DHA grants initial approval to Yas Healthcare to set up UAE's first proton therapy centre in Dubai
DUBAI (WAM) The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has accorded initial approval to Yas Healthcare, a subsidiary of Das Holding, to establish the UAE's first proton therapy centre in Dubai, marking a historic milestone in the advancement of cancer care in the region. The state-of-the-art facility is expected to be completed by late 2028, with construction slated to start in early 2026.It will be the first dedicated centre in the UAE to offer proton therapy, a highly advanced and precise form of radiation therapy that targets tumours with exceptional accuracy while sparing healthy tissue. The treatment is especially effective for paediatric cancers and tumours located near sensitive organs.Director-General, Dubai Health Authority, Dr. Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, stated, 'Under the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, we are committed to positioning Dubai as a global leader in healthcare. This proton therapy centre will enhance patient care, offering world-class, patient-centred treatment and improving access to specialised care that ensures better outcomes.''This groundbreaking technology will advance cancer treatment options for our community and reinforce Dubai's goal of ranking among the top 10 cities globally for healthy life expectancy. It also strengthens Dubai's position as a key destination for advanced medical care and innovation, in line with the National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031, Dubai Social Agenda 33, and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33.'Proton therapy is a highly precise and advanced radiation treatment that delivers targeted doses to cancerous tumours while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. This minimises side effects and is particularly effective for treating paediatric cancers and complex or sensitive tumour sites. The Yas Proton Therapy Centre will provide patients across the region with access to this specialised treatment for the first time, eliminating the need to travel abroad for care.The project will be developed in strategic collaboration with the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), one of Asia's leading authorities in oncology. NCCS will serve as the project consultant, bringing global clinical and technical expertise to the design and implementation of the facility.Medical Director and General Manager of Yas Healthcare, Dr. Mohamad Zaki, said, 'Global data indicates a rising number of cancer diagnoses, particularly among younger patients. Proton therapy provides a treatment option with fewer side effects and lower toxicity for certain cancer types. The Yas Proton Therapy Centre aims to improve accessibility and reduce costs by offering this treatment closer to home.'Chair of the Division of Radiation Oncology at the National Cancer Centre Singapore, Dr. Michael Wang, added, 'This milestone collaboration with Yas Healthcare reflects the National Cancer Centre Singapore's leadership in radiation oncology, operating one of the largest proton beam facilities in Southeast Asia. We are excited to contribute our expertise as Yas Healthcare introduces this advanced technology to redefine cancer treatment in the GCC.'The move to develop the new facility directly aligns with the National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031, the Dubai Social Agenda 33, and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 — key initiatives to enhance quality of life, improve health outcomes, and position Dubai as a premier destination for medical innovation and tourism. Dubai's Medical Tourism Vision also aims to attract more than 500,000 international patients annually by 2025.Construction work related to the project is scheduled to begin in early 2026 and the facility is expected to be operational by the end of 2028.

Organised by the Sharjah Social Services Department, the forum concluded with a set of strategic recommendations to increase the application of smart technologies in elderly care. The most notable recommendations included building effective partnerships with the private sector to launch specialised technical and training programmes targeting this group, and involving the elderly in decision-making by forming advisory committees that represent their voice and express their actual needs. A panel discussion on AI for the elderly under way. Other recommendations also covered expanding the use of assistive tools in providing healthcare services and daily follow-up. They proposed developing integrated digital platforms linking healthcare and social service providers. This would facilitate safer and easier access to medical and psychological support, as well as remote consultations. Smart platforms facilitating access to services As a continuation of this approach, the Emirate of Sharjah has developed several digital platforms that make services more accessible and support the independence of the senior citizens within a fully integrated smart environment. Within this framework, the Sharjah Social Services Department launched the 'Virtual Social Adviser' platform, a smart tool supported by artificial intelligence that allows the elderly to communicate with social and healthcare service providers from their homes, via interactive audio and video channels. In addition, the 'Virtual Companion' service was launched, relying on smart screens inside the homes of the elderly, enabling them to have daily communication with nursing, psychological, and social support teams to reduce isolation and enhance mental health. Innovative and supportive smart tools Alongside interactive platforms, a set of innovative smart tools have been employed to support the daily lifestyles of the elderly and achieve the highest levels of safety and comfort at home. The 'Limb' application was also presented, an interactive digital rehabilitation exercise tool that allows specialists to design digital treatment programmes and monitor performance remotely, improving the effectiveness of home care and reducing the need for travel. Comprehensive field services Other than digital solutions, Sharjah places great importance on field services that reach the homes of senior citizens, within a mobile and integrated care system. These digital initiatives have been integrated with different field services such as mobile medical clinics, which visit the homes of the elderly to provide periodic examinations and diagnostic services, alongside home nursing that provides healthcare and delivers medicines for chronic cases. The 'Mishwar' service contributes to transporting the elderly and people with disabilities to health centres, while the 'Ijaba' service, since its launch in 2022, has enabled the completion of official transactions for home care centre beneficiaries, such as renewing official documents without the need to leave home. Active ageing and community participation The Emirate's efforts are not limited to healthcare alone but extend to aspects of social and cultural interaction, within an integrated vision to promote the concept of active ageing and community participation. Sharjah's social policies work to enhance this concept by engaging the elderly in cultural, social, and sports activities. These are supported by artificial intelligence technologies specifically designed to suit their abilities. The Emirate also provides digital training programmes to improve their technical skills, empowering them and increasing their interaction with electronic services. Towards a smart and safe environment for the elderly These initiatives create a sustainable system that embodies Sharjah's commitment to building a smart and safe environment that preserves the dignity of senior citizens and ensures them a high quality of life at every stage. Dubai Police Arrest Three Women for Illegal Cosmetic Procedures
Dubai Police have detained three women accused of illegally practicing medicine and performing cosmetic treatments without a licence inside a residential apartment. Officials said these activities violated UAE laws and posed serious risks to public health. UAE and Jordan lead 59th aid airdrop into Gaza
The UAE and Jordan carried out the 59th airdrop operation of humanitarian aid into Gaza on Friday, alongside seven aircraft from France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The efforts were part of Operation Chivalrous Knight 3, which aims to deliver food and relief supplies to the most affected areas in the strip. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke by phone with Ayman Safadi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The two sides discussed the latest developments of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, and ways to enhance joint co-ordination in relief efforts. UAE aid to Gaza The UAE has provided more than $1.5 billion in humanitarian support to Gaza since the start of the war with Israel, authorities revealed on Friday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs set out the scale of the country's commitment to the enclave and pledged to continue to deliver support amid 'continuing catastrophic conditions'. According to the UN's financial tracking Service, the Emirates has delivered more aid to Gaza than any other country. The assistance includes providing medical support to 72,280 patients at hospitals in the UAE and the floating hospital in Al Arish, Egypt. In addition, over 78,000 tonnes od food, medicine, and emergency supplies have been distributed in co-ordination with international humanitarian organisations. At least 60,249 Palestinians have been killed and 147,089 wounded since the war with Israel began in October 2023, according to the Hamas-run Gazan health ministry.
