Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Abdul Halim Mohammad and Brenda Anellia Larry had a successful outing at the Internationale Deutsche Meisterschaften Para Swimming 2025 held in Berlin, Germany over the weekend. Abdul Halim succeeded in setting two Asian records in the SB8 category as well as winning a bronze medal. He recorded a time of 32.91 seconds (s) in the men's 50-metre (m) breaststroke to rewrite his own record of 34.72s set at the World Series 1 in Melbourne, Australia on February 15 this year, while the bronze came in the men's 50m freestyle with a record time of 27.18s achieved in the final. Brenda on the other hand, managed to set two personal best times of 1:06.64s in the S4 women's 50m breaststroke and 1:00.76s in the 50m freestyle. She also met the minimum entry time in the 50m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke to qualify for the Toyota World Para Swimming Championship in Singapore this September. As a result she will be taking part in a total of five events following earlier qualification in the 150m individual medley, 200m freestyle and 50m backstroke, while Abd Halim confirmed his slots in the 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke. Coach Eva Wong, who accompanied them to the meet, was pleased with their performance and achievement. 'Brenda has improved a lot since she finished her STPM. I am very happy to see their commitment and hard work. 'I am also looking forward to their future performance and hope they can live up to their potential as we prepare for the 2028 Summer Paralympics in Los Angeles,' she said on Tuesday. Meanwhile, shuttler Mohd Amin Burhanuddin captured the SL4 men's singles title at the Asian Para Championships in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand at the weekend. The 32-year-old, who hails from Labuan, defeated India's Surya Kant Yadav 23-21, 21-15 in the final to take home the gold medal. CAFA Nations Cup Platform To Sharpen Harimau Malaya's 'Big Match Mentality'
KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 (Bernama) – Malaysia's participation in the 2025 Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup in Uzbekistan this August is seen as an opportunity to sharpen the Harimau Malaya squad's 'big match mentality'. Local football expert and analyst Assoc Prof Dr Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin said the participation is not merely an invitation, but a high-level competitive arena that will comprehensively test the Harimau Malaya's (national team's) physical endurance and mental resilience. The former Head of Sports Science and Performance Analyst of Sabah FC said the challenges awaiting national head coach Peter Cklamovski's men are real and complex, with two Asian giants – Iran and Uzbekistan – having already qualified for the 2026 World Cup. bootstrap slideshow 'Realistically, the performance gap between Malaysia and these opponents lies not only in the technical aspects of the game but also, more deeply, in the psychological dimension – the ability to perform fearlessly in high-profile matches. 'Teams like Iran operate with a 'high pressing and fast recovery' approach, which not only tests physical endurance but also the cognitive ability of players to make decisions in very limited time and space. 'Uzbekistan, on the other hand, are known for their clear tactical structure and speed in combination play – a form of threat that cannot be neutralised without peak cardiovascular fitness and dynamic tactical literacy,' he said.

Sabah Karate Association return with five golds, four bronzes

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) finished seventh at the 24th Milo Open Karate Championship 2025 which concluded in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. Despite being represented by only 10 athletes, they managed to win five gold and four bronze medals in the competition. The gold medals were captured by Nur Radhiah Fathiah Razimi (female junior kumite 16-17, -48kg), Danish Rayyan Rajis (cadet male kata and male individual cadet kumite 14-15, -57kg), Ivy Catrinaz Zurizal (individual female kumite 12-13) and Al Zovainz Zurizal (male individual cadet 14-15, -63kg). The bronzes were delivered by Putri Izz Dini Imtiaz Ali (girls kumite 8-9, +25kg G1), Abra Eiiyah Isabelle Mohd Asmawi (girls kumite 8-9, +25kg G2), Nur Shaheen Izazi Imtiaz Ali (female individual kata junior 16-17 G1) and Harris Qusyairi Helmy (individual male kata 12-13). SKA dominated the event last year by taking home the overall title with 17 golds, nine silvers and 27 bronzes as well as topping the non-sanction medal tally with 16 golds, 12 silvers and 12 bronzes. Secretary general Julian Chin congratulated the team led by coach Frederick Farlin with Abd Rahim Mohd Asmawi as team official.
