Make the most of the school holidays at Melville Koppies. For working parents, the mid-year school holidays can be a stressful time. Many do not have leave or the means to go away.
Melville Koppies offers the perfect local escape. Bring your family on a Sunday morning between 08:00 and 11:30.
Enjoy a refreshing hike in the wide-open spaces. Race your young ones up the hill, join in a treasure hunt, and take in the breathtaking views of Joburg from the top of the Koppies.
There will be storytelling on July 13 from 09:00 to 09:30, suitable for all ages, as well as a range of self-guided trails from 500m to 5km.
These take you through grassland, forest and along the spruit. By the end of your visit, it will feel like you have taken a proper break.
You can also book a guided tour on 079 532 0083 to learn about the Koppies' three billion-year-old rocks, the history of its earliest inhabitants, and more.
Safe parking is available opposite the entrance at Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Road, Emmarentia. Entry is R100 for adults, R50 for under-18s, and free for under-fives. Season tickets cost R500 for adults and R250 for under-18s.

The delegation spent five days assessing Durban's marine infrastructure and port facilities as part of its bid to host the first-ever African edition of the event in November 2026. "YARE is a globally recognised annual business conference for the superyacht industry, bringing together shipyards, service providers, and over 100 superyacht captains, alongside more than 300 top-tier global companies". According to the eThekwini Municipality, the hosting of the event is currently under consideration by the Council. Earlier this week, the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government also signed an agreement with Navigo aimed at unlocking the province's estimated R100 billion ocean economy. This is according to the provincial government which said KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli had signed a landmark agreement with Italian marine industry leader Navigo International. The province has described this as a new era for KZN's ocean economy. It said the partnership marks a bold step in unlocking the province's R100 billion maritime potential, leveraging its 820 km coastline, world-class ports, and emerging marine manufacturing sector.
