Crusaders edge Blues to reach Super Rugby Pacific final
Will Jordan scored two tries as the Canterbury Crusaders recovered from an early deficit to edge reigning champions the Auckland Blues 21-14 to reach a 17th Super Rugby final. In an intense clash at Christchurch Stadium on Friday, the Blues hammered away at the home try line for more than six minutes after the hooter looking for a converted try to force overtime, but came away empty-handed as the Crusaders' defence held firm and kept them on track for a 13th title. A try from Tom Christie set the Crusaders on their way as they fought back from 14-0 down in the 21st minute to guarantee a return to their home fortress next week to face the ACT Brumbies or the Waikato Chiefs. Neither the Chiefs nor Brumbies, who meet in the second semi-final on Saturday, will relish a trip to Christchurch, where the Crusaders are now unbeaten in 31 play-off matches over the three decades of Super Rugby. The Crusaders snuffed out the danger that time, but the visitors soon silenced the crowd when a raking AJ Ram kick resulted in a five-metre scrum and winger Mark Tele'a dived over in the corner for the opening try. The home side were reduced to 14 men when Braydon Ennor was yellow-carded for a dangerous tackle, and centre Rieko Ioane went over under the posts to double the lead with a second try for the Blues. The Crusaders cut the deficit soon after being returned to a full complement when open-side flanker Christie forced his way over from close range after several of his teammates had been repelled. Blues prop Joshua Fusitu'a was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle on All Blacks captain Scott Barrett three minutes later, and the crowd was back to full voice just before the break when Jordan crossed for a converted try to level the scores. The Blues spurned a straight-forward shot at goal from a 51st-minute penalty, before knocking on from the tap and being pinged by the referee at the resultant scrum. The Crusaders then laid siege to the Blues' line, turning down several potential shots at goal in favour of kicks to touch, before Jordan played tight forward to finally force the ball over the line with 10 minutes left. Flyhalf Rivez Reihana slotted his third conversion to take the lead out to 21-14, and the visitors' woes deepened when number eight Hoskins Sotutu was sent to the sin bin minutes later.

The Crusaders will host the Super Rugby final after edging the Blues 21-14 in the first semifinal
CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) — The Christchurch-based Crusaders will host the Super Rugby final for a record eighth time after edging the Blues 21-14 on Friday to end the Blues' one-year title reign. The Crusaders improved their winning record in home playoffs to 31-0 in a thrilling match that ended in the 85th minute. They will now face the winner of Saturday's second semifinal between the Hamilton-based Chiefs and ACT Brumbies as they attempt to win the Super Rugby title for the 13th time. The Crusaders rallied from two tries and a man down after 21 minutes to level the score at 14-14 by halftime. They took the lead for the first and last time with Will Jordan's second try of the match in the 70th minute and held on under immense pressure. The Blues held the ball through 40 phases on the Crusaders' goalline after the fulltime siren, won a penalty and attacked again before backrower Christian Lio-Willie won the turnover that ended the match. 'That was just pride,' Jordan said. 'Some boys must have made 10 or 15 tackles just in that last five or 10 minutes. 'The Blues are a helluva side, champions and showed that tonight. We just managed to hold out.' The Blues opened the scoring with a try to winger Mark Tele'a after 11 minutes. The Crusaders were then reduced to 14 men when center Braydon Ennor was sin-binned after a head clash with Hoskins Sotutu. Blues center Rieko Ioane scored under the posts in the absence of his marker in the 21st minute and Beauden Barrett converted to make the score 14-0. The Crusaders scored through backrower Tom Christie in the 24th minute and when the Blues were down to 14 men with Joshua Fusitua in the sin-bin, scored through Jordan to level the scores. Jordan was outstanding in the aerial contest and dangerous around the field. The Crusaders weathered pressure near their goalline between the 46th and 51st minutes before relieving that pressure with the first of a series of scrum penalties. The Blues were forced to use hooker Ricky Riccitelli at loosehead prop temporarily after exhausting their prop resources. After a series of eight consecutive penalties in the Blues' 22, Jordan scored the match-winning try. The Blues then threw everything at the Crusaders to keep the match and their title defense alive but couldn't score again. 'We started very well but we let them back in and they were good at what they pride themselves on around their set piece,' Blues captain Patrick Tuipulotu said. Advertisement Against the Cardinals, Semien went seven for eight with three walks and a homer. It had been obvious, and Bruce Bochy pointed it out too, Semien's slump was not for lack of trying. It was very clear he was trying, too hard. He was reaching for pitches clearly trying to go the other way, doing almost anything to break the slump. Clearly he got stuck in his head. That is six days of rest, which I understood a few mental days, six days has me wondering if it's potentially something more? Advertisement Overall, I think Garcia has improved on his offense and defense from last season. Granted the offensive numbers don't necessarily show that but he seems to be a little more patient at the plate and seeing pitches just a tad better, trying to go the other way, and striking out a lot less. Obviously his defense has improved tremendously with the amount of highight plays he has made thus far. Corey Seager is once again back from an IL stint and hopefully that hamstring is nice and rested and gives no other issues. The lineup is just much stronger with him Nathan Eovaldi has been moved to the injured list with tricep tightness, which seems to not be a huge concern which is excellent news for a team that is still heavily relying on their starting rotation.
