Minister slams Jairam for taking on facial recognition tool for Anganwadi benefits
NEW DELHI: The centre on Monday said the push to make facial recognition mandatory for Anganwadi beneficiaries is to use technology to ensure transparency and inclusion in welfare schemes.
Responding to sharp criticism from Congress leader Jairam Ramesh accusation that the centre's use of digital tools, like facial recognition technology (FRT), Aadhaar and biometric authentication exclude the poorest and most vulnerable from essential entitlements, like rations and maternity benefits, the Union Minister for Women and Child Development Annapurna Devi hit back, saying, 'it is absolutely wrong.'
In a post on X, Devi said, "Modi government is ensuring transparency and inclusion in welfare schemes through technology. Congress, on the other hand, only spreads lies and misinformation and obstructs effective implementation of our schemes."
To rebut the charge, the minister cited data to argue that technological interventions have expanded access, not reduced it.
'It is absolutely wrong to say that the use of technology has led to a drop in PMMVY (Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana) beneficiaries," she said.
She said first-time beneficiaries under PMMVY rose from 72.05 lakh in 2019-20 to 80.48 lakh in 2024-25 — the highest ever. In just the first quarter of 2025-26, over 27 lakh new beneficiaries have already been on-boarded.

This incident is a mirror for those who claim that caste is no longer an issue. Every incident that tramples the dignity of Dalits is an attack on Baba Saheb's Constitution, a conspiracy against equality, justice, and humanity." Live Events Gandhi demanded that the culprits be immediately arrested and given strict punishment. "Such incidents are becoming common in BJP-ruled states because their politics is built on hatred and hierarchy. Atrocities against SCs, STs, and women have alarmingly increased, especially in Odisha. The culprits must be immediately arrested and given strict punishment. The country will run by the Constitution, not by Manusmriti," the post reads. Earlier on June 21, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi accused the Election Commission of "match fixing" the elections, claiming that the new instructions to delete CCTV footage of the election after 45 days of polls is just a way to "delete evidence." The Leader of Opposition raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process, citing the destruction of evidence as a potential indicator of election rigging. He warned that a fixed election would be "poison for democracy," highlighting the need for a free and fair electoral process. The Congress leader alleged that the CCTV footage is being hidden by changing the law, raising suspicions about the intentions behind this move.

Telangana government failed to implement farm loan waiver: Minister Kishan
HYDERABAD: Union minister and BJP state president G Kishan Reddy alleged that despite Central government's efforts, the state government failed to implement the assured Rs 2 lakh farm loan waiver scheme effectively. Addressing the media after chairing the State Level Bankers Committee (SLBC) meeting here on Monday, Kishan Reddy said that around 15,000 eligible farmers were registered with Telangana Grameena Bank. But, funds were not credited to them for the crop loan waiver, he said. Several farmers who took farm loans below Rs 1 lakh were yet to benefit from the loan waiver scheme, he alleged. Kishan Reddy urged the state government to act swiftly, collect accurate information from banks and ensure that eligible farmers receive their crop loan waiver benefits. Kishan Reddy noted that there was a growth in agricultural loans since 2013–14. At that time, the total agricultural loan disbursal in Telangana stood at Rs 27,676 crore. By 2024–25, that figure had increased to Rs 1,37,346 crore — almost a fivefold increase in 11 years, he said and highlighted the Centre's commitment to supporting farmers in Telangana. The meeting mainly reviewed the performance of banks in implementing Central schemes. He reviewed agricultural loans, PM Mudra Loans, PM Vishwakarma Yojana, PM SVANidhi, Stand-Up India and other initiatives. He instructed the officials to prepare detailed information on Vishwakarma Yojana.

Telangana Dy CM Bhatti urges Congress workers to make Rythu Bharosa fete a success
HYDERABAD: Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Monday called upon Congress workers to participate in large numbers in celebrations being organised to mark the successful disbursement of Rythu Bharosa money to farmers in just nine days. He was addressing them at a meeting chaired by TPCC chief B Mahesh Kumar Goud and AICC Telangana in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan at Gandhi Bhavan. He said: 'Under our government, Rythu Bharosa is being paid to all cultivable lands without any discrimination. The disbursement of Rythu Bharosa was completed in just nine days, which is a record in the history of the state.' Gandhi Bhavan, on Monday, buzzed with key meetings such as the TPCC Delimitation Committee convened under the chairmanship of Ch Vamshi Chand Reddy, followed by a meeting of the Samvidhan Bachao Programme Committee chaired by Dr Vinay, AICC Telangana in-charge, and attended by AICC secretaries. However, there were some jarring notes. Tensions briefly flared as members of the Golla-Kuruma community staged a protest in front of Gandhi Bhavan. Chanting slogans, they demanded immediate intervention by the TPCC leadership alleging that no action was being taken to address their long-standing issues. They wanted the chief minister to respond. Meenakshi Natarajan, while addressing party functionaries, emphasized the importance of the 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan' campaigns to raise public awareness about constitutional values and welfare schemes. She called on leaders — both senior and junior — to work in close coordination without hierarchy and ensure the government's programmes reach the grassroots effectively. On Tuesday, Gandhi Bhavan will host meetings of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC), Advisory Committee, and Disciplinary Committee, which will be attended by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Cabinet ministers, and senior Congress leaders.
