Instead of promised 'acche din', days of debt have arrived: Congress's dig at Modi Government
Taking a swipe at the Centre, the Congress on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) claimed that the economic condition of the common people in India is 'very worrying' and that instead of the 'acche din' promised by the Modi government, days of debt have arrived.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh cited a media report which claimed that despite the increase in the income of the people in the country and inflation being under control, household savings have decreased for the third consecutive year.
'People's savings in the country are decreasing, debt is increasing! This clearly means that on one hand inflation is increasing, on the other hand people's income is decreasing. As a result, people are either withdrawing their savings or are forced to survive by taking loans,' Mr. Ramesh said in a post in Hindi on X.
'The bottom line is that the economic condition of the common people in India is very worrying, but the Modi Government is completely careless!' he alleged.
'It is clear that instead of the 'achche din' promised by the Modi government, the days of debt have arrived,' Mr. Ramesh said, taking a swipe at the government.
The Congress has been attacking the government over its handling of the economy, claiming the issues of rising prices, decreasing private investment and stagnating wages were hitting the common people hard.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney at the outreach session of the G7 leaders' summit in the resort of Kananaskis on Tuesday as New Delhi and Ottawa sought to reset bilateral ties after a prolonged diplomatic spat. Modi's meeting with Carney at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge was the last on the Indian prime minister's schedule in Calgary before a departure to Croatia. One potential meeting that did not take place was with US President Donald Trump, who skipped the last day of the summit and returned to Washington on Monday night due developments in the conflict between Israel and Iran that have overshadowed the G7 gathering. 'Will be meeting various leaders at the Summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South,' the prime minister said on X after his arrival in Calgary on Monday evening He received a ceremonial welcome at the airport and was received by, among others, India's Acting High Commissioner to Ottawa, Chinmoy Naik. This was Modi's sixth consecutive participation at the G7 summit since the summit in 2019 held at Biarritz in France. The invitation to the Indian prime minister was seen as a reflection of India's growing economic heft and the perception among G7 member states that New Delhi must be part of efforts to find solutions to economic and security issues. India-Canada ties rapidly deteriorated after then Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau alleged in September 2023 that Indian government agents were involved in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India dismissed the charges as 'absurd' and accused the Trudeau government of giving space to extremist and radical elements. Over the past two years, the two sides expelled each other's diplomats and downgraded diplomatic ties. However, since late last year, the top leadership of both countries have resumed contact since Carney won the general election. Earlier, the G7 leaders signed a joint statement calling for de-escalation of fighting between Israel and Iran while reaffirming that Iran cannot be allowed to have a nuclear bomb. The statement reads: 'We, the leaders of the G7, reiterate our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. In this context, we affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel.' Trump left the meeting in Canada early to deal with the Israel-Iran conflict, but played down the chances of a ceasefire. On Tuesday morning, he returned to Washington and criticized French President Emmanuel Macron for saying the move was possibly a sign he was working on a truce.

Delhi University rolls out UG admissions
NEW DELHI Delhi University (DU) on Tuesday launched its Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal for undergraduate admissions for the upcoming academic session. In the first phase, students can register on the portal using their CUET application number and personal details. Once CUET-UG results are announced, the second phase will begin, allowing students to select their preferred college and course combinations. DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh said, 'Applicants can start the registration process now. Once CUET results are out, they can move on to selecting their preferred courses and colleges.' Mr. Singh announced the launch of two new postgraduate courses this academic year: MA in Hindi Journalism and MA in Tourism Management. He advised applicants to use a laptop or desktop for the process, as the full features of the CSAS portal may not be visible on mobile devices. Dean of Admissions Haneet Gandhi shared that the university would offer 79 undergraduate programmes across 69 colleges, with a total of 71,624 seats available. To assist students, the Admissions Branch has set up nine telephone helplines, e-mail support, and a chatbot facility. During the first phase, applicants must submit their basic details. The application fee is ₹250 for candidates from the Unreserved, OBC–Non-Creamy Layer, and EWS categories, and ₹100 for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe candidates and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities. In the second phase, students will log into their dashboard to map their subjects, selecting those studied in Class 12 or their closest equivalents. Based on this, they will be shown eligible programmes, after which they can rank their course and college preferences. Final allocations will be made on student preferences, CUET scores, and seat availability.

INDIA bloc intact; SP-Congress to contest U.P. polls together, says Akhilesh
Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav said on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) that the INDIA bloc is intact and asserted that the Congress and the SP will contest the 2027 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh together as part of the opposition grouping. 'We are not worried about any such statement. INDIA bloc is intact and we are firmly with it. Those who are unhappy can walk alliance will contest the elections together,' said Mr. Yadav, while replying to a media query on a recent statement by Congress Lok Sabha MP Imran Masood regarding a reset in seat sharing between the SP and the Congress for the 2027 polls. For the last two weeks, Mr. Masood, the Saharanpur MP and a leading Muslim face of the Congress, has been stressing that the seat-sharing formula used in the 2024 Lok Sabha election will not work in 2027. Both the Congress and SP are part of the opposition INDIA alliance, which was created before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls to electorally challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The SP and Congress contested the parliamentary polls together in U.P. registering limited success with the SP winning 37 seats while the Congress emerged victorious in six seats, it's best performance in U.P. since 2009. Mr. Yadav's statement is significant because on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) he was meeting representatives of the Pasmanda Muslim community at the SP state headquarters, in Lucknow. He promised a slew of measures, if elected in 2027. 'Many decisions related to the livelihood and employment of weavers were taken by the Samajwadi Government. As soon as the BJP Government came, all the schemes for their welfare were ruined. I assure you that after the formation of the Samajwadi Government, along with solving all the problems of weavers, attention will also be paid to their training, quality of production, new technology, and fashion trends,' he said.
