QRCS continues to support Yemen's water sector

The representation office of Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) in Yemen has completed a project to dig boreholes and construct water tanks in the towns of Lawdar and Mudiyah, Abyan Governorate.
Aimed at securing clean water for 23,200 people, the project had a total cost of $413,115, funded from the giving of benevolent Qatari donors.
It involved digging four boreholes, installing solar-powered pumping systems, constructing four 27 cubic metre concrete water storage tanks, building control rooms to manage and operate borehole components, and extending 3,926-metre water supply networks connecting boreholes and tanks.
During the technical procedures to hand the project's outcomes over to the local communities and competent authorities, Gamal Alala, director-general of Lawdar, expressed his great happiness with the project: 'With generous support from QRCS, we are inaugurating Lawdar water well, Shabiba borehole, and two water tanks. These projects ensure the sustainable provision of water for 10 remote villages that have been underserved for decades, and the population had to suffer a lot to get water'.
Ali Harbaji, director-general of Mudiyah, considered the project a significant development for the two beneficiary localities. 'For many years, these areas have been suffering from water scarcity and inadequate services infrastructure,' he commented. 'We appreciate the efforts of QRCS to support humanitarian and development projects and help rural communities live with dignity. This achievement has put an end to many years of suffering and addressed the needs of more than 3,000 people in five villages'.
In a statement, Eng. Ahmed Hassan Al-Sharaji, head of QRCS's office in Yemen, revealed the volume of relief and development water-related interventions done since 2020: 'There are 352 surface water wells and 21 boreholes dug, rehabilitated, and operated, at a total cost of over $3.5 million (some QR13 million), as part of 10 projects implemented over the past five years'.
He added, 'In coordination with the competent authorities, we managed to provide clean water for 370,581 people, mostly in remote, underserved, and desperate villages across 59 districts in 11 governorates, as follows: Taiz, Dhale, Al-Hudaydah, Raymah, Sa'dah, Al-Jawf, Ibb, Al-Mahwit, Hajjah, Lahij, and Abyan'.
Al-Sharaji highlighted the importance attached to the water sector in QRCS's plans and programs, explaining, 'QRCS's interest in and response to such projects align with its humanitarian priorities, notably easing the water shortage, providing potable water, making it easier to get water, protecting children against falling into open water wells, and preventing the spread of waterborne diseases such as schistosomiasis and cholera'.
'One of the key challenges to the project was the difficult geographical features of several target districts. For example, in Jahaf, Dhale, QRCS's personnel crossed mountainous heights and extremely rugged terrain to construct concrete supports and lay 1,500-metre water supply networks to deliver water to mountainous villages,' he concluded.
According to UN reports, Yemen is one of the world's poorest countries in terms of water resources, with more than half of the 30-million population lacking access to safe water, especially in rural areas and remote communities.

MoEHE to hold 2025-2026 back-to-school activities
Tribune News Network DOHA The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) is preparing to launch its annual 'Back to School' event for the 2025-2026 academic year on August 25 and 26 at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC). The event will be attended by ministry leaders, educational cadres, students, parents, and the public. This event is part of its efforts to create a stimulating educational environment that ensures an effective start to the new academic year. The event's programme includes a series of diverse educational and motivational activities. The Training and Development Center is organising training workshops targeting school leaders, teachers, students, and parents, with the participation of a select group of trainers from inside and outside Qatar, including Dhabia Al Khalifi, Dr Abdul Rahman Al Harami,Wadha AlAdhba, Dr Abdul Nasser Fakhro, Jawaher Al Mana, Ahmed Yousef Al Maliki, Ramzan Rashid Al Naimi, Maryam Al Zubair, Latifa Al Kuwari, and Alaa Al Asfour. The programme also includes organising a 'Teachers' Projects' exhibition, which highlights the outcomes of the 'Innovation Leaders' initiatives and the 'Tamheen' programme. On the sidelines of the event, participating teachers and school leaders will be able to experience the journey of obtaining a professional licence via interactive digital screens. This will be done in light of the updated and enhanced procedures for obtaining the licence, which are considered a fundamental step in the path of professional development and supporting educational competencies. This year's edition features the participation of educational expert Dr Yasser Al Hazimi, who will deliver a lecture to the general