Did Amazon Just Say "Checkmate" to The Trade Desk?

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) made a name for itself by leading not just one industry, but two. The company, known for its smiley-faced delivery boxes, has long been the dominant force in e-commerce as the world's largest digital retailer. If that weren't enough, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the undisputed leader of the cloud computing industry it pioneered.
In recent years, Amazon has been focused on an area that has become the company's fastest-growing business: advertising. What began as a way for Amazon to capitalize on the digital real estate on its website is now getting an increasing amount of attention and resources. In fact, a couple of recent developments have put Amazon on a collision course with The Trade Desk (NASDAQ: TTD), one of the leading names in programmatic advertising.

Poaching customers?
The Trade Desk is the leading independent provider of programmatic advertising services via its demand-side platform (DSP). This self-serve platform helps advertisers and ad agencies purchase digital advertising space and provides a magnitude of data and analytics to track progress and help manage their ad campaigns. What sets The Trade Desk apart in the digital advertising space is its industry-leading technology and the long-term partnerships it has forged with the world's largest ad agencies.
Furthermore, each of the "walled gardens" -- including Alphabet 's Google, Meta Platforms, and Amazon -- has a vested interest in directing ads to their own sites, creating a clear conflict of interest. The Trade Desk's independence has helped attract new business and fuel its impressive growth streak, as the stock has surged 2,350% since the company's IPO in late 2016.
However, evidence suggests Amazon is doing its level best to poach The Trade Desk's customers. A recent report by Adweek suggested that marketers have been moving millions of dollars in ad spending from The Trade Desk to Amazon. Advertisers have been attracted by cut-rate pricing, the growing reach of Prime Video, and access to the company's exclusive live sports programming, according to the report.
On its own, this normally wouldn't raise an eyebrow, but Amazon recently made another move that suggests the company is coming for The Trade Desk.
An eye-opening partnership
Last month, Amazon announced a strategic partnership with Roku (NASDAQ: ROKU) that will provide advertisers with access to "the largest authenticated connected TV (CTV) footprint in the U.S. exclusively through Amazon DSP," according to the press release. It goes on to note that the pair reaches an estimated 80 million CTV households, representing more than 80% of all CTV households in the country. The partnership includes many of the most popular streaming channels, including ad-supported offerings by most of the major players.
Early results are impressive. Advertisers using this new integration reached 40% more unique viewers with the same budget. Perhaps more importantly, it reduced the number of times a person saw the same ad by almost 30%, solving a common problem in CTV advertising.
Roku's reach in the U.S. is undeniable. The streaming pioneer closed out 2024 with roughly 90 million streaming households and more than 34 billion streaming hours -- which works out to more than four hours of viewing per household per day.
Does this spell trouble for The Trade Desk?
It's important to view these developments in the context of the overall trajectory of the industry. Total ad spending has doubled since 2016 and is expected to climb roughly 9% and surpass $1 trillion in 2025, according to eMarketer. Digital advertising is the fastest-growing segment of the industry, accounting for roughly $764 billion in ad spending this year. The growing market size represents a greater opportunity for all the major adtech players.
Wall Street seems to have mixed feelings about these developments. Analysts at MoffettNathanson believe this shows that Amazon is "chipping away" at The Trade Desk's moat. On the other hand, analysts at Citi cite channel checks in concluding that The Trade Desk is "the clear market share leader" and best-performing DSP. Despite the growing competition, analysts at Evercore ISI posit that Google might actually have more to lose, since more of its business overlaps with that of Amazon.
So, did Amazon just say "checkmate" to The Trade Desk? I would respond with a resounding "no." During the period in which Amazon was reportedly siphoning away "millions" from The Trade Desk, Amazon grew its advertising sales 18% year over year, while The Trade Desk's revenue grew 25%. This helps to illustrate that this isn't a zero-sum game, and there will no doubt be more than one winner.
Furthermore, The Trade Desk recently released its cutting-edge Kokai platform, which integrates artificial intelligence (AI) throughout the ad buying process, providing greater transparency and better outcomes for users.
Given The Trade Desk's industry-leading market share, state-of-the-art technology, and enduring relationships with ad agencies, I would argue that The Trade Desk remains ahead of the game. And, at 34 times next year's earnings, the stock is trading at a significant discount to its three-year average, representing a compelling opportunity at today's price.

