Pierce Brosnan talks ageing: 'I don't see myself as an old man'

While many of us still think of him as James Bond, Pierce Brosnan is taking on a new case, this time as a pensioner trying to solve a murder in a new Netflix movie. The film is an adaptation of Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club, which focuses on a group of older people in a retirement home who get dragged into a real murder case, and decide who better to solve it than themselves. The Navan native plays Ron Ritchie, a retired union leader, but when chatting to Saga Magazine, he revealed that despite being in his 70s, he doesn't' see himself as an old man. Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, Pierce Brosnan and Celia Imrie in The Thursday Murder Club Pic: Netflix He shared: 'I don't see myself as an old man at all. But I suppose I would be considered an old man by some and I am getting older, that's for sure. So The Thursday Murder Club dealt with all of those intricacies of the heart that are so fragile to look at sometimes.' The film itself highlights a lot of the things people go through as they get older, and some of the more difficult aspects of that. Brosnan added: 'It will bring great comfort to people who are getting old. We don't really look after the elders in our society, they get pushed to the side. It's a story of dignity and hope.' Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, and Pierce Brosnan in The Thursday Murder Club Pic: Giles Keyte/Netflix The Thursday Murder Club was first published in 2020, and spawned a hugely successful murder mystery series that now includes four titles, with the fifth due out this September. The film follows four irrepressible retirees — Elizabeth (Helen Mirren), Ron (Pierce Brosnan), Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley) and Joyce (Celia Imrie) — who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun. When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands. The movie is directed by Chris Columbus and also stars Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Tom Ellis, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Paul Freeman, Geoff Bell, Richard E Grant, and Ingrid Oliver.

Shonda Rhimes says it is 'cute' that Bridgerton has been called 'woke'

US TV producer Shonda Rhimes has responded to her Netflix show Bridgerton being called "woke" and said she does not read opinions online. Rhimes, 55, executive-produced the Regency-style show, created the long running series Grey's Anatomy, and is chief executive of global media company Shondaland. Critics of Bridgerton, including Telegraph columnist Andrew Roberts, have called the series "woke" for its use of actors from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, where she received the event's inaugural fellowship, Rhimes said: "I didn't know anyone described it (the show) as woke. That's so cute. "I learned a really long time ago that I don't read things that are written about the shows. "The reason is… because if you decide to believe the good things that are written about you, you also are obligated to believe the bad things that are written about you. "So I've decided that none of that matters. It's really important to stay out of that, how people react and take in the show is none of my business." Bridgerton is set during Regency-era England and the series includes actors from different ethnic backgrounds. Asked whether she was trying to "shake up" the British period drama with her casting, she said that was not the case, but added: "I'm never going to write a show that doesn't include me. "I just, I find it less interesting when I don't see my own face." Rhimes said when she first read the books, from Julia Quinn, she saw Bridgerton as a "workplace drama" and added that its success has seen it become a "lifestyle brand". She added: "I had a lot of disdain for romance novels… but I read this book, and it was so good that I got out of bed sick, went to the bookstore, bought the rest of the books and came back and read them. "I remember saying to my producing partner, Betsy Beers, 'I've found this thing that's a show', and she thought I had lost my mind. "But I didn't see it as a romance novel. To me, Bridgerton is a workplace drama. The women have no power in any other areas of their lives. "The only place they have power is in who they marry and how they marry, and that marriage is a workplace, and those are colleagues coming together to make sure that their faiths and futures are sealed in a way that is positive for them. "Now I know that's not how you think of it, but that's how I thought of it. "I thought, there's something really amazing in showing this world of women, where, you look at history, and there's all these other stories told. Nobody's talking about this period of time for women." Bridgerton series four will follow the love story between Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson, and Sophie Baek, played by Yerin Ha. It will be released on Netflix in 2026.

Love Is Blind UK chaos as star breaks down in tears after confession

*Warning: Contains spoilers for Love Is Blind UK Season 2* A Love Is Blind UK favourite is seen breaking down in tears, confessing to feeling "sick" after hearing a confession from their partner just weeks before they are supposed to say I do. Love Is Blind UK made its comeback last week on Netflix (August 13), with 30 fresh-faced singles stepping into their "pods" in the quest for true love. However, only five pairs chose to progress their relationship to the engagement stage. Today (August 20), Netflix has dropped the latest batch of episodes, allowing fans to watch as the couples move in together and start planning their nuptials. The couples are Ashleigh and Billy, Bardha and Jed, Megan and Kieran, Sarover and Kal, and Javen and Katisha, but will their emotional bonds hold firm? Billy has some heart-breaking confessions for Ashleigh (Image: Netflix) One particularly popular couple is facing a tough time as a single question appears to derail their blossoming romance. Cabin crew manager Ashleigh and armed forces instructor Billy hit it off immediately in the pods, even declaring their love for each other, reports the Mirror. But during this week's "checking in", Billy confessed a heart-wrenching truth. He told Ashleigh: "I've always been honest to you from the start. I don't want to lead you astray. "Part of me is saying we need to jump in with a little bit of risk. I need to be realist about it and I am torn down the middle." To which Ashleigh responded: "I'm not gonna lie, like I feel really sick, my heart feels like it's in my mouth right now. I wasn't really expecting you to say like it was 50/50. I think it's just a shock." Acknowledging the uncertainties arise from their contrasting careers and daily routines, Ashleigh revealed: "I love you so much and I see a future with us, I see it working with us. I see the first six months being b*****y hard. "I'm willing to try and get as many weekend off as I can with you. I'm ready to settle down, I'm ready to marry, to have a family now and I think we cemented that pretty much in the pods." Billy admitted he had dated cabin crew before (Image: Netflix) Yet Billy's reservations persisted as he subsequently questioned: "Are you just going to jump into this regardless then because it could be a no from you as well?". Ashleigh replied: "I'm so yes right now Billy, I'm so yes. I know we've got more of the experiment to live and breathe, I flipping love you. I want to do this." Becoming emotional, the flight attendant revealed her "chest hurts" as she confided to cameras: "I'm ready to be good enough for Billy, I thought I was good enough for billy and it frustrates me my job again is getting in the way." This follows the pair declaring their feelings and introducing each other to their families. Yet this week, viewers witnessed the duo seemingly torn over particular elements of their lives, including their careers and dietary requirements. Will Ashleigh and Billy reach the ceremony and exchange vows? Viewers must wait until August 27 to discover the outcome. Love Is Blind UK Season 2 is streaming on Netflix now.
