PENAMPANG: Twenty one public buildings in the district have been identified to be gazetted as Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) to accommodate victims during flood. Penampang Member of Parliament Datuk Ewon Benedick said the initiative follows efforts to improve flood disaster management after the district experienced severe floods last year. 'Previously, Penampang only had one PPS. This is no longer practical, especially for villagers living in remote areas such as Kampung Sugud and Kampung Kolopis who had to be relocated to the Penampang Cultural Centre during floods. 'We have identified 21 suitable public buildings which will be gazetted as PPS to facilitate evacuation and rescue operations,' he said when officiating the district-level Kaamatan Festival celebration on Sunday. Ewon, who is also Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister said several high-impact development projects have been implemented or are ongoing in Penampang since 2023. These include flood mitigation works in Donggongon, upgrading of the main drainage system, improvement of the Terian-Buayan Road, construction of the Donggongon Tamu, a new bridge in Babagon, and land surveying in Kampung Togudon under the Pantas Programme.
Advertisement 'The long-delayed construction of the Donggongon Tamu finally began last month, following a site visit and discussions with the Director-General of the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU), Prime Minister's Department, in January 2023. 'Issues related to land ownership on hillside areas such as in Kampung Togudon have also been resolved through the Pantas Programme,' he said. Ewon also announced that the Penampang District Council was upgraded to a Municipal Council last year. Under his ministry, several agencies have expanded their presence to Penampang, including the upgraded Bank Rakyat Penampang branch, Tekun Nasional, INSKEN Sabah, SME Corp Sabah, as well as the MSME Hub and TikTok Shop Live Hub Studio. 'New initiatives such as the BEEP Plus Grant, Tamu Entrepreneur Financing Scheme, Rural Tamu Premises Project, Sejati Madani Cooperative Programme and the Tunas Usahawan Belia (TUBE) programme have also benefitted entrepreneurs and cooperatives in the district,' he said. Ewon added that Penampang must formulate a comprehensive development plan to be included in the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) for the 2026–2030 period. 'The Penampang Development Master Plan launched last year was a key reference document for the Federal Government, State Government and relevant ministries in planning the implementation of RMK-13,' he said. He also expressed appreciation to all parties contributing to Penampang's development and hoped the Kaamatan Festival celebration will continue to be a platform for unity. 'Unity, cooperation and solidarity are vital to ensuring a progressive future for Penampang,' he said. Meanwhile, Sletcher Myranda Floyd was crowned Unduk Ngadau Penampang 2025 after emerging victorious among 14 contestants at the event. Her win earns her a place in the grand finale of the state-level Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan competition, scheduled for 30 May. Sletcher also took home the Tati Topiodo title, awarded for best personality and presentation, along with RM7,000 in cash, a trophy and a bouquet. The first runner-up was Carrie Terence, who received RM3,000, while Dorna Mayra Michael came in third place and who also secured the title Tati Tosuau, for grace and elegance and received RM2,000. Both runners-up also received trophies and bouquets. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? More Tamu Desa to be built in Sabah, Sarawak this year

Published on: Wednesday, June 04, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 04, 2025 Text Size: Ewon said 14 tamu desa were built in the Kota Belud area, part of the 98 premises completed across Sabah and Sarawak last year. Kota Kinabalu: The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (Kuskop) will construct more 'tamu desa' (rural traditional markets) in Sabah and Sarawak this year, to enhance rural market facilities and empower entrepreneurs in both states. Its Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the Madani Government, through Kuskop, had allocated RM20 million to implement the Tamu Desa Development Project this year. He added that this included an additional RM10 million announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Madani Rakyat Programme in Tawau last month. 'Last year, we successfully built and upgraded 98 tamu desa across Sabah and Sarawak. This year, with an allocation of RM20 million, I hope the same number or more can be built,' he said in a statement. He was speaking after officiating the Kampung Pinasang Tamu Darat Kaamatan Festival in Kota Belud and subsequently launching the village's tamu desa, which was completed this year at a cost of RM250,000. Ewon said 14 tamu desa were built in the Kota Belud area, part of the 98 premises completed across Sabah and Sarawak last year. 