events by recording a lap speed of 106.324mph on his Jackson Honda. Browne was second quickest on another Honda at 106.087, followed by Manxman Cummins on a BMW with 105.249. Browne was fastest in Supersport qualifying on 102.018, while Jordan headed the Supertwin session with 100.577. Twelve further races are scheduled to take place on Saturday, with roads closing around the three-mile circuit at 09:00 BST. Saturday's racing will be streamed live on BBC iPlayer and worldwide on the BBC Sport website.
