Language matters a lot, Mr Modi
The new three-language policy was scrapped by the Devendra Fadnavis government because the pushback from the people of Maharashtra was so strong. This, in effect, means that learning Hindi is now not compulsory in the primarily Marathi-speaking State. Learning a third language stipulated in the new education policy, for all practical purposes, means learning Hindi despite all the obfuscation. The three-language policy is a ploy to introduce Hindi in a subtle manner. Mindful of the fact that language is a highly emotive issue and a political minefield, the central government ought not to have attempted to bring in Hindi through the back door. People are intelligent enough to see through its game. It is a fallacy to say that uniformity is a sine qua non for unity. The worst of it all is that the government is testing the non-Hindi speaking people's love of their mother tongue and culture and their will to resist by imposing Hindi on them and attempting a sort of insidious cultural invasion. Hindi is only one of the many Indian languages and knowing or speaking it is no determinant of one's Indianness. The attempt to substitute English with Hindi as the lingua franca is bound to flounder and fail in the pluralist India with space for all languages, religions, ethnicities and cultures. The Narendra Modi government should change its world view and its language policy.

Only the nameless suffer during stampedes
Stampedes have become a tragic ritual in India. Successive governments, be it the BJP or Congress, follow the same tired script. 'Arrangements were perfect, but the crowd was larger than expected.' Then come the token gestures: suspend a few junior officials, announce compensation, and move on. Religion is now a hyper-commercialised spectacle. Even Lord Jagannath might struggle to make sense of it. Ironically, it's never the VIPs or organizers who suffer—only the nameless, faceless devotees.

Prioritise public safety
No celebration should end in tragedy. The Puri Mahaprabhu Jagannath Rath Yatra stampede, which claimed three lives and injured 50, highlights the need for effective crowd management. This tragic incident was a result of negligence, mismanagement and the alarming absence of police personnel at the time of the stampede. Despite advanced technology, crowd safety remains a concern. Authorities must prioritise public safety and implement strategies to prevent such tragedies, as seen in devastating religious congregation incidents like Hathras (121 lives), Kumbh Mela (36), and other similar incidents. To prevent such incidents, thorough risk assessments and crowd management plans must be put in place. Emergency response teams should be deployed, and communication systems should be established. The government and event organizers must work together to ensure public safety. Ultimately, safety of the people should be the top priority.

Punish officials for stampedes
The gross neglect of security arrangements and administrative supervision over the proceedings has become a common factor when it comes to stampedes and deaths in India! The Puri incident on Sunday is the second major stampede this month with Bengaluru accounting for the first on June 4. Overall, from the six major stampedes this year the officially declared deaths stand at 80, including during the Maha Kumbh mela and at New Delhi railway station. All incidents occurred because of poor security arrangements and lack of proper plans for crowd control/management. Whenever such incidents occur, the concerned state governments announce ex-gratia to the bereaved families and wash their hands off the responsibility for the incident. Additionally, the concerned officials are suspended and/or transferred pending enquiry. What exactly happens afterwards is never made public and even if a report is made from the inquiry, no specific action takes place against the erring officials, or the administration concerned. This decadent system should change once and for all.

India and Pakistan exchange lists of prisoners
India and Pakistan on Tuesday exchanged lists of prisoners in each other's custody, with New Delhi asking Islamabad to expedite the release of 159 Indian nationals who have completed their prison terms and to provide consular access to 26 more prisoners. (PTI) The two countries exchange lists of prisoners and fishermen twice a year, on January 1 and July 1, under provisions of the 2008 Agreement on Consular Access. This is among a limited number of bilateral mechanisms and arrangements that remain operational between the two sides, another being the exchange on January 1 of lists of nuclear installations that cannot be attacked during hostilities. India shared the names of 382 civilian prisoners and 81 fishermen in its custody who are Pakistani or believed to be Pakistani, the external affairs ministry said. The Pakistani side provided a list of 53 civilian prisoners and 193 fishermen in its custody who are Indian or believed to be Indian. The lists were simultaneously exchanged through diplomatic channels in New Delhi and Islamabad, the ministry said. 'The government of India has called for early release and repatriation of civilian prisoners, fishermen along with their boats, and missing Indian defence personnel from Pakistan's custody,' the ministry said. Pakistan was asked to expedite the release and repatriation of 159 Indian fishermen and civilian prisoners who had completed their sentences. Pakistan was also asked to provide immediate consular access to 26 civilian prisoners and fishermen in its custody who are believed to be Indian and have not been provided such access so far, the ministry said. India urged Pakistan to expedite the process of verifying the nationality of 80 civilian prisoners and fishermen in India's custody who are believed to be Pakistani, and whose repatriation has been held up for lack of confirmation of their nationality by Islamabad. 'Pakistan has been requested to ensure the safety, security and welfare of all Indian and believed-to-be-Indian civilian prisoners and fishermen, pending their release and repatriation to India,' it said. The external affairs ministry said efforts by the Indian government have resulted in 2,661 Indian fishermen and 71 civilian prisoners being repatriated from Pakistan since 2014. This includes 500 fishermen and 13 civilian prisoners repatriated since 2023. 'India remains committed to addressing, on priority, all humanitarian matters, including those pertaining to prisoners and fishermen in each other's country. In this context,' the ministry said. India and Pakistan have not had any sustained talks since New Delhi called off the composite dialogue in the aftermath of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which were carried out by a 10-member team of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Following the Pahalgam terror attack in April, India announced a raft of punitive diplomatic and economic measures against Pakistan, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960.

