SIBU (May 22): The construction of a car park at Rumah Chinda in Rantau Panjang here is set to commence soon, said councillor Kevin Lau.
He said the project is funded by the special Rural Transformation Programme allocation approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
'I hope the project will proceed smoothly. Our team will continue to monitor the progress of the project until its successful completion,' said Lau, who is Sarawak United People's Party Bawang Assan chairman.
He also reminded the longhouse's residents to exercise caution when using the area during the construction period.
Meanwhile, Lau informed that maintenance works at Jalan Rantau Panjang has also commenced, funded under the Malaysia Road Records Information System (Marris) fund applied for last year by Councillor Johnny Ganing.
'As the road turning point is a bit narrow, we will seek for the culvert to be extended so that the turning can be slightly widened to increase road safety for the community there,' he said. Kevin Lau lead rantau panjang Rumah Chinda SUPP Bawang Assan

New parking facility to ease congestion at Rh Joseph Jarrau

Lau (fourth left) witnesses the handover of the parking facility project at Rumah Joseph Jarrau between SRDC and the contractor. SIBU (Aug 21): A long-standing parking issue at Rumah Joseph Jarrau in Tanjung Bekakap is set to be resolved with the construction of a new 100-metre-long parking facility, scheduled to begin next week. The RM93,000 project, funded under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) special allocation for the Bawang Assan state constituency, is expected to be completed within three months. According to Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch chairman Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie, the project was initiated following a complaint lodged by Tuai Rumah Joseph to Councillor Johnny Ganning several months ago. The matter was subsequently brought to the attention of the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC). 'I have visited the site several times, and I'm pleased the project is now officially set to begin,' Lau said during the handover ceremony to the appointed contractor, Ismawi Enterprise, on Tuesday. Lau, who is SRDC Standing Committee chairman, said the parking facility will benefit not only the longhouse residents but also churchgoers in the area, particularly on weekends and during festive seasons. Expressing his gratitude, Tuai Rumah Joseph thanked all parties involved for approving the much-needed project. 'This facility will ease the parking situation for both residents and visitors, particularly during major events,' he said. In a related development, Lau also witnessed the handover of another infrastructure project, the upgrading of Jalan Yong Kok in the Engkilo area. The 95-metre road improvement project, also funded under the RTP for the Bawang Assan constituency, will be carried out in two phases. Both projects aim to enhance basic infrastructure and improve the quality of life for rural residents, in line with the state government's RTP objectives. Join NGOs, drive nation-building efforts, Minister tells youths

Lee (seated centre) and (from fourth left) Lau, Yong, Tan, Candy, Yee pose with the judges and top 30 finalists for the Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians (TOYM) Awards. MIRI (Aug 18): Youths should consider joining non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as the Junior Chamber International (JCI) to cultivate positive values, leadership qualities, and contribute to nation-building, said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. Lee said society today needs more young people who can propose solutions and drive constructive progress, rather than those who only criticise and create problems. 'JCI is an international organisation that promotes positive change. They want to develop our young people into future leaders so that we will have a better world and a better future,' said Lee. 'This is why I say JCI is a very good youth organisation, and I would like to call on more youths to be part of it,' he said during a dinner announcing the Top 30 finalists for the Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians (TOYM) Awards at a hotel here on Saturday. Lee, who is also a JCI Senator, stressed that the first step towards creating positive change is cultivating a positive mindset. He added that youths are the future leaders of the country, and it is vital that they are empowered with positive values and constructive thinking to drive change in various aspects of society. Lee also noted that the TOYM Awards not only recognise individual achievements but also celebrate the wider impact these young leaders have on the community and the nation. 'TOYM adopts internationally recognised nomination and selection systems, giving young people the chance to build global networks, exchange ideas with outstanding achievers, and represent Malaysia on the world stage,' he said. 'Tonight, we are honouring not only the personal successes of our 30 finalists but also their contributions to society in various fields.' He also reminded the finalists that being part of TOYM opens doors to international exposure and opportunities. 'Young leaders should look beyond Malaysia and think globally. With rapid technological advancement and the rise of artificial intelligence, we must keep pace with global trends and challenges,' he added. Meanwhile, organising chairlady Candy Yong said this year's TOYM received more than 100 nominations from various fields, reflecting strong encouragement from youths nationwide. The final Top 10 winners will be announced at a gala event at Pullman Hotel Miri on Sept 19. Present at the dinner were Pujut assemblyman Mayor Adam Yii; Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Youth chief, Councillor Leslie Lau; JCI Malaysia National president Tan Wei Jian; and JCI Miri president Sam Yong.

