Why Drake's Claim That UK Rappers Are Superior Lyricists Should Be Taken With A Grain Of Salt

Yahoo8 hours ago
Drake stirred the transatlantic rap pot with a declaration that's already causing waves this past weekend, as the Canadian claimed that U.K. rappers are the best in the world, including his American rivals.
On Saturday night (July 12), during the second night of his headlining performance at the Wireless Festival, the 38-year-old made the bold assertion while bringing out British rap legend Skepta to grace the stage.
'No disrespect to America, but nobody in the world can out‑rap London rappers,' Drake said, eliciting a raucous response from the crowd, as well as chagrin and dismissal from Hip-Hop fans in the U.S. and beyond.
This statement, delivered to a roaring U.K. crowd, follows closely on the heels of Skepta's latest single, 'Friendly Fire,' on Friday (July 11), in which the grime legend takes shots at the likes of A$AP Rocky and Joyner Lucas.
The record arrived days after Skepta issued a challenge for the top American rappers to go against the best from the U.K.
'I wanna clash an American rapper anyway, finally get this US/UK rap debate sorted,' the rapper said in response to doubts regarding U.K. rappers' lyrical ability in comparison to their stateside counterparts.
Drake's public alignment with the U.K. camp, especially after his well-documented tensions with A$AP Rocky — the same rapper Skepta has openly challenged to a battle — seems deliberate. Many fans deemed Drake's take as sour grapes from rivalries with Kendrick Lamar and others.
However, the move is further underscored by Drake's ever-strengthening ties to the British rap scene. His Wireless sets included appearances from U.K. heavyweights like Skepta, Dave, and Central Cee, with whom Drake has cultivated a brotherly rapport in recent years.
Despite featuring a star-studded international lineup that included Lauryn Hill, Sexyy Red, 21 Savage, Yeat, Latto, Bryson Tiller, Giveon, and even Vanessa Carlton, it was the London energy that Drake seemed most inspired by. His statement wasn't just a casual compliment — it was a direct endorsement of a scene he's openly championed in recent years.
Whether a genuine belief or a strategic alliance, Drake's claim places him firmly in the heart of a cultural tug-of-war. And with Skepta ready to settle the score in the booth, the U.S./U.K. rap rivalry might just be heading toward its most lyrical chapter yet.

Become a Master of Evil With Darth Vader's Actual Lightsaber (if You Have $3 Million)

io9 has covered a few notable Star Wars auctions lately, as rare toys and highly collectible props have come to market in surprisingly robust amounts. But maybe the most exciting example has just emerged: Darth Vader's lightsaber. The actual, authentic, screen-matched hilt used by David Prowse and his stunt double in both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. As your mind reels at the possibility of owning such a prize, consider that it's estimated to command $1 million at the lowest estimate and $3 million at the highest… and maybe more. Propstore's press release touting the sale notes that back in 2022, it sold a screen-matched miniature of a Star Wars X-wing fighter for over $2.3 million, but 'Vader's lightsaber has the potential to surpass that figure.' If any Star Wars prop is going to rake in that much dough, it's gotta be this one. The press release stresses that this is the very weapon deployed in Darth Vader's climactic battles with Luke Skywalker, used on-set by Prowse and stunt performer Bob Anderson. Here are additional details on the piece: 'It is constructed from a vintage British press camera flash handle that was transformed into Vader's infamous weapon through the fitting of dressing components such as plastic grips, calculator bubbles, and cosmetic wiring. This specific prop was further modified with a custom blade-mounting system that facilitated the installation of a wooden rod; the rod served as the blade during the choreographed fight scenes and made the physical, on-camera dueling possible. It also later served as a guide for visual effects artists to add the hand-animated glow for the final shots.' What's more, 'this is believed to be the only hero lightsaber prop from the original Star Wars trilogy with verifiable screen use ever to be offered at public auction and is widely considered one of the most sought-after items in Star Wars collecting.' Propstore's Entertainment Memorabilia Auction takes place this September in Los Angeles, after several of the biggest items—including Indiana Jones' bullwhip and belt from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Sauron's helmet from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring—complete a press tour to London, Beverly Hills, and New York. You can find out how to bid here. Want more io9 news? Rihanna reveals her sons 'both love music'

Rihanna's sons "love music". The 37-year-old star has Riot, 23 months, and RZA, three, with rapper A$AP Rocky, and Rihanna admits that her sons have already developed a passion for music. The chart-topping singer told E! News: "Both of them love music. Like it's insane because I'm like, 'Is that me or is that you, Rocky?' They love instruments. They love music." Rihanna suggested that Rocky is the biggest musical influence on at least one of her sons, revealing that Riot has already developed a love of freestyling. The Work hitmaker - who is currently pregnant with her third child - shared: "That's definitely a Rocky thing, not me." Rihanna has relished the challenge of raising her sons, but she recently confessed that she's "always wanted" a baby girl. The singer has remained tight-lipped about the sex of her unborn child, although she admitted that she'd love to have a little girl one day. Asked about the sex of her unborn baby, Rihanna told Extra: "You have to wait and see. Oh, my gosh, are you guys going to be so hurt if it's a boy?' Extra's Terri Seymour then replied: "I think we're secretly hoping you have a girl … because you've got your two sweet, sweet boys." Rihanna subsequently admitted that she'd love to have a baby girl. She explained: "I've always wanted a girl. God knows best, right? And I love my boys." Rihanna also confirmed that her unborn baby's name will begin with the letter R, describing it as a family "tradition". She said: "I mean, of course. It's tradition at this point." Rihanna has enjoyed huge success with make-up and lingerie brands, having put her music career on the back-burner in recent years. However, the singer confessed in 2024 that motherhood has changed her entire approach to fashion and style. Speaking to Interview magazine, she explained: "It's more like I spend my time getting the kids dressed to death, and then I'm like, 'What's the most comfortable outfit to wear around them? What's not going to feel uncomfortable on their face or on their body or make me feel like I can't hold them properly?' Moms are lazy dressers in real life."
