Bengal police verify 750 migrant workers detained across states
"Once informed of a detention, we confirm it with the state concerned. However, in most cases, the SP or state police headquarters do not respond. So, we are contacting district magistrates. Once confirmation of detention arrives, we ask local police to visit the residences and local panchayat offices of the detained workers," said a source at Bhawani Bhawan.
As Aadhaar cards are not being accepted by the local cops, police here are collecting alternate documents to prove the citizenship of the detainees, said a source.
"While a birth certificate is the most useful document, we are also collecting land deeds, details of voter cards of their parents (or grandparents), and sending them back to the local police through the DM office of that state concerned. Several days are being wasted going through these multiple channels.
Requests to inform us in case of detentions are also being ignored. While dealing with the Rajasthan Police was comparatively easy, both the Mumbai and Delhi Police were almost inaccessible.
Odisha Police carried out the largest number of detentions at multiple centres," said the source. A special cell is also being set up for the verification process, the source added.

Cops cited the example of Ajimuddin Sheikh (22), a mason from Birbhum who was detained in Odisha. "When we showed them our voter ID cards and Aadhaar cards, the police there said they were not genuine. They wanted birth certificates and school documents. They even seized our phones and checked for phone numbers from Bangladesh," claimed Sheikh.

847 kg of ganja worth ₹4.2 crore seized in Telangana; 2 held
Hyderabad, The Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement on Tuesday said it has dismantled a major interstate ganja trafficking network, seizing 847 kilograms of high-grade ganja valued at over ₹4.2 crore in the illicit market and arrested two habitual offenders from Odisha. 847 kg of ganja worth ₹ 4.2 crore seized in Telangana; 2 held The operation is one of the largest and most precise anti-drug actions of 2025, targeting a supply corridor running from Malkangiri to Uttar Pradesh via Telangana and Karnataka, Superintendent of Police Ch Rupesh said. Based on credible intelligence, teams intercepted a pick-up vehicle near Shamshabad road near here on August 4 and seized 847 kg of ganja from the vehicle, and arrested the two persons Khilla Dhana and Rajendar B. According to an official release, Ramesh Sukri operated as the central coordinator from Malkangiri, linked to both arrested accused through their village network. His associate, Jagadish Kuldeep, procured bulk ganja from cultivators like Shibo and Basu in remote forest areas, they said. Ten days ago, the syndicate's primary buyer, Shaffiq from Uttar Pradesh, personally handed over the pick-up vehicle to Ramesh, instructing that it be loaded with 800 kg of ganja and delivered to UP by handing over at Shamshabad, it said. The syndicate's method was precise: ganja was first moved in small loads from fields to safe village outskirts, then repacked in bags containing brown-tape-wrapped packets to mask odour. Drivers used Bengaluru National Highway and Outer Ring Road bypasses to avoid checkpoints and handovers were arranged at city outskirts to minimise exposure, the release said. Communication was restricted to basic feature phones with fresh SIMs, discarded after trips. For security, Khilla carried a sword hidden among the bags. This system had allowed the syndicate to complete multiple large deliveries without interception - until the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement's action ended their run, it said. This action has crippled a major ganja supply route to North India, the release said, adding efforts are underway to nab the absconding accused. Financial investigation and property attachment proceedings will be initiated under the NDPS Act and BNSS, it said. Shanta Paul case: Kolkata police arrest man for helping Bangladeshi actress with fake documents
The Kolkata police have made another arrest in connection with the ongoing investigation into Bangladeshi model and actress Shanta Paul, who was recently arrested for allegedly possessing forged Indian identity documents. The accused, identified as Soumik Dutta, 36, from Naihati in North 24 Parganas district, was arrested on Tuesday by the Anti-Rowdy Squad from his residence for his alleged role in helping Paul create the fake documents. Paul, 28, was arrested by the Lalbazar Detective Department after being found with two fake Aadhaar cards and a ration card. The police are now checking if she used these forged documents to secure a bank loan. According to sources, the police are looking into her financial transactions, particularly in light of her social media posts where she had mentioned plans to open an eatery. Paul, who has nearly 41,000 followers on Facebook, is a model and actress. The investigation has also extended to her social media presence, where officials are examining her travel vlogs that allegedly contain advice to other Bangladeshi nationals on how to enter and reside in India using medical visas. The police are investigating whether Paul influenced or assisted others in similar fraudulent activities. The investigation has also revealed that Paul used a rented Kolkata address to obtain a ration card, which was then used to create the fake Aadhaar cards. One of the fraudulent Aadhaar cards listed an address in Purba Bardhaman district, while the other had a Kolkata address. According to sources, investigators suspect that creating a false Indian identity was part of a broader plan to facilitate international travel, as she was reportedly unable to travel to certain countries from Bangladesh. Details have also emerged about Paul's travel history, including a visit to Nathula Pass near the China border in Sikkim. The police are also checking her social media page, 'Asan Travels Kolkata and Bangladesh', to determine the scope of her alleged travel business. Paul is still in police custody as officials verify the seized documents and uncover the full extent of her alleged crimes. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express.