Trump's ‘reciprocal' tariff pause is about to expire. Cue the confusion

The 90-day deadline U.S. President Donald Trump set for countries to make trade deals with the United States or risk substantially higher tariffs is just days away. What will happen after that's reached at 12:01 a.m. ET on July 9 is anyone's best guess. The stakes could not be higher, with the entire global economy on notice. On April 2, a date Trump dubbed 'Liberation Day,' he unveiled new, 'reciprocal' tariff rates for key US trading partners, with some levies as high as 50 per cent. Collectively, the rates were the highest the US has charged on foreign goods in over a century. Economists quickly sounded alarms about a recession hitting not just certain countries, but rather the whole world. As the tariffs went into effect on April 9, they sparked a sell-off on Wall Street and the bond market rebelled, forcing Trump to announce a three-month pause to give countries more time to solidify deals with the US, saying investors 'were getting a little bit yippy, a little afraid.' Since then, almost all goods the US imports have been subject to a minimum 10 per cent tariff. Stocks, meanwhile, have not only recovered all those losses but have set multiple new record highs. And inflation has barely budged. But if tariffs start to rise again and inflation roars back, those gains could quickly get erased all over again. After months of meeting with foreign government officials and countless claims that several trading partners were on the cusp of completing deals, only three have been announced. One of those, with Vietnam, has yet to be finalized and few details are known about it. Still, the Trump administration is advertising that a flurry of deals are forthcoming. At the same time, the president has threatened to send letters to countries that don't ink deals, telling them the rate at which their exports to the US will be taxed. Leading up to July 9, Trump administration officials threatened to simply return to April tariff rates, or possibly even higher levies. They also floated the possibility of extending the pause for countries 'negotiating in good faith,' without defining what that means or which it includes. It's not clear where Trump, who will get the ultimate say, stands. 'We can do whatever we want. We could extend it; we could make it shorter,' Trump recently said. 'I'd like to make it shorter. I'd like to just sent letters out to everybody, 'Congratulations, you're paying 25 per cent.'' 'We'll look at how a country treats us — are they good, are they not so good — some countries we don't care, we'll just send a high number out,' Trump also recently said. On Friday, he said he'd begin sending letters over the coming days. 'They'll range in value from maybe 60 per cent or 70 per cent tariffs to 10 per cent and 20 per cent tariffs,' Trump said. For many countries, such rates would deal an even bigger economic blow compared to the levels Trump announced in April. But countries may have the opportunity to still negotiate, given Trump said most new rates won't take effect until August 1. America's evolving pain tolerance for higher tariffs The deal Trump announced on Wednesday with Vietnam, which calls for minimum tariffs of 20 per cent on Vietnamese goods, double the rate throughout the three-month pause, has raised the possibility that countries may not be able to score lower rates even if they reach a trade agreement. But considering tariffs on Vietnam were set to rise to a minimum of 46 per cent if the rates Trump announced in April held — which was among the highest Trump announced — 20 per cent suddenly feels like a relief. That may be an intentional strategy on Trump's part, allowing him to stick to his major campaign promise of levying higher tariffs on other nations in an effort to raise revenues and bring manufacturing jobs back to the US. 'On balance, we take the U.S.-Vietnam accord as a positive step toward more durable bilateral deals for the US and toward greater clarity for investors,' Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi, global head of equities at UBS Global Wealth Management, said in a note last week. 'Headline risks around trade may persist as negotiations continue, but we think the market impact should moderate as President Trump's negotiating tactics become increasingly familiar,' he said. 'Ultimately, we expect the US administration to prioritize economic stability over more maximalist tariffs, especially ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.' Elisabeth Buchwald, CNN

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntosh CALGARY — Canada's top soldier is looking forward to a boost in military spending that includes a pay raise for military personnel at a time when uncertainty on the world stage is high. NATO leaders — including Canada — have approved a plan to dramatically increase defence spending across the Western alliance to five per cent of gross domestic product over the next decade. Prime Minister Mark Carney said the move to five per cent of GDP — 3.5 per cent for core military spending and 1.5 per cent for defence-related infrastructure — will take place over the next 10 years. In an interview with The Canadian Press Saturday, Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan said work is underway to figure out how to distribute the almost 20 per cent pay hikes promised by Defence Minister David McGuinty. 'It's an envelope that will be adapting to what we need. Some of it will be a pay increase, some of it will be for benefit allowances for specific trades or specific functions,' Carignan said. 'Yes there will be a raise this year. Yes that's the aim so we want everything to be ready for the fall and winter time.' Carignan said the amount of the pay hike will depend on a soldier's rank and allowances will be allocated to specific trades where CAF needs more people. 'For example recruiting and training is a priority. We want to make sure we encourage instructors in our schools so they're going to be additional benefits as an example,' she said. Chief Warrant Officer Bob McCann said the extra pay and benefits will be a morale booster for military personnel. 'We're in a great space right now where there's a lot of attention on defence. For the troops this is outstanding because this is why we joined. We want to serve. We want to be part of Canada's defence,' McCann said. 'We want to have equipment to train so everything that's coming is truly positive and we do have 107 trades that are highly competitive with the civilian industry so getting folks in, getting them trained, takes the pressure off the troops that are already there.' Carignan said it's been a good year for recruiting with the CAF surpassing its objective by 2,000 for the first time in 10 years. She said fewer people are leaving the service as well. About 18 per cent of the new recruits are women. 'A very good retention rate and a lot more people coming in which means we are growing at CAF at the moment and very positive.' Carignan said plans are in place to boost the number of military personnel. 'We are focusing on going back to our full complement of regular Canadian Armed Forces members and reserve force so it's 30,000 reserves we are aiming for and 71,500 regular forces,' she said. 'We have additional positions that are also approved and as time goes by and we are close to our ceiling we will add additional forces.' Carignan said the extra funding will help keep Canada safe. 'Our geography does not protect us as well as it used to. We need to have more investment to actually exercise our own sovereignty here in Canada and of course this implies the Arctic,' she said. 'It is getting more contested, more traffic, more people interested in this area so of course we have to invest more in the Arctic to make sure our sovereignty is respected.' Carignan wants to see more radar bases and being able to scramble jets or ships if required. 'We have to have the sensors in place — once you have seen you have to have the ability to intercept or actually act,' she said.