Didn't discuss leadership change with MLAs, MPs in Karnataka: Congress leader Surjewala
AICC general secretary and party's Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala on Tuesday ruled out gathering any opinion on leadership change, remarks that came in the wake of internal bickering in the Congress' state unit over the matter. Surjewala said that he has been meeting the MLAs and MPs to understand the work done by them in their respective constituencies. "Some of you asked me are you taking opinion on leadership change. The answer I had given yesterday also and I am answering again today-- the answer is clearly 'no' in one word," Surjewala said in a press conference. Flanked by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who is also the Karnataka State Congress president, Surjewala said he had a meeting with the party MLAs, MPs, MLCs and party candidates who contested the assembly and Lok Sabha elections. He also said that in the next seven to eight days he would meet all the MLAs. Live Events Explaining the reason, the Congress general secretary said, "We are meeting the MLAs and MPs. We are trying to understand from our MLAs what work they have done in the past two years in their respective constituencies. It's important to review their performance." "If I'm an MLA, I'm obliged to ensure that my accountability to the people and the election promises of the Congress party are fulfilled in my constituency. So, I am asking my MLAs to give their report cards," he added. The MLAs will also be asked about the status of the Block Congress Committee, Assembly Congress Committee and the number of party meetings they held from time to time, the Congress leader said. "We are also asking them (MLAs) what, if any, difficulty or aspiration he or she has. Every MLA has some aspirations or some more work to be done in the constituency," he explained. Stating that it was fine to have aspirations, Surjewala said their ambitions will be conveyed to government and whatever best can be done on a priority basis will be taken up. After the MLAs, the Congress leader said he would meet the ministers to understand what they have done in their respective constituencies. The role of the frontal organisations such as NSUI, Mahila Congress, SC/ST and OBC, Minority, Kisan departments and Youth Congress will be reviewed, he said. Surjewala said it was necessary to see the status of the implementation of the five guarantees. The five guarantees are Rs 3,000 monthly assistance to homemakers, loan waivers up to Rs 3 lakh for farmers, Rs 25 lakh health insurance per family, Rs 4,000 monthly allowance for unemployed youth, and free bus travel for women. On the BJP being critical of the five guarantees, he said, "This is a bogey raised by BJP in Karnataka. They want the guarantees to be shut down." "I reiterate that the BJP leaders from R Ashoka to Vijayendra want the five guarantees to be stopped. They want Rs 58,000 crore not to go to the accounts of Kannadigas in a transparent manner," he alleged. The Congress leader said the five guarantees will never be stopped. On some Congress MLAs' charges that there was no development work happening in their segments, Surjewala said there are sufficient funds with the government in Karnataka. Regarding MLAs giving open statements in public against the government, the Congress leader said, "What we deliberate in the party should remain within the party. I have advised my MLAs also. If they have a problem, instead of raising an issue or a non-issue to settle score, raise it with the head of the family -- In the PCC, there is Shivakumar and in the government there is Siddaramaiah." Congress Karnataka rules out ‘change in leadership' in state amid internal rift buzz
Amid speculation over an internal rift within the Karnataka Congress , AICC general secretary and party's state in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala clarified that he was not gathering any opinion on leadership change.
