LGBTQ Representation In Movies Hits 3-Year Low, GLAAD Finds
After reaching a record high in 2022, LGBTQ representation continues to decline in movies.
On Wednesday, GLAAD released the 13th edition of its Studio Responsibility Index (SRI), which found that LGBTQ-inclusive films dropped to 23.6% of releases from 10 top studio distributors during the 2024 calendar year, down from 27.3% in 2023 and 28.5% in 2022.

The SRI also found that, only two films (less than 1%) featured transgender characters; 37% of LGBTQ characters had less than one minute of screen time; only 27% had more than 10 minutes of screen time, down from 38% last year; LGBTQ characters of color made up the lowest percentage since 2019 at 36%; and there were no LGBTQ characters living with HIV in any of the 250 films tracker.
'This year's findings are a wake-up call to the industry. At a time when LGBTQ people are facing unprecedented attacks in politics and news media, film must be a space for visibility and truth,' said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD president and CEO. 'Representation isn't about checking a box — it's about whose stories get told, whose lives are valued, and creating worlds that mirror our own society today. When done authentically, LGBTQ representation builds audience and buzz, while humanizing LGBTQ people as those in power are actively working to take away our humanity.'
Meanwhile, gender parity was reached among LGBTQ characters for the first time in five years, at 50% women, 48% men and 2% nonbinary; and A24 was the only studio to receive a 'Good' rating with the highest percentage of LGBTQ films.
Looking at releases from A24, Amazon, Apple TV+, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, Sony Pictures Entertainment, The Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros. Discovery, as well as their subsidiaries and streaming services, films were judged based on the basic standard for meaningful LGBTQ inclusion, as outlined by GLAAD's Vito Russo Test, named after a co-founder of the organization.
The 2024 titles that passed the Vito Russo Test include Love Lies Bleeding (A24), Problemista (A24), My Old Ass (Amazon), Drive-Away Dolls (NBCUniversal), Mean Girls (Paramount Pictures), Fancy Dance (Apple TV+), Good Grief (Netflix), Rez Ball (Netflix), Sweethearts (Warner Bros. Discovery), Housekeeping for Beginners (NBCUniversal), The Radleys (Lionsgate), Ricky Stanicky (Amazon), Between the Temples (Sony Pictures Entertainment) and Prom Dates (The Walt Disney Company).
Following the Trump administration's attacks on DEI and recent attempt to cancel Pride Month, several LGBTQ films are finding their ways to the screen this year.

Gallery on Gazebo opens 'Shoe Your Pride' exhibition
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – This stylish collection is celebrating Pride Month in artistic fashion. The 'Shoe Your Pride' exhibition opened Saturday at Gallery on Gazebo, 140 Gazebo Park, downtown Johnstown, and it showcases artist-designed shoes that are symbols of self-expression, identity and inclusion. 'This is an opportunity for artists to celebrate Pride by decorating, personalizing or embellishing a pair of shoes to exhibit and share with the community,' said Laura Huchel, exhibit coordinator. On display are 13 pieces of customized footwear ranging from high heels to boots to children's shoes to roller skates. 'There's a bit of a play on words with 'shoe' and 'show,' so it's about showing your Pride with your pair of shoes,' Huchel said. 'There's definitely a lot of sculpture, and there are some things that I would be delighted to wear myself. 'There's a lot of messaging and beauty to this.' Exhibiting artist Janean Wheeler's 'Cute as a Button' is dedicated to transgender youths. The children's shoes are adorned with varying styles of buttons with the words 'Happy Kiddo' written on them. 'I think that trans is sometimes overlooked in Pride and I think they are at risk for harm, so I wanted to focus on them,' she said. Wheeler said the show can serve as way to bring the community together. 'It can be preaching to the choir a little bit, so I think the challenge is more about how do we bring other people into the conversation; and maybe art can do that,' she said. 'The shoes is a fun part because it's not so in-your-face. I think it adds a little bit of interest and wonder.' The exhibition will be open during the Johnstown Pride event June 21 in Central Park, and there will be handouts for children to color shoes. 'I want people to feel inspired and hopeful and just delighted by the efforts of people, and really recognized and seen,' Huchel said. 'This truly is a celebration of Pride. I hope this makes people feel welcome at the gallery and we can celebrate everyone's identity.' The exhibition will run through June 28. Many of the pieces in the show are available for purchase. Williams pointed out in her tribute that she 'hadn't even caught' the interpolation when she first saw Doechii's performance. The singer went on to praise Doechii's self-assured artistry, and even added that she still aspires to that level of confidence more than 20 years into her career as a performer. 'People sometimes assume because of how I am onstage, that I carry that same confidence. But the truth is, that kind of boldness is something I still have to work to access,' she said. 'With Doechii, though, that energy feels inherent. When I listen to her, I feel it — like it transfers through the speakers. And I think a lot of her listeners feel the same way.' ‘Rose Hill' Romance Series Is Becoming a Show—And Fans Can't Wait
Elsie Silver's popular Rose Hill series will make its debut on screen, Variety revealed Thursday. Amazon MGM Studios is set to develop the show and bring the best-selling author along for the ride! There isn't information on the cast and release date yet, but Silver shared the news on Instagram with her 312,000 followers writing, 'In a true 'pinch me' moment I am beyond thrilled to share that my Rose Hill series is in development for television! I am honored to be working with an incredible team at @amazonmgmstudios and @templehillent. I know that these characters are in the best hands and cannot wait to see this very special town come to life.' Silver will be the executive producer of the show, along with Temple Hill's Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen, and James Seidman. Annika Patton of Temple Hill will produce the show, according to Variety. The Rose Hill show's official logline is: 'Welcome to Rose Hill, a small town nestled in the Rocky Mountains, where crystal-clear lakes, iconic honky-tonks, and wide-open skies create the perfect backdrop for creativity, reinvention—and falling in love. The success of Amazon's 'Daisy Jones & the Six,' 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' and 'Reacher' are good omens for 'Rose Hill's' upcoming release. The Rose Hill book series is set in the picturesque, small town of Rose Hill, nestled in the Rocky Mountains. Each stand-alone novel follows different characters as they navigate the struggles, successes, and steamy love stories that Rose Hill brings. Currently, there are three books in the Rose Hill series–Wild Love (2024), Wild Eyes (2024) and Wild Side (2025)–but a fourth book, Wild Card, is expected to be released in September 2025, according to Goodreads.