'I have been informed by the village leaders that these premises greatly benefit the residents, especially mothers and small entrepreneurs who conduct business weekly. They not only provide a more comfortable space for selling but can also be used for various community activities on other days,' he said. According to him, the requirements for tamu desa development vary depending on the location and scope of work determined by the District Office, whether for new construction or upgrading, involving costs ranging from RM100,000 to RM300,000. As of May this year, he said, applications for new construction or upgrading of tamu desa premises in Sabah had reached RM40 million, including applications carried over from last year that could not be implemented, and this amount did not yet include applications from Sarawak 'Although our budget is limited, what is important is the continuity of what was implemented last year. What we started last year will be continued and expanded this year. I am confident that this programme will be among the key inputs of the ministry in the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030),' he said. The tamu desa initiative was also part of the government's commitment to pay special attention to the needs of rural Sabah and Sarawak, in line with the nation's inclusive development agenda, he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kaamatan festival boosts business for Sabah seamstress

Norhayati Ajirul has to extend her business hours during Kaamatan to cater to demand for her traditional clothing. (Bernama pic) KOTA KINABALU : Kaamatan, Sabah's biggest ethnic celebration held throughout this month, is a profitable season for local seamstress Norhayati Ajirul. Although her shop is modest in size, its reputation rests on the quality of her craftsmanship. Her neat stitching, precise tailoring, and intricate bead embroidery – showcased in her traditional attire from various Sabahan tribes – continue to draw customers eager for both ready-made and custom items. Norhayati, a Bajau from Kudat, said demand for traditional clothing spikes significantly during the festive season. She works alongside five employees to fulfil the flood of orders. 'Orders for traditional clothes come in all year round, but when Kaamatan arrives, they multiply. Alhamdulillah, even our ready-made clothes sell out. We have regular customers and even local wholesalers who rely on us,' the 52-year-old told Bernama. As such, Norhayati has to adjust her business hours during the festival month. 'Normally, we open from morning until evening. But during Kaamatan, we start as early as 7am and close at 9pm. 'A week or two before the height of Kaamatan, it's non-stop, with no time for breaks.' Her team can complete as many as five traditional outfits a day, each garment taking between two and five hours, depending on the complexity of the design. Prices for each outfit depend on the size and design, with children's traditional clothing selling at RM100 to RM150 apiece, and adult outfits from RM500 to over RM2,000. 'This brings me joy' Norhayati said her interest in the uniqueness of Sabah's ethnic traditional wear led her to venture into the trade. Before running her own tailoring business, she gained experience as a salesperson and seamstress at another tailor shop. Norhayati with her daughter Anisa Baqeera, who helps to draw younger customers by promoting their outfits on social media. (Bernama pic) The mother of four picked up her skills independently without attending formal sewing courses. She also drew inspiration from local newspapers that featured pageant contestants showcasing traditional attire from their respective districts. 'There are various challenges in producing traditional clothes, especially with the embroidery and beadwork. You have to know the correct placement, how to assemble each district's attire, and understand the unique patterns. 'I sew every day, but I never feel tired or bored because this work brings me joy,' she said, adding that she hopes to expand her business in the future. Meanwhile, Norhayati's youngest child, Anisa Baqeera, plays an important role in modernising the business by promoting their traditional outfits on social media. 'We want to attract more customers, especially those of the young generation. Social media is the best way to do it,' the 22-year-old said. For customer Mohd Nazllie Zainul, a journalist, businesses involved in producing traditional clothing do more than just generate income for their proprietors. 'They play a crucial role in preserving and celebrating Sabah's ethnic arts and culture, while attracting the interest of both domestic and international tourists,' he said. Food trader Farradiah Awang Bahari, 44, shared that she purchased ethnic attire from the boutique for her son, who is celebrating Kaamatan at his school. 'I believe it's important to expose children to our culture from an early age, so they can experience and appreciate its beauty,' she said.
