BBC fans fume over 'unfinished' plot as Scots black comedy axed after two series
It has been revealed that Annika will not be making a return to screens for a third series. The BBC announced that the show, starring Nicola Walker, had been axed after two series.
Nicola, 55, has been dealt the huge blow as the detective drama will no longer run on U+Alibi and BBC. Fans have been left less than impressed at the "disappointing" news as they slammed bosses' decision.
The series was first based on the BBC Radio 4 audio drama Annika Strandhed, with Nicola voicing the principal character. The programme was renowned for its distinctive style, with the detective regularly breaking the fourth wall to speak directly to viewers.
A representative informed the RadioTimes: "We are incredibly proud of the success of Annika on U+Alibi, but there are no current plans for a third series."
Annika's axe comes despite its impressive Rotten Tomatoes rating, with an 83 per cent score and a 96 per cent audience rating.
The drama saw Annika leading the fictional Glasgow-based Marine Homicide Unit, with the cast consisting of Katie Leung as DC Blair Ferguson, Jamie Sives as DS Michael McAndrews, Ukweli Roach as DS Tyrone Clarke and Kate Dickie as DCI Diane Oban.
The star-studded line-up also included Doctor Who star Varada Sethu joining as DC Harper Weston in season two, while Paul McGann played Annika's love interest Jake Strathearn, and Silvie Furneaux was her daughter, Morgan.
Following the news, fans took to social media to vent their frustrations. One person wrote on Twitter: "So disappointed that #BBC aren't bringing #Annika back for S3. So many unfinished plot lines. Really enjoyed S1&2."
Another added: "Shame current series of #Annika on @BBCOne is the last. Such a great series...," as a third simply remarked: "Gutted they have cancelled Annika."
"WHAT?!! Love this show! Why must @BBC axe popular progs? Why stop after a cliffhanger at the end of the previous series?," fumed another.
Viewers also took to discussion platform Reddit, equally as 'gutted' over the news expressing how angry they were. One person wrote: "Gutted about this, loved the show. P****d off as well, don't end things on a cliffhanger then cancel it, insult to the audience!"
Someone else added: "Damn, that's so annoying; I enjoyed both series immensely. At least give us the trifecta to close things out properly!"
"All it needed was one more series to be complete I reckon, what a joke," wrote another. "One of the better things from the BBC in years and now they axe it with what exactly to fill it's place? Nothing... is most likely the answer."
Someone else quipped: "Well that sucks, really was enjoying it and wanted to know what was going to happen in the next series. Why do they do this? Surely this was getting enough viewing figures to continue it. Either way it totally sucks a**."
However, not everyone was surprised, as some people didn't have great reviews. One person said: "Surprised they green lit series 2," as someone else wrote: "Probably the only show with Nicola Walker that was a dull fest. Just didn't happen."
Another added: "It worked well on the radio series but didn't always translate to screen. I really recommend the R4 series, also with Nicola Walker."
"I love her work. But when I watched the first episode and she turned to the camera and spoke, I was like: this doesn't feel right. I never went back," expressed someone else.
One other quipped: "Love Nicola Walker but this did her no favours," as someone else echoed: "Agreed. Love her and will watch anything she's in. But this was by far my least favorite."

'And I can't believe that I let you convince me that we could raise this baby. I don't know whether you really mean it or whether you just saw a weakness in me.' Darkest soap storylines Over the years the likes of EastEnders, Emmerdale and Coronation Street have all tried to try outdo each other with their outlandish plots in a bid to keep us tuning in each week. But here are some of the darkest that had fans in shock... EastEnders: Tony grooming Whitney (2008-2009) - Tony King first appeared in Albert Square in 2008 as the boyfriend of Bianca, played by Patsy Palmer. But it was quickly revealed he was a paedophile who had been grooming vulnerable Whitney, Bianca's adopted stepdaughter from a previous relationship, since she was 12. The shocking storyline attracted more than 200 complaints within a week of it beginning. Whitney waited until her 16th birthday to reveal the truth to a horrified Bianca, who called the police. Emmerdale: Holly's drug addiction and shock death (2010-2016) - In 2010, Holly Barton (played by Sophie Powles) became Emmerdale's first teenage drug addict. The shocking storyline saw her taking cocaine on a night out before developing a deadly heroin habit. Parents John and Moira desperately tried to help get their daughter clean but when Holly returned in 2016, following a four-year absence, she quickly relapsed. Fans were left stunned and heartbroken when distraught Moira found Holly dead in her bed from a heroin overdose. Hollyoaks: Luke's rape (2000) - Actor Gary Lucy was just 17 when he took on this groundbreaking storyline, which saw his character Luke Morgan become soap's first male rape victim. Luke had endured a long-running bullying campaign by football rival Mark Gibbs - who raped him after Luke stood up to him. Luke was left suicidal following the brutal attack, before opening up to his brother Adam. Gibbs was sentenced to eight years in prison. Gary won the Best Actor gong at the British Soap Awards in 2000 for his performance. Coronation Street: Evil Richard Hillman (2001-2003) - Just a mere mention of 'Richard Hillman' is enough to send a shiver down the spines of soap fans. He is often ranked one of the most evil soap villains and it's not hard to see why. The smooth-talking financial adviser bashed his ex-wife Patricia over the head with a shovel. In a bid to keep his mother-in-law Audrey quiet, he set fire to her house. And when Maxine caught him trying to murder Emily Bishop, he took a crowbar to her head. He made his exit from the cobbles in 2003 when he drove Gail Platt, played by Helen Worth, and her family into the canal. They survived, but he didn't. Breaking down Eve asked: 'Why would you open me up to that hurt?' Suki said a simple 'I'm sorry' that stopped Eve in her tracks. But it wasn't enough and Eve left telling her: 'I don't know what we've got left.' Eve walked out the door, but has she left Walford for good? Or will she be back?

