Mohe instructs universities to assess SST expansion's impact on students amid concerns of rising costs

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir said the objective of the study is to determine whether the SST expansion, which came into effect on July 1, has directly or indirectly contributed to higher learning costs.
Advertisement 'We will examine in detail what is meant by the alleged increase in costs. What has been announced by the government relates to higher fees for international students coming to study in Malaysia due to increased tariffs or taxes on their education,' he said. 'We've already communicated this matter and gathered feedback. However, there may be other elements, either directly or indirectly, affecting local students as well,' said Zambry, who is also Barisan Nasional secretary-general and Umno Supreme Council member, to reporters after officiating the Umno Merbok Division meeting here today. Expanding on the matter, Zambry said the study would cover all aspects related to student learning, including utility costs such as electricity for those living in rental housing. Previously, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Student Representative Council president Mohamad Amar Aidid Mohd Zain was reported as saying that the expanded scope of SST, effective since Tuesday, was believed to have financial implications for students. According to Mohamad Amar Aidid, the inclusion of digital subscriptions, electronic repairs, laundry services and online purchases under the SST has had a direct impact on students' cost of living. Meanwhile, Zambry said the Malaysian Higher Education Blueprint 2025–2035, developed by the ministry, has been finalised and is expected to be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim this November. Moscow has been slowly grinding its way through Ukrainian lines along several parts of the frontline this summer, throwing forth continuous waves of infantry as it seeks to press home its advantage in men and munitions. Russian forces have already pushed into northern Ukraine's Sumy region over the past months, carving out a small foothold there. "I dedicated two days to working with units in Kharkiv region," Syrskyi wrote in a post on the Telegram app. He said he spent the time talking to commanders, studying the situation in the area and the needs of troops there. "The Russians are looking to press with numbers, but we have to be ready, use appropriate tactical and technological solutions not to allow the (Russians) to move forward," Syrskyi said. Anwar, Zahid convey condolences to Hamzah Zainudin over father-in-law's passing
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has conveyed his condolences to Perikatan Nasional (PN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin on the passing of his father-in-law, Datuk Abdul Ghani Ngah. In a Facebook post Saturday (July 5), the Prime Minister also prayed for Hamzah's family to be granted strength and patience in facing this difficult time. "I pray for Hamzah and his family, that they are granted strength in facing this difficult test. May the soul of the deceased be forgiven of all sins and placed among the righteous, insya-Allah," said the Prime Minister. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also extended his condolences to Hamzah following the passing of his father-in-law. Ahmad Zahid, in a Facebook post, also prayed for the family to be granted strength and perseverance during this difficult time. "This is indeed a very challenging test for the family and a great loss to all who knew him," he said. "Let us all recite Al-Fatihah for the late Datuk Abdul Ghani Ngah, who was also the father-in-law of Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, and pray that his soul is blessed, forgiven of all sins, and placed among the righteous," he said. Abdul Ghani passed away at 1.45pm Saturday. It is understood that Abdul Ghani, 83, had been receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital following complications and breathing difficulties after his house caught fire on June 19. He will be laid to rest on Saturday night at the Kampung Rapat Jaya Muslim Cemetery, Ipoh, Perak. - Bernama