Businessman takes Sabah's entrepreneurial voice to world stage

Dexter Lau delivering his keynote speech at the 'Trade Connectivity and Global Expansion' High-Level Forum of the 15th Malaysia–China Entrepreneurs Conference. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 14): Malaysia–China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Sabah president Datuk Dexter Lau has taken Sabah's entrepreneurial voice to the world stage with a compelling keynote at the 'Trade Connectivity and Global Expansion' High-Level Forum during the 15th Malaysia–China Entrepreneurs Conference. Held from August 12 to 14 in Guiyang, China, the event brought together nearly 1,000 government and business leaders from Malaysia, China, and abroad, cementing its role in promoting bilateral cooperation and regional economic integration. Speaking in an open, 'heart-to-heart' style, Lau, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Kim Teck Cheong Consolidated Berhad (KTC), shared practical business strategies drawn from KTC's transformation from a local enterprise into a regional FMCG powerhouse. He underscored how trade connectivity and global expansion can be leveraged to forge cross-border partnerships and unlock new markets. Recalling his time at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania — the world's top-ranked business school — Lau said a professor once told him he was 'not yet ready' to be an entrepreneur because he focused more on what he wanted to do than on profitability, returns and growth. That blunt assessment, he said, reshaped his outlook on building sustainable enterprises grounded in clear business models and executable strategies. Representing not just Sabah but the whole of Borneo — including Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei — Lau highlighted the island's strategic role in regional trade. With 12 years until KTC celebrates its 100th anniversary, he reaffirmed his commitment to mentoring the company's fourth-generation leadership to ensure it thrives for another century. 'Expanding globally is no longer a choice — it is a must,' he said. 'We are here to share how we achieved it, how we are doing it today, and where KTC is heading in the future. This is not just about market reach but about laying the foundation for sustainable, long-term growth.' Lau stressed that human capital is the cornerstone of any enterprise, and that corporate social responsibility is both a moral duty and a strategic investment. He said true 'win–win' results are not just measured in higher trade volumes but in sustainable practices that enhance local influence, broaden networks, and deliver benefits to all stakeholders. With opportunities arising from multilateral agreements such as RCEP, expanding infrastructure in Southeast Asia, and accelerating digital transformation, Lau urged businesses to act decisively in four areas — localisation, digital technology, strategic partnerships, and sustainability — to strengthen their position in the global marketplace. His keynote drew warm applause, reflecting the audience's appreciation for his strategic insight and pragmatic leadership. Lau's presence also reinforced MCCC Sabah's growing influence in connecting Malaysian enterprises to international opportunities. Adding a personal touch to the visit, Lau's mother, Datin Lim Fook Len, attended the conference in person to support her son and the MCCC Sabah delegation. Other speakers at the forum included Professor Chen Xiaoyun, Chairman of the Board of Kuala Lumpur University of Science and Technology and Chairman of Star Youth Culture Research Institute; Dato' Ho Kwee Hong, Divisional General Manager of Eco World Development Group Berhad; Grace Kwok, Chairman and Executive Director of Allied Sustainability and Environmental Consultants Group Limited; Han Ruiguo, General Manager of Hisense Electronic Co., Ltd.; and Professor Huang Ying, Secretary of the Party Committee of Guiyang University. The session was moderated by veteran Malaysian business leader Datuk Tan Yee Boon.