public on the first day titled 'Psychological Balance and Quality of Life'. The second day will witness the annual educational meeting, through which the ministry seeks to highlight the most prominent strategic directions for the new academic year. The meeting will include an inspiring and motivational segment presented by Ramzan Al Nuaimi titled 'Innovation: The Path to Survival and Excellence'. The main stage will also host the 'Information Challenge' segment with Mohammed Adnan and Abdullah Al Ghafri, in addition to entertainment shows and public competitions presented by broadcaster Abdullah Al Halabi and the puppet 'Hessa', in addition to segments dedicated to children presented by the Mowasalat Company (Karwa) . This edition also witnesses the participation of a number of distinguished partners who contribute to enriching the attendees' experience. Alef and Al Rawnaq bookstores offer the latest school supplies at special discounts, KidZania offers children the opportunity to explore professions, while Mowasalat (Karwa) provides a virtual reality experience for driving school buses. Corners have been designated for arts, drawing, and handicrafts, in addition to a special corner for people with disabilities, enhancing the comprehensive educational nature of the event. Teachers are present daily from 4pm to 10pm at Galleria Msheireb to provide interactive activities that develop students' skills and renew the pledge to continuous learning. Qatar Foundation welcomes 800 new students with a call to serve
Tribune News Network Doha The value and the benefit of serving society has been illustrated to more than 800 new university students who are now part of Qatar Foundation's unique ecosystem of education – as an annual gathering marking the start of the new academic year encouraged them to embrace the spirit of giving back. The traditional Marhaba event – held at Multaqa (Education City Student Center) – saw students who are embarking on studies in the eight universities at Qatar Foundation (QF) learn about the opportunities that await them over the coming years, and what it means to be a QF student. Speaking to the students, Yousif Al Naama, CEO of Qatar Foundation, said: 'You're taking your first steps on an incredible journey, in a place of learning, discovery, and connection that is unlike anything else anywhere in the world. 'And you're taking those steps in the year that marks the 30th anniversary of QF – three decades of nurturing future leaders and change-makers like you, equipping them to excel in their fields and nurturing them to lead fulfilling lives.' Emphasising the sense of belonging and shared identity that comes from entering the QF ecosystem, he said: 'Wherever you are from, whatever university you are studying at, wherever you hope your path will lead, you are united by the fact you are students of QF. 'You are part of our community, and you are part of our story – a story that we've been writing for 30 years, and that you will now help us write the next chapters of.' Francisco Marmolejo, president of Higher Education and Education Advisor, QF, told the new students: 'Among QF's values are 'integrity' and 'community'. In everything we do, we contribute to the progress of society – in Qatar, across our region, and around the world. And that includes the educational experience that we offer. 'We encourage, enable, and provide opportunities for every one of you to be of service to society - either by volunteerism, advocacy, supporting, and even creating community-focus initiatives, or through any pathway that allows you to give something to others. 'Nothing makes us prouder than when we see the growth not only of future professionals, but of young people who embody good citizenship, and who recognise that being of service to society is also an investment in your own future. The day-long event also included student showcases, where representatives from QF universities spoke about community service and student engagement, along with a fair that introduced new students to the opportunities available across Education City. Keynote speaker Amjad Alnour – a filmmaker, journalist, and TV presenter – spoke about his own college experience, encouraging students to recognise the value of helping others. And he told them: 'Why don't you try advocacy? Find yourself a cause that's worth fighting for, give it your all, and see how that makes you feel. 'Not only will it help you shift the focus from your own personal problems by being of service to others, but it will also give you a sense of fulfilment and self-worth – a sense that you matter to those people that seek help. With the explosion of AI, social media, and technology, you have the tools to be loud and to speak up.' QF's higher education ecosystem includes Hamad Bin Khalifa University and seven partner universities: Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar; Georgetown University in Qatar; HEC Paris, Doha; Northwestern University in Qatar; Texas A&M University at Qatar; Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar; and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar.