Emmerdale fans 'fume to Ofcom' in shock over 'disgraceful' storyline
Emmerdale viewers were so shocked by violent Emmerdale scenes that they felt the need to reach out to broadcasting regulator Ofcom after a fan favourite was beaten up An Emmerdale fan has 'fired off a complaint' to Ofcom after seeing disturbing scenes. Viewers tuned into ITV's Yorkshire-based soap as usual on Tuesday night and one of them was so impassioned by a certain moment in the half-hour instalment that they felt the need to get in touch with the broadcast regulator. It all happened when Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson), confused about his sexuality, met Mike (Macaulay Cooper) on a dating website. Vinny, already tortured after developing feelings for his friend Kammy Hadiq (Shebz Miah) whilst being engaged to Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham), invited the man over after he thought they had connected over sharing a problem in common, and it comes as a confrontation saw Mike accuse Vinny of inviting him over just to sleep with him. But as it turned out, Mike was only after money and savagely beat Vinny before walking off with his and Gabby's wedding rings. READ MORE: Is Vinny leaving Emmerdale? Future for Bradley Johnson revealed after heartbreaking storyline As Vinny lay on the floor, he realised that he had disclosed a whole host of sensitive information to this man about his inner turmoil. But fans were so shocked by the violence portrayed, and one was so 'disgusted' that they decide to take action, writing on X afterwards: "I've fired off a complaint to Ofcom- disgusted with how what used to be a family show has morphed into something that seems to be trying to to show as much violence and depravity as it can squeeze into each programme. 7.30 is far too early to show this sort of muck." The angry viewer was not the only one to take umbrage with the upsetting scenes, as another wrote: "This storyline is disgusting, Vinny reaches out to a support group and gets a homophobe and blackmailer, what sort of message is that sending to anyone questioning their own sexuality and wanting to seek out help." Another said: "This storyline is disgusting, Vinny reaches out to a support group and gets a homophobe and blackmailer, what sort of message is that sending to anyone questioning their own sexuality and wanting to seek out help." A further fan slammed the entire storyline as they suggested that the bosses of the soap enlist a Hollywood director to helm all the action that takes place in the fictional Yorkshire village. They said: "Appalling, disgusting storyline. Why don't you just get Tarrantino or Guy Ritchie to Direct. Vinny was a lovely character." One viewer also agreed the scenes were 'shocking', and one suggested: "The 9pm watershed is just a gimmick. Before then, nothing with strong language is allowed to be broadcast. But seriously violent and disturbing scenes such as this are perfectly fine. I can only assume that violence is socially more acceptable than swearing. Disgraceful." But other social media users were quick to play down all the controversy, and reminded them that that tuning in was a completely free choice to begin with. They said: "You know that if people don't like what they're watching, then turn your tv over, miss the episode, these things happen in real life, pity it was Vinny getting pulverised, it should have been John, just saying. Great camaraderie with Manpreet and Ruby." One said: "I knew there was something fishy about that bloke when Vinny first met him. But I wish # emmerdale hadn't got as dark as this. I much prefer the old." Another added: "Felt sorry for poor Vinny in Emmerdale I knew that lad was dodgy! No need for such violence, really laying into him! This happened before and not just with his dad!"
