Criminals who shot dead three cops well-trained, says Masemola

TimesLIVE2 days ago
National police commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola says the shooters responsible for killing three police officers in two separate incidents over the weekend were clearly well trained in handling firearms.
'In both instances, you can see that the criminals are well-trained in the use of firearms because they shot in the head. Even [in the incident of] Sgt Lawrence Mtsweni, they shot him in the head.
'You can just imagine shooting in the head in darkness and finding where the head is ... this shows we are dealing with somebody who knows what he's doing,' said Masemola.
'So, members of SAPS going out there looking for them, be careful and know what you are dealing with. Let's not get discouraged, let's go out then and hunt them [criminals] and show them we are in charge,' said Masemola.
He was speaking during a visit to Mtsweni's family in Mpumalanga on Sunday.
Mtsweni was among a group of police officers who were responding to a business robbery at Usave shopping centre at Schoemansdal when he was shot on Saturday morning.
On Friday, WO Vuyisile Sintwa, 51, a detective attached to the Johannesburg trio task team and Sgt Simon Masenye, 45, died after being shot, allegedly by Zimbabwean national Thabang Moyo. At the time of the murder, they were transporting him from the Roodepoort magistrate's court.
According to police, in the past financial year, 27 officers died in the line of duty.
Since April, six more officers have been killed in criminal attacks and ambushes. One suspect has been arrested for Mtsweni's murder.
Masemola said this was not the time for the men in blue to cry but rather to deal with 'these criminals decisively so'.
Mtsweni's son, Nkosinenhlanhla Mtsweni, said he was a loving and funny father.
'The last time I saw and spoke to my father was when he asked me to polish his boots. It's hurting for all of us as a family. My father was a loving person who also made sure we were happy, and he was really funny to us as his children,' the heartbroken Nkosinenhlanhla said.
Police unions have condemned the recent deadly attacks on officers, saying if the same officers who risk their lives to protect citizens are not safe, then the fight against crime is severely compromised.
The loss of three officers since Friday is not just a statistic, it is a reflection of the dangerous conditions under which our members operate daily and it leaves lasting scars on their families, colleagues and society at large
Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union spokesperson Richard Mamabolo
Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union spokesperson Richard Mamabolo said the ongoing killing of police officers was a deeply concerning and painful reality for the union.
'The loss of three officers since Friday is not just a statistic, it is a reflection of the dangerous conditions under which our members operate daily and it leaves lasting scars on their families, colleagues and society at large,' said Mamabolo.
SA Police Union national spokesperson Lesiba Thobakgale said there was 'no political will' to declare police killings treason.
'Police officers are representing the state, and the state must take measures to protect the protectors, as an attack on police or law enforcement officers is an attack on the state.'

Campaign raises R44k for Mkhwanazi, but it won't go to the commissioner

BackaBuddy has, however, not yet released the funds. The funds raised on behalf of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will be donated to a trust of the South African Police Service (Saps). This is according to national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe. A BackaBuddy campaign was launched by social media users last month to raise money for Mkhwanazi to buy two cows as a gesture of gratitude following a widely publicised media briefing held last month by Mkhwanazi. The campaign exceeded its R35 000 target, raising R44 000 in total. Money raised for Mkhwanazi to be donated On Tuesday, Mathe clarified that the funds will not go directly to Mkhwanazi. 'Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi thanks everyone for their support and contributions. He has, in addition, requested that all donations be made to the South African Police Service Education Trust Fund. 'SAPSET takes care of the educational needs of children whose parents died in the line of duty,' Mathe said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. Public service employees are prohibited, in the course of their official duties, from accepting gifts, donations, rewards – whether in cash or in kind – or any other benefits, as such offers may be construed as bribes. ALSO READ: Parties question ANC MP's election in Mkhwanazi ad hoc committee, logistics concerns raised Mathe added that Mkhwanazi's office is awaiting approval from the office of national police commissioner Fannie Masemola to allow funds to be deposited into the trust's account. 'Once the approval has been granted, the money will be used to pay for fees, books and uniforms for children whose mothers and fathers died on duty.' BackaBuddy confirmed it has not yet released the funds, citing the need for formal consent. 'To protect the beneficiary and donors, we release funds only once verification is complete – including a consent letter from the verified beneficiary. 'We're trying to reach out to them directly. As soon as documents are confirmed, we'll pay out,' the non-profit company said. To protect the beneficiary and donors, we release funds only once verification is complete — including a consent letter from the verified beneficiary. We're also trying to reaching out to them directly. As soon as documents are confirmed, we'll pay out. @ChrisExcel102 please… — BackaBuddy NPC (@backabuddy) August 12, 2025 Police corruption allegations Mkhwanazi drew national attention when he publicly accused Police minister Senzo Mchunu during a press briefing on 6 July. He claimed that Mchunu sought to dismantle the police's political killings task team based in KZN, allegedly to shield individuals linked to politically connected crime syndicates. The provincial commissioner also alleged that a drug cartel based in Gauteng was influencing a high-level criminal syndicate with reach into Saps, the judiciary, and other law enforcement bodies. Mchunu has since been placed on special leave pending the outcome of a judicial commission of inquiry, led by former Constitutional Court (ConCourt) Judge Mbuyiseli Madlanga. The commission will deliver a preliminary report in three months and a final report within six months. In addition, Parliament has established an ad hoc committee to investigate Mkhwanazi's claims, with a 90-day deadline to conclude its work. Suspected cop killers in gun battle with police

