Last Updated: July 06, 2025, 08:28 IST
Chinmay defends Ranbir Kapoor's casting in Ramayana.
Singer Chinmayi Sripaada has come forward to defend Ranbir Kapoor amid growing online backlash over his casting as Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari's upcoming film Ramayana. The criticism erupted after the film's first glimpse, featuring Ranbir and Yash, was released recently. Soon after, a section of social media users began targeting Ranbir by resurfacing an old interview where he mentioned consuming beef. The trolls started questioning his suitability to portray a revered mythological figure. Responding to the outrage, Chinmayi called out the selective morality of such attacks and urged people to focus on real issues rather than personal choices from the past.
Chinmayi slammed the hypocrisy and wrote without naming anyone, 'A babaji who uses the name of God can be a rapist and he can keep getting parole to get votes in bhakt India – however what someone eats is a big problem."

When a user questioned her stance by asking, 'How one bad thing can justify another bad thing?", Chinmayi hit back sharply. She responded, 'Nice. So someone playing a ROLE is the same 'bad' as a rapist campaigning for votes amongst you. You deserve to have Ram Rahim as your local MP and visit your house personally."
A wave of backlash had earlier erupted online after a section of social media users resurfaced an old interview in which Ranbir Kapoor admitted to consuming beef. This was in response to the recent reveal of his role as Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana. One post on X (formerly Twitter) read, 'Beef eater will be playing the role of Bhagvan Ram now! 🤦 What's wrong with Bollywood?"—accompanied by images of Ranbir and Sai Pallavi from the film's set.
Despite the online backlash, Ramayana, helmed by Nitesh Tiwari, remains one of the most highly anticipated Indian films. On July 3, India witnessed a groundbreaking rollout in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Kochi, simultaneously unveiled the first look of Ramayana: The Introduction.
Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Raavan, Ramayana is planned as a two-part film. The first part is set to release in theatres on Diwali 2026, followed by the second part on Diwali 2027. As per reports, the first instalment will end with the Sita Haran episode, though this hasn't been officially confirmed yet.
Along with Ranbir, Sai, and Yash, Ramayana also features an impressive star cast. Sunny Deol will be seen as Hanuman, Ravi Dubey plays Laxman, Lara Dutta takes on the role of Kaikeyi, Rakul Preet Singh will be seen as Surpanakha, and Kajal Aggarwal plays Mandodari. Thammudu received mixed reviews with critics lauding the performances but panning the execution. The Times of India stated that it was 'weighed down by overblown melodrama'. 'Thammudu had all the ingredients for a stirring emotional-action drama, but in trying too hard to be everything, it ends up being less than the sum of its parts. A film that had the potential to hit the bullseye sadly misses the mark,' read a portion of the review. The lacklustre word-of-mouth is one of the reasons Thammudu failed to soar on the all important first weekend. It remains to be seen whether the film is able to redeem itself today (July 7), the first Monday.
