It's an interesting choice, given that Shaq and Howard have had a public feud that goes back more than 17 years. It was an inevitable tension as Shaq was not willing to cede his spot among the best centers in the game to another player, especially one Shaq saw as appropriating his 'Superman' image.

This feud continued after Shaq's playing days, with him once suggesting Brook Lopez was a better center than Howard (who had been named First Team All-NBA for five straight years at that point). Howard said Shaq was retired and needed to let it go. Shaq later said all this was a motivational tactic to fire up Howard, but it continued even a year ago when both were out of the game (Howard was inspired by the Mike Tyson/Jake Paul 'fight').

Ron Howard's 'Eden' opens with a bold statement: 'Fascism is spreading.' It'll surely carry weight in modern society, but the phrase is referencing events from nearly a century ago. Based on a true story, 'Eden' retraces what happened when a group of Europeans attempted to start anew on the remote island of Floreana, only to encounter the earthly failings they hoped to escape: chaos, blackmail, betrayal and even murder. Howard assembles an impressive cast, though it isn't always enough to make up for the overambitious plot of a film that drags in the middle. 1920s Germany, haunted after accepting blame for World War I, was on the brink of demise, as mass poverty and broad social unrest laid ground for the extremism that birthed the Nazi party. 'Eden' shows us none of that, instead dropping us on a small island of the Galápagos, where Dr. Friedrich Ritter ( Jude Law ) and his loyal partner, Dore Strauch Ritter ( Vanessa Kirby ) found solace after fleeing their native country. The idealist doctor is inspired by a newfound purpose of penning radical philosophy that will 'save humanity from itself.' Yet the historical resonance, which could have provided pointed commentary on the parallels between today and the 1920s, falls flat amid the film's overlong runtime, unlikable characters and shaky accents that most actors stumble in and out of. In the midst of the film's crafted chaos, the story inevitably loses focus. Still, 'Eden' made room for some memorable performances. More adventurists eventually arrive on the island, and just like that, human interaction starts to breed madness. The doctor's philosophical work has spread through letters and newspapers across Europe, attracting settlers like Heinz Wittmer, a veteran of the Great War played by Daniel Brühl, and his much younger second wife Margaret, played by Sydney Sweeney. The Ritters' quiet isolation is disrupted by the couple, who arrive with Wittmer's young son, chasing the promise of an island utopia to ease their deep disillusionment with everyday reality. The tension between the two groups further exacerbates when Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn ( Ana de Armas ), who calls herself the Baroness, arrives with her two lovers, determined to build a resort on the island. What results is a cat-and-mouse game between the three groups, ripe with betrayal, distrust and tension. The battle for resources exposes just how much of their morality these people are willing to give up for survival, at least attempting to — but never fully succeeding — in addressing the question: When do people bend to human instinct? The film lacks depth in exploring questions of morality and human nature while depicting Ritter's lofty goals to save humanity. His philosophy spirals into madness throughout the film, reduced to brief, sometimes painful and surface level sound bites that eventually devolve into incoherent ramblings. The movie is at its most compelling when its three female actors are on the screen. Different motivations bring them to the island, each of which ultimately centers on the same blind faith in the idea of the masculine leader. They all end up vastly disappointed. Dore is consumed by an unwavering devotion for Ritter, a man who never lives up to the image she's crafted in her mind. Margaret, having married an older man expecting guidance, is instead forced to build her family's future from the ground up, only to fight tooth and nail to preserve it after her husband nearly destroys them. And the Baroness, who confidently declares herself 'the embodiment of perfection,' oozing with seduction, ultimately crumbles at the rejection of a man. Arguably, Sweeney — who is almost unrecognizable as the timid and brunette Margaret — steals the show. She easily delivers the most impactful scene of the movie, as she was forced to give birth to a baby boy alone in the middle of the desolate island. It's not hard to guess who won't makes it off the island, either by choice or by force. It is a true story after all. The bloody ending feels unavoidable from the beginning, almost as predictable as human nature itself. But maybe that was the point all along. 'Eden,' a Vertical release in theaters Friday, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for 'some strong violence, sexual content, graphic nudity and language.' Running time: 129 minutes. Two and half stars out of four.

Caitlin Clark misses another practice as Fever call her prospect of return 'status quo'
Two-time All-Star guard Caitlin Clark missed another practice with her injured right groin Wednesday, and coach Stephanie White still does not have a timetable for her star's return. Clark has not played since hurting her groin in the final minute of a game July 15 at Connecticut. Three different muscle injuries this season have forced Clark to sit out 22 games including the last 13 — and All-Star weekend in Indianapolis. The worst part: White is simply hoping Clark returns for some of her team's last nine regular-season games. Indiana also lost three other key players with season-ending injuries over the last two weeks. "Until she can get into practice and until you guys see her in practice, it's really status quo,' White said after Wednesday's workout at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Clark never missed a game in college and played in every Fever game last season when she won the WNBA's Rookie of the Year Award. Indiana spent the offseason going all-in on putting a stronger supporting cast around the former Iowa star and those moves appear to have paid off by keeping the Fever in playoff position without Clark and the rest. But Clark still has a role with the Fever. 'Caitlin's still there, like that hasn't wavered,' All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell said. 'And I think even though they're not in the lineup, we still feel everyone's presence.' ___

Senior Bowl 300 watch list features 10 Oklahoma Sooners
The organizing body for the Senior Bowl announced the first pool of 300 players who qualify for inclusion for this year's game at the end of the season, and 10 Oklahoma Sooners were included on the list. The Sooners were headlined by quarterback John Mateer, who qualifies despite being a junior, because he previously redshirted and qualifies as being eligible for the NFL draft. Mateer is set for his first season in Norman after leading the FBS in total touchdowns last year at Washington State, throwing for 29 and running for another 15 scores. Mateer also made the initial watch lists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, and several other postseason awards. Joining Mateer as a Senior Bowl honoree on the offensive side of the ball were wide receiver Deion Burks and running back Jaydn Ott. Ott is also entering his first year with OU after transferring from California-Berkeley, where he was a first-team All-Pac 12 running back two seasons ago before injuries stifled his production in 2024. Burks transferred from Purdue ahead of the 2024 season and was on the verge of a breakout last year, catching 31 passes in just five games before injuries took their toll, as well. Defensively, seven Sooners made the list. Four of those seven play on Oklahoma's defensive line. That group is led by defensive end R Mason Thomas. Thomas was named preseason All-SEC second-team by the league's media over the summer and All-SEC second-team by the league's coaches earlier this week. The Senior Bowl also honored Marvin Jones Jr., Gracen Halton, and Damonic Williams. Among the second level defenders, safety Robert Spears-Jennings and cheetah's Kendal Daniels and Kendel Dolby made the 300. Spears-Jennings is Oklahoma's leading returning tackler after registering 66 stops last year. Dolby was a starter two seasons ago and had 49 tackles, including five for loss, and two interceptions. Last year, Dolby was limited to just five games after suffering a dislocated ankle. This is the first year the Senior Bowl has released its top 300. In years past, initial lists included 850 players. Kip Lewis is the most notable player missing from the list. The weakside linebacker is in going into his fourth season with the Sooners and has been an impact player over the last two years. He has a year of eligibility after this year, so he could return to Oklahoma for 2026. There's still time for players to play their way into consideration for inclusion into the Senior Bowl. Heading into 2025, the Sooners have a significant group of upperclassmen leading the way in what they hope will be a huge bounce-back season.
