Ministry to boost supply of special grade eggs after subsidy removal
He said this would provide the public with more affordable egg options while helping to stabilise prices.
'We also aim to increase the supply of cheaper special eggs like those sold during Ramadan (March) recently, which were priced at RM5 per tray.
'This time, we're not sure what the price will be, but we are confident it will not spike uncontrollably,' he told reporters after attending Terengganu Pakatan Harapan's (PH) Aidilfitri Open House here today.
On April 30, KPKM announced the subsidy removal and stated that several intervention measures would be implemented jointly with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) to minimise the impact on the people's cost of living.
Among these measures, the government has secured the industry's commitment to introduce special grade eggs at reasonable prices.
Mohamad said, in addition to special grade eggs, the public can obtain competitively priced eggs through nationwide initiatives such as Jualan Agro MADANI and Jualan Rahmah.
He also emphasised that the decision to completely end both the egg subsidy and price controls—as well as the reduction in subsidy rate from RM0.10 to RM0.05 per egg effective May 1—was made through stakeholder engagement.
'The decision was made via consultation. We negotiated first with egg producers and industry players. We also implemented the removal in a soft landing manner, not abruptly. Hence, I believe egg prices will not surge,' he said.
Meanwhile, he also encouraged the cultivation of local young coconuts, especially aromatic varieties like pandan coconuts, in response to rising demand from China.
'This presents an opportunity, for example, for Terengganu with its vast land area to focus on this crop which can generate good income. China has a population of over 1.4 billion, with more than 800 million having spending power... this is a real economic opportunity,' he said.
On April 19, Agriculture Department Director-General Datuk Nor Sam Alwi said the opening of the fresh coconut market to China under the Phytosanitary Requirements Protocol marks a strengthening of biosecurity measures and the establishment of a more systematic traceability element in quality young coconut production.
He said Malaysia will export young coconuts primarily for fresh beverage consumption, with priority given to aromatic varieties such as pandan coconuts, which are known for their unique fragrance and a brix sweetness level of around 6.7.

Chinese man sues gym after paying over RM500k for 300-year membership, owner disappears
A fitness enthusiast in eastern China has taken a gym to court after spending over 870,000 yuan (approx. RM506,580) on memberships and lessons spanning an astonishing 300 years — only for the management to vanish with his money. The man, identified as Jin, told Zhejiang Television that he had been a loyal member of Ranyan Gym in Hangzhou's Binjiang District for three years when a sales executive pitched him an offer too good to resist. 'From May 10 to July 9, I bought about 1,200 lessons and membership cards with an accumulative validity period of 300 years, at a total cost of 871,273 yuan (approx. RM512,312),' Jin said, showing the station 26 signed contracts. According to South China Morning Post, the sales pitch claimed that an 8,888 yuan (approx. RM5,226) one-year membership for existing customers could be resold to new clients for 16,666 yuan, with 10% of the profit going to the gym and the rest to the seller. 'He said if they did not sell it within two months, they would return all the money to me,' Jin recalled. Initially sceptical, Jin bought two cards worth over 17,000 yuan (approx. RM9,996) before being persuaded to make larger purchases — including one transaction exceeding 300,000 yuan (approx. RM176,401). By mid-July, when he was supposed to receive some of his principal back, no payment arrived. A sales executive told him the finance department was 'still reviewing the transaction,' but by the end of the month, the management and sales staff had disappeared. Zhejiang TV found the gym still operating but staffed only by reception and administrative workers. Contracts Jin signed made no mention of the promised returns and prohibited transferring memberships to others. 'I admit that I have been brainwashed by them, because I believed I was only one small step away from getting back all my money,' he said. Jin described the purchase as a 'health investment,' adding, 'I actually do not count on using it for 300 years. In my eyes, it was a kind of commitment to health.' His story has ignited both shock and amusement online. 'He bought the gym card for the grandsons of his grandsons, ha,' one netizen joked, while another remarked: 'When a person's wealth and his intelligence quotient do not match, the redundant wealth will flow back to society in some form.'

Ministry targets 350 Agro Madani sales programmes in Sarawak this year
Arthur (third left) joins other guests for a photo call during the launch of the National Month special edition of Jualan Agro Madani at the compounds of Masjid Al-Malik, Taman Unigarden today. – Photo by Mohd Faisal Ahmad KOTA SAMARAHAN (Aug 13): The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, through the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama), has set a target of 350 Agro Madani sales programmes in Sarawak this year, said Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup. The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security said the programmes are part of the ministry's efforts to help reduce the cost of living while supporting local farmers and entrepreneurs by providing direct market access without intermediaries. 'As of July 31, Fama Sarawak has implemented 46 programmes with total sales amounting to RM191,062.10,' he said during a press conference after launching the National Month special edition of Jualan Agro Madani at the compounds of Masjid Al-Malik, Taman Unigarden here today. Arthur added that the figures reflect only the first month of implementation, as the current cycle began in July. He noted that Sarawak recorded RM7.58 million in sales last year through 473 programmes involving 3,459 entrepreneurs. Nationwide, 495 Agro Madani sales have been held so far in this cycle. The ministry is targeting 3,500 programmes this year, with projected sales of RM52.5 million, expected savings of RM15.75 million, and participation from 52,500 entrepreneurs reaching 1.75 million consumers. In 2024, 7,295 Agro Madani sales programmes were held, generating RM162.45 million in sales, benefiting 92,065 entrepreneurs and reaching 4.28 million consumers, with household savings amounting to RM43.64 million. Arthur said that public demand for Agro Madani sales is high, with the possibility of exceeding this year's target, similar to last year, when the nationwide goal of 5,000 programmes was surpassed, reaching 7,295. 'By bringing products directly from farms to consumers, we help the public enjoy savings of between 10 and 30 per cent, while also boosting product marketing and sales for our entrepreneurs,' he said. Today's special edition event in Kota Samarahan featured various activities, including the Happy Hour Sale (Jualan Agro Madani), the Eat Local Fruits Campaign, and the distribution of pineapples to visitors, organised in collaboration with the N17 Stakan Service Centre. Also present at the event were Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Ibrahim dan Fama director-general Abdul Rashid Bahri.

Malaysia emerges as strategic gateway for South Korean halal products
KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia continues to strengthen its position as a global halal hub by serving as a strategic gateway for South Korean halal products into Southeast Asian and West Asian markets. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu (picture) said cooperation with South Korea is also vital for the nation's food security by diversifying halal supplies from various countries, thereby reducing reliance on a single source. 'God willing, such efforts will continue for a more secure future for halal food for Malaysians,' he said in a Facebook post today. During his recent visit to South Korea, Mohamad said he had the opportunity to visit the country's only recognised halal slaughterhouse, Handawoon FSL Co Ltd, to witness first-hand the slaughtering and butchering process of premium Hanwoo beef, which is now in high demand in international markets. 'I want to ensure that halal food supplies arriving in Malaysia are not only of high quality but also fully comply with syariah standards and are safe for consumption,' he said. Mohamad said Malaysia is the only country to receive halal Hanwoo beef after Handawoon FSL was granted approval to export the meat to Malaysia in May 2023, and the response from Malaysians has been very positive. The company is also seeking to expand its market to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), further demonstrating South Korea's capability to produce halal products that meet international standards, despite not being a Muslim country, he added. — BERNAMA
