DTU welcomes new batch with orientation-cum-induction ceremony
Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood joined the event virtually as the Chief Guest, a DTU statement said.
Sood, in his address, congratulated the new students for gaining admission to one of India's premier technical institutions and encouraged them to not only excel academically but also contribute meaningfully to society.
Calling upon students to participate in Swachhta Abhiyan, the minister emphasised the importance of sustainable urban development and urged students to devise innovative, research-based solutions for Delhi's unique challenges. 'Your journey at DTU should prepare you not just as engineers, but as responsible citizens aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals,' he said.
The event commenced with a ceremonial lamp lighting by the chief guest, Karnal Singh, former chief of the Enforcement Directorate and a 1979 batch alumnus of the erstwhile Delhi College of Engineering (DCE). To mark the occasion, the university launched the 68th edition of DTU Times and premiered a special documentary by DTU Studio, capturing the event's spirit, the statement said.

Pune's air quality dips sharply in 2024, states PMC report
.PUNE: The city's air quality worsened in 2024-25 with only 52 'good air' days recorded out of 365, compared to 79 such days in 2023-24; according to the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC's) Environmental Status Report (ESR) 2024-25 released on Tuesday. The number of 'moderate air' days rose from 140 in 2023-24 to 174 in 2024-25 just as the number of 'poor air' days rose from one in 2023-24 to three in 2024-25 and the number of 'satisfactory air' days fell from 145 in 2023-24 to 137 in 2024-25. No 'very poor/severe air' days were reported in either year. Environmental experts have linked the rise in pollution to increasing vehicle numbers and construction activity. Part of the Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan, PMC's report supports the UN's Sustainable Development Goals while assessing the city's environment across five parameters namely earth, air, water, energy and sky. Bird biodiversity also rose with 275 species reported — up from 253 species in 2023-24. On the energy front, the city doubled its rooftop solar power capacity over two years, reaching 1.66 lakh kW in 2024–25 with more than 60% coming from residential users. Water pollution still a major concern Despite increased dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in the Mula-Mutha river (now at 5.34 mg/l), pollution levels remain high. The chemical and biological oxygen demand (COD and BOD) are still above the safe limit. Lakes such as Pashan and Katraj recorded similar pollution levels, despite slight improvements. The city now generates around 2,400 tonnes of waste daily, including 1,350–1,400 tonnes of dry waste. Waste processing plants handle 1,440 tonnes of dry waste and 1,105 tonnes of wet waste. Biomining efforts have reclaimed nearly 28.5 acres of land, with ongoing work on another 10 lakh MT in the current phase. Rainfall and public health Rainfall more than doubled from 2023-24 with Pune receiving 1,311 mm of rainfall in 2024–25. The maximum temperature touched 41.8°C, while the minimum temperature dipped to 7.8°C. Health concerns rose with a spike in mosquito-borne diseases. Dengue cases increased from 3,377 to 4,958 this year, and chikungunya cases surged from 40 to 485. Focus on climate resilience As part of climate adaptation, 250 aquifers have been identified under the NDMA's Urban Flood Risk Management Programme for development as recharge zones. LED street lighting now covers over 2.13 lakh units in the city, leading to 56% energy savings. Naval Kishore Ram, Pune municipal commissioner, said, 'The ESR of Pune city was presented before the general body. It includes detailed analysis across various environmental parameters. The PMC is actively working to reduce pollution and cut carbon emissions. In the next two years, Pune will witness several major improvements in green initiatives.'

Delhi Govt To Hold Entrance Test For Admission To 33 CM SHRI Schools For Classes 6 To 8
Last Updated: The Delhi government will conduct an entrance test for Class 6 to 8 admissions in 33 CM SHRI schools, with applications open until August 15. The Delhi government has announced that an entrance examination will be conducted for admissions to Classes 6 to 8 in 33 of the 75 newly shortlisted CM SHRI schools for the academic session 2025–26. The Directorate of Education (DoE) has issued detailed guidelines and named the entrance exam the CM SHRI Schools Admission Test 2025. The CM SHRI schools, which have been designated as 'Specified Category' institutions under Section 2 of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, aim to transform existing government schools into model institutions. These schools will incorporate modern infrastructure and innovative teaching methods aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. According to the DoE guidelines, the admission test will follow a 'fair, transparent and merit-based selection process." Only students currently residing in Delhi and enrolled in Classes 6, 7 or 8 in any recognised Delhi-based school during the 2025–26 session will be eligible to apply. At least 50 per cent of the total seats in each CM SHRI school will be reserved for students enrolled in government or government-aided schools in Delhi, including institutions under the DoE, MCD, NDMC, Kendriya Vidyalayas, and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas. The application process for the entrance test will be conducted online. The registration window will open on July 30 and remain active until August 15. Admit cards for eligible candidates will be released on August 23, while the entrance test is scheduled to be held on August 30 from 11 am to 1:30 pm. As per the guidelines, the test will be an OMR-based, objective-type examination with no provision for negative marking. It will be conducted in both Hindi and English and will assess candidates across five sections: Hindi, English, General Awareness, Mental Ability, and Numerical Aptitude. The total duration of the exam will be 150 minutes, with additional time allotted for CWSN candidates as per prevailing norms. The results of the entrance test will be declared on September 10, and all admissions will be finalised by September 15. The DoE has also confirmed that test centres will be established across various schools under its jurisdiction to ensure easy accessibility for students from all parts of the city. The CM SHRI schools are expected to be inaugurated in September, an official said, as preparations for their operationalisation are underway. The initiative, announced earlier this year, aims to provide 'high-quality, future-ready education" in Delhi's government schools. Earlier, Education Minister Ashish Sood had said that the government had provisionally shortlisted 75 schools to be developed under the CM SHRI scheme. Modelled after the Centre's PM SHRI schools, these institutions will follow the NEP 2020 and implement the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023. Officials added that these schools are being built with an emphasis on sustainability, designed to operate as zero-waste and solar-powered campuses. They will feature AI-enabled libraries, smart classrooms equipped with augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) tools, biometric attendance systems, smartboards, and robotics laboratories to foster innovation and creativity among students. In another major shift, the Delhi government is phasing out the Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE). All schools currently affiliated with DBSE will now be transitioned to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). At least 50 per cent of the available seats will be reserved for students currently studying in government or government-aided schools in Delhi, including those under the Directorate of Education (DoE), MCD, NDMC, Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, it stated. The guideline further mentioned that a 5 per cent relaxation in eligibility marks will be provided to students belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer) categories and Children With Special Needs (CWSN), in line with government policy. The online application window will open on July 30 and remain active until August 15 and admit cards will be available from August 23, while the test is scheduled for August 30 between 11am and 1.30 pm, it stated. As per the guidelines, the results will be declared on September 10, with admissions to be completed by September 15. The test will be an OMR-based, objective-type paper with no negative marking. It will be bilingual and cover five key section — Hindi, English, General Awareness, Mental Ability and Numerical Aptitude. The total duration of the test will be 150 minutes, with extra time granted to CWSN candidates as per existing norms, it added.
