Northeast Ohio officers joining hundreds across the country for Police Unity Tour
CLEVELAND (WJW) – 'We ride for those who died,' is their motto and inspiration.
It's called the Police Unity Tour and brings hundreds of officers together from across the country to honor those who have died in the line of duty.
Rain or shine, they bicycle from New Jersey to Washington, D.C. and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, raising money to support the memorial.
'Sadly it's the only memorial in Washington, D.C. that grows,' said Cleveland Police Sgt. Tom Ross. 'In 100 years, they'll still be adding names to that memorial and it's not lost on us at all.'

The annual and emotional event takes place in May during National Police Week but is front and center right now for those participating.
Team Ohio is comprised of 18 members from Bluffton Police Department, Brooklyn Heights Police Department, Cleveland Division of Police, Euclid Police Department, Macedonia Police Department, Toledo Police Department and Xavier University Police Department. Additionally, three Richfield officers will be riding with a different team.
A fundraiser to support Team Ohio is being held Saturday, March 22 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Mary Queen of Peace Parish Center, 4427 Pearl Road in Cleveland.
'All money raised goes to the National Law Enforcement Memorial,' he said.
Ross will be riding with Team Ohio for the second time.
He and detective Jim Skernivitz had discussed taking part in the fundraiser, but tragically, the 53-year-old was killed while undercover on Sept. 3, 2020.
So last year, Ross rode with Jim's picture on his bike.
'So it's quite a journey for us,' he said.

Around 24,000 names are currently on the national memorial, including many from Ohio.
This year will be especially emotional for Northeast Ohio officers after 23-year-old Euclid Officer Jacob Derbin was ambushed in May and 27-year-old Cleveland Officer Jamieson Ritter was killed in July serving an arrest warrant.
'Especially our local officers who were so young and had an entire life ahead of them at the same time we have Macedonia officers who are riding for officers killed decades ago,' said Ross.
The entire effort, he said, makes sure everyone in law enforcement and their loved ones know that their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Pink flamingo statue thief wanted — again — in Parma
PARMA, Ohio (WJW) — Police in Parma said they will hold whoever is responsible for stealing a pink flamingo statue responsible, once they catch them. Officials said, police and the detective bureau will work together to find the person or people involved, charge them accordingly, and bring them in front of a judge. Nationwide recall of Zicam® and Orajel™ products Police report that sometime before noon on Friday, June 7, the large flamingo statue at the corner of Broadview and Snow Roads was stolen. The City of Parma Street Sign Supervisor, Brain Deyling, reported the theft. The statue is valued at approximately $2,500. It just went up in April. Parma native, Dennis Vasko, donated $2,000 for the statue's creation in dedication to his 4-year-old granddaughter Ava, who is autistic. 7 teens shot after drag racing incident: I-Team The theft comes just about a year after Parma's other flamingo statue was stolen from the Parma script sign. Three men were caught on surveillance video trying to stuff the original flamingo into a trunk before ditching it. Those men were sentenced to 10 days in jail for attempted vandalism, as well as each ordered to pay a $500 fine and complete 500 community service hours. They replaced that statue on the same day they added the statue that was just stolen from the Quarry. $80K beauty heist: Video shows serial shoplifter in Mayfield Heights
MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) — Mayfield Heights police have released footage of a suspect accused of stealing more than $80,000 worth of makeup and other beauty products. Caught on camera, a suspect with sticky fingers is accused of stealing $2,200 worth of makeup from Ulta Beauty on Som Center Road on May 15. Macedonia police arrest 6 women in Kohl's thefts But that's just a fraction of what she's accused of taking. On May 15, a woman walked into the Ulta Beauty store in Mayfield Heights. She appeared to be wearing a disguise, attempting to blend in with other shoppers. But a police report filed on May 23 told a different story. Remains found in search for missing teen last seen at airport The store's general manager said the woman managed to steal more than $2,200 worth of cosmetic products. The manager told police she discovered the theft while sorting paperwork and realized her employees had not reported the incident. The suspect was identified in the report as Paula Andrea Lopez-Correa, a Virginia woman wanted in multiple states. She is accused of stealing from Ulta Beauty locations across multiple states, racking up a total of more than $81,000 in losses, according to the police report. According to the store's loss prevention team, Lopez-Correa has used a black Kia Soul in some of the thefts. The car has a Virginia license plate number TFK5214. Nationwide recall on jerky and snack sticks Police said they searched city cameras for that plate number but found no matches. As of now, Lopez-Correa remains at large.