Suspected criminals, it seems, have become more brazen in South Africa wanting to engage in gun battles with police. A shoot-out between police and two suspected criminals in Inanda late last night (12 August) points to this. Police were following up on leads that two suspects, linked to the murder of a police officer, attempted murder, a chain of house robberies and armed robberies, when they (police) came under fire. Colonel Robert Netshiunda, SAPS police spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal said: 'When police arrived at the house [in Maplazini area] they introduced themselves as police officers and instructed the suspects to open the door. 'The suspects responded with gunshots towards police officers from inside the house and police were left with choice but to return fire in self-defence.' In the ensuing gunfight police managed to take control of the situation leading to the fatal shooting of the two suspects. According to Netshiunda the suspects aged 20 and 21 years old sustained fatal wounds. Police officers were not injured during the gun battle. They recovered what might possibly be a stolen firearm from the suspects. The serial number on the gun was filed off. Another brazen gun battle occurred between police and four suspected criminals during a foiled house robbery in Pinetown yesterday (12 August). Police responded to a house robbery in Paradise Valley, Pinetown only to be shot at by the robbers. This is how it played out according to Netshiunda. When police approached the house on Oxford Road, they noticed a suspicious looking VW Polo moving away from the scene. Attempts by police to stop the vehicle were ignored by the driver. 'The driver of the vehicle ignored police instruction's and sped off. A high speed chase ensued and on Underwood Road, the suspects opened fire towards police officers. Police returned fire and a shoot-out ensued,' said Netshiunda. The suspects were wounded during the shoot-out and three were admitted to hospital under police guard. The fourth suspect evaded police and is on the run. The three injured suspects are expected to appear in court when they are 'fit to do so'. In a SAPS Facebook post four days ago, Acting Police Minister, Professor Firoz Cachalia reacted to the dangers police face while undertaking their duty. This, following the deaths of police officers who were ambushed while transporting awaiting trial prisoner, Jabulani Moyo. 'Their [police] sacrifice in the line of duty is a stark reminder of the daily dangers faced by our police officers as they work to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety of all South Africans. We owe them — and every officer who puts on the blue uniform — a debt of gratitude that words alone cannot fully express,' said Cachalia. Crowdfunded gift for Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi redirected to SAPS Education Trust

Supporters donated over R44,000 via a BackaBuddy campaign originally intended to 'buy two cows' for Mkhwanazi as a symbol of gratitude. The funds will now be redirected to support the children of fallen officers. Image: Doctor Ngcobo / Independent Newspapers The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that funds raised in a BackaBuddy campaign to 'buy two cows' for KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will be donated to the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET), pending official approval. The crowdfunding campaign was launched by social media users last month as a gesture of appreciation for Mkhwanazi. The campaign exceeded its initial target of R35,000, raising a total of R44,074. It followed Mkhwanazi's explosive allegations of political interference and the shielding of criminals within SAPS. According to Mkhwanazi, senior police officials, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu who is currently on a special leave - interfered in politically sensitive investigations and orchestrated the disbanding of elite anti-corruption units. He accused Lt-Gen Shadrack Sibiya, deputy national commissioner for crime detection (currently on leave), of colluding with North West information dealer Brown Mogotsi and Mchunu to dismantle the KZN political killings task team. The unit was disbanded in March 2025, effectively suspending 121 active dockets, many of which were linked to politically motivated killings. Mkhwanazi presented WhatsApp messages, SAPS documents and cellphone records to support his claims. Video Player is loading. Following the revelations, President Cyril Ramaphosa placed Mchunu on special leave and established a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the allegations. Professor Firoz Cachalia has since been appointed as acting Police Minister. The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster confirmed that Mkhwanazi is awaiting formal approval from the office of the National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola to have the donated funds transferred to SAPSET. 'The Office of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, is awaiting approval from the Office of the National Commissioner to allow donated BackaBuddy funds, raised through a donation campaign by prominent X app accounts, to be deposited into the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) account, as per the directive of the Provincial Commissioner,' the JCPS Cluster said in a statement. Once approved, the funds will be used to support the educational needs of children of police officers who died in the line of duty. 'Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi extends his sincere gratitude to everyone for their generous support and contributions,' the statement continued SAPS national spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe confirmed the same. 'Once the approval has been granted, the money will be used to pay for fees, books and uniforms of children whose mothers and fathers died on duty,' Mathe wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The SAPSET, which was established in 2010 has assisted more than 1,000 bereaved children with their education.
