Predicting a 16-player practice squad for Broncos

USA Todaya day ago
Once they set a 53-man roster next week, the Denver Broncos can begin building a practice squad after cut players clear waivers. The NFL has a 16-player limit for the practice squad, but there's an exception for a potential designated international player taking a 17th spot.
Broncos punter Jeremy Crawshaw (an Australian) has received an offseason roster exemption as the team's designated international player this summer, but he's a lock to make the active roster. Denver doesn't have an obvious international candidate for an extra 17th practice squad player, but the team might target an international player from another club after roster cuts.
So our practice squad prediction for the Broncos features 16 players. One player who is not on the list is fullback Michael Burton, who began last season on Denver's practice squad. Burton is currently dealing with a hamstring injury and it's uncertain how the team will handle his early-season roster status after adding fullback Adam Prentice.
Broncos projected practice squad
Denver will set a 53-man roster on Tuesday, Aug. 26. Then, after waiver claims go through on Wednesday, Aug. 27, clubs will begin building practice squads. We will track all of the team's moves on Broncos Wire.

There's only one Big Ten team Tom Izzo believes is a cut above MSU entering next season

In the eyes of Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo, there's only one team in the Big Ten he considers a cut above his Spartans right now. Izzo was a guest on Jon Rothstein's podcast Inside College Basketball Now this week, where he answered a number critical questions. One of those was assessing his team and where it stacks up with the rest of the league -- which Izzo apparently feels pretty good about. Izzo said he feels his team has as good of a returning nucleus as anyone else in the Big Ten, except for the Purdue Boilermakers -- who he believes are a cut above the rest of the league. "We got our main stays," Izzo said during the interview. "Coen Carr has gotten a lot better, Jeremy Fears, Carson Cooper has really made some progress, and Jaxon Kohler, and that's four really good main stays that have played a lot of minutes here. Now it's about adding in the guys. Does a Kur Teng -- a shooter that we have -- really improve, does it have to be one of our new guys. I think we more than anybody but Purdue, maybe, we have a base of, I wouldn't say starters back, but top six or seven guys and now two of those guys are seniors." Michigan State won the Big Ten last season by three games and was clearly the best team in the league by the time March rolled around. But the Spartans have lost a number of key contributors from that squad, including top scorers Jase Richardson and Jaden Akins. But regardless of that, Izzo appears to be pretty excited about the team he has in front of him for this next season -- which is great news for us Spartans. Izzo has never been the type to sugarcoat anything and will call it as it is, so to hear him speak this highly of his team for next year is a great sign. Freeman hits 2-run homer in 1st inning, Kershaw wins 4th straight start as Dodgers beat Rockies 9-5

DENVER (AP) — Freddie Freeman hit a two-run home on the sixth pitch of the game, Clayton Kershaw won his fourth straight start, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 9-5 on Thursday. Andy Pages had two hits including a homer as the Dodgers salvaged a split of the four-game series at Coors Field. Alex Freeland had three hits and was a homer short of the cycle, and Freeman and Mookie Betts had two hits apiece. Kershaw (8-2) gave up three runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings, leaving one out short of his fourth consecutive quality start after Brenton Doyle's two-out single in the sixth made it 8-3. Kershaw, who struck out three and walked one, improved to 29-11 against the Rockies, his most victories against any opponent. Doyle had two hits including a homer and four RBIs, and Jordan Beck had two hits for the Rockies, who had won seven of nine. Freeman hit a 451-foot homer on the first pitch of his at-bat after Betts walked to open the game against Chase Dollander (2-10), and the Dodgers scored in each of the first five innings to build an 8-2 lead capped by Pages' homer leading off the fifth. Doyle's two-run homer in the eighth made it 9-5. Dodgers regulars Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar Hernandez had scheduled days off. Ohtani was struck in the right thigh by a comebacker while pitching Wednesday but is expected to play in the San Diego series this weekend, manager Dave Roberts said. Dollander gave up nine hits, five for extra bases, and left after Freeland's double capped a two-run fourth for a 7-1 Dodgers lead. He struck out five and walked two. Key moment Freeman's first inning homer into the shrubbery beyond the center field fence was the tone-setter. Key stat Clayton Kershaw is 5-0 with a 1.72 ERA in his last seven day-game starts dating to 2023. Up next Dodgers LHP Blake Snell (3-1,1.80 ERA) brings a streak of 11 consecutive scoreless innings into a Friday start against Padres RHP Yu Darvish (2-3, 5.97) at San Diego. Rockies RHP Antonio Senzatela (4-14, 7.00 ERA) goes against Pirates RHP Braxton Ashcroft (3-2, 3.02) at Pittsburgh.

The SEC will reportedly implement a 9 game conference schedule, starting in 2026

What was once a rumor has become reality, as Tuesday's breaking news revealed that the SEC will implement a nine-game conference schedule, which will begin during the 2026 season. Again, this was seemingly always in the works, knowing the obvious financial benefits for all 16 conference teams, while making the first two games of the season even more important regarding the College Football Playoff. To start, the SEC will remain divisionless, while each program will now have three permanent rivalries that it will face each season. Furthermore, nine conference games mean each SEC team will face one another at least once every two years, at home and away every four years. Outside of the conference, SEC teams will now be required to schedule one team from the Big 12, Big Ten, or Texas A&M's Week 3 opponent, Notre Dame, every season. This change only enhances the early-season competitiveness, providing the top-tier SEC teams an opportunity to schedule a top program out of three of the four Power conferences, or the Fighting Irish, to beef up their CFP resume. Texas A&M's current three permanent opponents are Texas, LSU, and Missouri, but with an extra conference game, the Aggies will now face Georgia for the first time since the 2019 season, and Kentucky in Lexington for the first time in program history. However, Texas A&M's new permanent opponents will change, and right now, I'll guess that Texas, LSU, and either Arkansas or South Carolina will be the top options, with the Longhorns and Tigers being the undeniable leaders. Looking ahead to the 2026 season, here are Texas A&M's three nonconference games currently scheduled: Sept. 5: Missouri State (1st year in FBS)Sept. 12: Arizona StateNov. 21: Tarleton State (FCS) Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions.
